Georgiaâs slow-start trend, early-season loss put coaches, CFP hopes under fire

It has already started with bloody film review of the 24-21 loss to Alabama and has continued with prep for a classic âGet Rightâ game at noon on Saturday against Kentucky.
Comments
UGA is not the only team out there with play off hopes under fire.
”under fire”???
Oh hayul - “It’s the end of the world as we know it”.
Dang, where do they get these guys from.
" Georgia has trailed in its past eight games against Power 4 competition, and the opponent has scored the first touchdown in 6 of those 8 contests. "
Good grief.
It's not just the slow starts that concern me. It is the lack of offensive firepower, explosiveness, and big play ability. Bama came at us in the 1st half with ALL OF THAT I just mentioned. Plus Grubbs was very creative in his play calling. And then in the 2nd half, we were only able to score 7 points!
We can't just play "keep away" against the better teams. I don't know what the answer is, but we had this SAME issue last season, so it's not a new problem. It's a problem that has gotten worse. That should concern every fan out there.
@dazzledawg That is a fact, but Georgia isn't used to it … SEC parity in full force
@Eastmandawg Not the end of the world — a new world — Georgia doesn't have the same talent disparity as it once enjoyed. No one in the SEC does. Big Ten, ACC …. different story.
@MikeGriffith…SO true Mike. The days of a deep, talented, elite bench are mostly gone. The days of younger, inexperienced rosters are here to stay. More player turnover, more parity, more headaches for coaches, but hopefully better matchups for fans.
So, will coaching be the deciding factor since there is more parity? And/Or, will Kirby and other teams who do not use the portal as much as say, Lane Kiffin, have to start getting even more of their experienced talent there? It's a delicate balance and juggling act. We know heavy use of the portal doesn't make a Championship team (Ole Miss, Texas Tech), but the RIGHT use of the portal - like the Buckeyes did last season - works well.
AHH??
BTW - you gonna take Finebaum’s place when/if he runs for senate? Thinks you would be a popular fellow, those folks would love you.
So, you're saying that UGA, with Top 3 recruiting results for many years, now doesn't have adequate talent? If you meant coaches, OK. Players? I don't buy it
TexASS is STILL overrated. I also don't fully understand TX Tech being ranked ahead of UGA. I haven't done much to follow their season, but… I have a really hard time they would outplay UGA in any phase. I'm willing to listen, though, if anyone has any insight. I'm admittedly ignorant on that one.
Idunno, man. Looking at the Alabama game alone: considering how many plays we actually got off, the number of explosives was pretty significant. There's definitely a solid potential for regular big plays, the young men just have to get more consistent. I'm not writing off this season, but I am VERY hopeful for what next season is going to look like, provided we maintain most of our talent during portal season…
Much of what is said here clarifies one of my biggest problems witn NIL. In those long-ago days before non-professional athletes played for money, they played for recognition and to be part of programs that they understood would develop them as players, programs that would come the closest to guaranteeing them the opportunity to move to THE league. Now, if a kid can make a name (and a significant amount of money) for himself, it does not seem to matter so much if he is going to be playing for a team that competes for championships or get him ready for the next level. There's almost something backward going on. That is, when enough kids get literally bought by the same school, all of a sudden, they ARE contending for championships, just not because of anything they've worked toward together, and the likelihood that any of them would actually be DEVELOPED by the program that is paying them in their last year of availability is slim to none. Should kids get paid when their faces and stats are used to develop video games and the likt? Sure. My line for what is reasonable doesn't fall too far past that, though…
@osmosiphobe…I understand what you are saying…but obviously we didn't have enough offensive firepower to win or score more than 7 points in 2H. I counted 2 explosive plays. Colbie had a pretty big catch and Bell had a 43 yard run. If Taylor had caught that gift horse then we would have had that 7 points we didn't get and another explosive play. Other than that, out of 53 offensive plays, we didn't have any others that were what I would consider "big or explosive".
Texas Tech bought their roster from the portal…reports say they spent $28M just on the portal players (not counting the revenue sharing, etc). They don't deny it. Yet, they haven't played anyone ranked. They beat up on the Utes this weekend. In addition, they've beat Pine Bluff-AR, Kent State, and Oregon State. The Red Raiders (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) have the third-largest point differential (208-45) in the country and are off to their best start since the 2013 team won its first seven and was ranked No. 10. They are picked to finish high in the Big 12, but they don't play any currently ranked teams during the regular season except BYU and Arizona State late in the season. If they luck into the playoffs they won't last long.
@Kudzu…I think what Mike is trying to say is with the portal & NIL there are more teams acquiring better than average to elite players on their rosters which is shrinking the talent gap between many teams now (especially in the SEC). Those players generally have more game experience as well, which, like I keep saying, can and does beat inexperienced or less experienced better talent much of the time.
Sure, we've got the most talented roster in the country…on paper…but it's a very young, mostly inexperienced roster. Some of those rookies will end up being studs on Day 1, and some of those 4 and 5 stars will languish, make lots of mistakes, and not live up to their billing. Heck, just look at Arch Manning and all the hype. He's fallen flat thus far.
NIL or pay to play is here to stay and teams that manage their rosters the best will benefit the most. I’ll ague that recruiting is just as important as ever and that identifying and developing talent (2 and 3 star) is more important. I hear a lot about parity, but I believe this will be more of the haves and have nots instead of true parity. This will cause coaches to build rosters differently.
I agree @Montanadawg on your points there. I think where @87dawg_11 is going was where I was headed.
I think UGA still has a huge gap, across all levels of experience, vs the vast majority of FBS teams, even as a handful of other (mostly outside the SEC, except Texas) programs have gotten a pile of cash. We certainly should have had enough $s and talent to whoop up on our foes beyond Tennessee... but we didn't.
Look at all these fantastic, high-caliber transfers and 2nd and 3rd years. I'm still of the belief that our past success wasn't JUST awesome rosters, it was the Lanning's, Monken's, Faulkner's, McGee's, Pittman's, Muschamp's, etc. that I think we have yet to level back up to... I'm not anti our current staff (except maybe OL), but I just think the coaching staff has started to "group think" a conservative, rigid way of thinking that all of them need to break out of... with CKS leading the charge.
On a related note to these posts, I have to say I just dig on our DN posters and virtual "community" (UF trolls aside 😂)... I now spend more time reading the comments than I do the articles and have learned so much more about the sport and team we all love from all of you, even those I occasionally disagree with.
Looking forward to pulling together for our growing/leveling-up Dawgs the rest of the season!
