Georgia coaching stock down, but Chauncey Bowens and Zachiarah Branch flex star power

ATHENS â Kirby Smart built back-to-back College Football Playoff championship teams by not allowing a 26-23 loss to Alabama at the conclusion of the 2017 season âbeat him twice.â

Our coaching staff's abilities have degraded. There's no doubt about it. Things are stale. Creative juices are lacking, and most of the teams we play know our MO by now. We need some good new blood after this season.
It's a very young team. The right side of our line played for Langston Hughes last fall. As with most young teams, they've done some unbelievably great things, and at times, some really bad things. Going to be bumpy this year. But as the writer points out, we have some super talented skill players.
The loss is on the coaches and the great ones will say this loss is on me . Kirby never admits that for whatever reason . He just continuously says we need to execute better .
I agree that the coaching staff isn't nearly as good as during the championship seasons, but I'm not sure creativity is the ingredient that is causing the most problems. Simple execution seems to me to be a huge issue. Dropped TD pass, Ball security, bad angles at the line of scrimmage, no pass rush at all — these fundamentals seem to be more problematic than lack of creativity. In fact, i would argue that choosing the least creative play (kicking the field goal instead of the 4th and Cash Jones play) would have changed the course of the game for the better.
I can’t blame all on coaching because of a few player miscues but that is expected for young men playing. What is not to be expected is the seeming lack of a game plan that reflected accounting for Bamas strengths. Bama looked smooth, particularly on offense, while the DAWGS appeared lost for much of the game. O line looked much better but Stockton continues to miss open receivers, and these open receivers are usually the TE coming across the middle. Stockton seems hesitant to throw across the middle and by not doing so, this offense always seems to need great plays to maintain drives. I would love to see a drive where routine plays are the mainstay and it isn’t always 3rd and long or 4th down heroics.
Biggest concern is just how raggedy the offense looked compared to Bama. They had a very solid game plan and executed it nicely while Georgia looked stuck in the same old formula. The talent level deserves better coaching and that needs to change quickly.
you will be barred from further conversations for bringing logic and reason to a fan board. There’s no place for that here, eighteen year olds must be berated and coaches fired.
"the staff declined the opportunity to tie the game with a 25-yard field goal attempt."……
Could not AGREE more……how is it that our on coaching staff have missed the now well entrenched aphorism….born from experience….."Never go against The Dawgs in over time"!!!!!!
MB has been a great coach but he's stale and unchangeable…..opposition cann read him like a large print book written on a third grade level…..I'm still prayin for BUSTER.
@GtheGreek...why in the heck did Kirby run that 4th down controversial play to Cash Jones that Bama blew up to the right side of an inexperienced, underperforming high school line?? That's a poor coaching decision.
It makes no sense. I questioned the call to begin with, but I completely disagree with running it to our weak side of the O-line. Baffling.
I can name several teams including Bama and Oklahoma who have new OCs, and those teams have come out pretty strong in their offense. If Mateer hadn't gotten hurt at Oklahoma, those guys would still be on a tear.
Execution is part of the problem for sure, but that comes down to coaching as well.
In KJ 's defense, the ball was thrown in the opposite direction he was leaning, and he tried to reachout and one hand it or deflect it to himslf (if Im remembering correctly). He couldn't reel it in, but the inference in the article is that it hit him square in the chest and he just dropped it.
Very true, it could have been an interception, but it would've had to be a spectacular catch by Bolden. Ball was behind him, and as you stated..he was caught leaning the wrong way and couldn't come up with it. He made a helluva try though..
@MontanaDawg..I believe if Mateer doesn't get hurt, Oklahoma would've been a top 3 team at seasons end. And Mateer would still be sitting alone atop the Heisman favorites list. Venable is doing a great job at Oklahoma, not only as the HC, but as the DC as well. Plus his OC choice was a homerun ball also.
Griff evidently makes these stock prices by what he sees in the game or on players’ grades after the game instead of rewatching the game. That’s my guess. If he did rewatch Bolden’s pass knockdown, he wouldn’t have said what he said and no, it wouldn’t have been a pick six.
True. The dogs got to better on defense
Former OC Todd Todd Monken could better develop Gunner..period. KY will look to exploit the same vulnerabilities Bama exposed…. Def. secondary, et al. Lack of any pass rush. Georgia needs to better execute even basic playbook schemes. Lots of younger players learning by playing. I have been a harsh critic of UGA football this season..actually a naysayer. Gonna revise that and give UGA a break this season of growth. Just bringing the team to the plateau of smoothly executing the basic plays…fumbles and drops excluded. Bama looked smooth and efficient…confident . This will vastly improve Gunner as a college-level QB.
The coaching base pay is so high that the performance bonuses aren't effective any more. Most of these coaches never in their lifetimes expected to make the kind of money they are making. Now they are just trying to avoid rocking the boat for fear they will lose their cush job. Flip their bonus money to their base pay and vice versa and watch them work!
