The lack of pressure and sacks shouldn’t be a surprise. They haven’t gotten consistent pressure all season and it was highlighted by David Pollack that this team hasn’t pressured the QB. They don’t get a push up the middle and the offense can keep the pocket intact. When the Dawgs’ defense was at its best (‘21 and ‘22) , the interior Dlinemen reset the LOS and forced the QB to move. Simpson was comfortable all night and rarely forced to move his feet. Scheming pressure against good teams is tricky and risky and leaves your secondary exposed, see long TD passes by Tennessee and Alabama.
Think it through. According to PFF we have the second most talented roster in the country. Do we play like that? NO! Why?
Kirby does have a problem with Alabama; he tries to out Alabama, Alabama. Obviously, KS got this style from Alabama and it works against everyone else, but 1-7 tells us it doesn’t work against Alabama. To borrow a boxing analogy, UGA can’t stand in the middle of the ring and slug it out with Alabama. They can bully everybody else, but they can’t bully the bully. Teams that are successful against Alabama force them to defend the entire field, usually with a QB that can run and create explosive plays with his legs. Saban came to this realization when Johnny Manzel went into Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama. Saban went away from the game manager Qb to dual threat and didn’t look back.
@JBMDawg46….247 2025 Talent Composite has Dawgs ranked #1….
We may have the most talented inexperienced roster in the country, but what we don't have is the talent AND the experience. That makes a HUGE difference now. This game just proved that point.
But, having said that, Bama is #2 in the 247 2025 Talent Composite. What happened yesterday was several key things:
Like I said below, Bama was only up by 10 points at the half, didn't manage to score another point in the 2nd half, and we STILL managed to lose. That's simply incredible.
The "WHY" also comes down to coaching. We got outcoached majorly yesterday on both sides of the ball. That's on Kirby and his staff. The lack of execution is on the players and somewhat on the staff for not getting them ready for this game when we had a BYE week.
Frazier fumbled inside Georgia’s own 20 yard line, not the red zone.
Yes, Yes this right here !! Exactly !! To beat Bama Kirby is going to HAVE to step outside of his “normal” thinking and think outside the Bama box he was raised with !! Look at what OC Grubb did running that 330 pound monster down near the goal line !! He almost scored and if my memory serves didn’t he pick up 1st down ? Whether he did or not he picked up valuable yards.
NO I’m not talking about “ gimmick “ plays that are only practiced one or two times the whole year. I’m talking about Emergency Plays a handful of them that have been practiced enough that the Team is comfortable with them and can be used when the game is on the line . I mean how many people really thought OC Grub would run that big monster ? I sure didn’t !! We have become to predictable Really on both sides of the ball !!
@87Dawg_11 I will say that Bobo is not using Gunner correctly. He could do SO much more if Set Free !!
I realize this is a bit off topic, but it was costly nonetheless and needs to be discussed. One thing that drives me crazy with any coaching philosophy is the inconsistency between being aggressive with some decisions and then being timid with others. The whole 4th and 1 debacle was made worse when CKS decided to punt with just over 3 minutes left. To use some CKS terminology, 9 times out of 10, I'm happy when the opposing team punts from mid field with that amount of time, especially when my team's 3rd down conversion rate has been great! How many thought we may have given up the last chance to win with that punt? Yeah it was 4th and 9, but Gunner has proven clutch in that situation, even in the same drive with the long 3rd down conversion to Branch. It almost seemed like a concession when the Dawgs punted then.
Well, first off keep in mind that the world isn't ending and Georgia's season is far from over.
That being said, I don't think the problem is the ENDING of the game, but instead the beginning. We had the week off. As expected, we looked rusty and unprepared. We started with the ball and instead of having a fully prepared offensive start, we literally went 3-and-out for 2 yards. Next offensive series had 2 missed passes, a 5 yard penalty, a total of 4 plays and then a punt. By the end of the First Quarter, Bama had a 14 pt lead with an 80% chance of winning. Meanwhile, our defense got worn out with endless 3rd downs and plays.
This really isn't acceptable. I don't know what Smart has the team do in the off week but whatever it is, LITERALLY do the opposite. If it's strength training then just have them sleep. If you let them rest, then make them practice. You can't start with the ball first and be down 14-0 at halftime and expect to come back. That's not how to win games. Be prepared, know your opponent and get them off guard. That's what the off week is supposed to be for. We had plays on defense where the team had no clue what they were doing and were looking around confused.
In terms of the ending, well, remember that even if we had gone for a FG, Bama had a missed chip shot FG that should've been made and they were clearly driving the ball and already at midfield with plenty of time and timeouts and certainly could've gotten at least a FG out of it.
Skimmed thru the dialog. Can't say I disagree with very many. My question: The recruiting class(es) the last bunch of years has been top 5 every year (if not better). It's not panning out.
Spotting teams 14+ at the half, (not including the cake games) and we got burned on this game. Maybe some folks need to go ?
"we’ve got more packages than the man on the moon" - that's the problem, Kirby. You have too many for such a young defense and young OL. Simplify - especially on defense. I'm not saying go vanilla. You've got inexperienced players and you are making them think too much.
