“Put what you want. I get to watch our guys every day in practice,” Smart said on Saturday. “I mean, I watched our team have 60, 70-something third downs in four games before today, and I have a lot of confidence in our defensive unit team, pass rush coverage, third down plan. I mean, I feel good about it. I don’t feel good about the stats.

I hate Auburn with the heat of a thousand suns. And their current coach is the most insufferable film-flam man since Tuberville.

This Bulldog team hasn’t given me a lot of reasons to believe. We lost a lot of talent to the draft and transfers, and our assistant coaches — particularly on the OL — just aren’t at the same level as Lanning, Monken and Pittman.

But I gotta have faith that our Dawgs will rip the Tiger Eagles (whatever that is) to shreds.

Hogwash. As I mentioned before, Ohio State had the #1 defense last year with far less talent than UGA has right now. Before you say "easy Big 10 schedule), Ole Miss and Texas were 2 and 3, Notre Dame was 5, Tennessee was 7.

The difference: Ohio State runs a 4-3 defense. Because of this, their DLs don't have to play both gaps. That allows their 325 lb and 310 lb. DTs to focus on stopping the run and their 260-265 lb DEs to just pin their ears back because they only have to play single gap. They only play 2 LBs because it is long past time that defenses stop pretending that teams are going to line up with FB and blocking TE and run counter treys and sweeps. Not even Nebraska or Auburn does that anymore. Everyone starts 3 WRs plus a "TE" that is actually a possession WR who lines up inside and just calls the same 4 or 5 running plays between the tackles. Ole Miss? Basically the same. Whether you regard their "Buck" position as a DE or OLB they are running either a 3-3-5 or a 4-2-5. Air Force created that scheme/philosophy because it was so hard to 300+ pound linemen in the service academies so they just replaced them with linebackers. Everyone else adopted it because nearly every college football program now runs the spread instead of a true pro style or west coast offense.

UGA will still be able to rush the passer and have a dominant defense with their current scheme if it is years like 2023 and 2024 with future NFL talent all over the place. Short of that, a 3-4 defense designed to defend the offenses that NFL teams were running in the 2000s, think Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, isn't going to be elite in this era without a guy who is going to get drafted in the first 3 NFL rounds at all 11 positions.

We need to figure out different ways to rush the passer, or it will be a long day. We need to spy the QB, and the DBs must play man, or we will get killed.

Auburn is ranked #8 in the country for sacks. They have 16 so far this year. Considering the top teams they have played, this is pretty impressive. Dawgs O-line has got to be up for the task of helping out Gunner.

Dawgs ranked #108 in sacks…with 7…tied with Bama and KY.

Say what you want about whether or not sacks matter…I totally believe it does when it comes to a disruptive, suffocating defense…which is what we used to have.

I am more concerned about how the UGA (2nd and 3rd team?) OT's are going to block projected 1st rd NFL pick DE Keldrick Faulk than how UGA will get pass rush bringing unspecified 4th and 5th rushers from the LB or DB position.

@CandlerPark Hugh Freeze is being mentioned as a hot seat candidate in jeopardy of losing his job this season if AU doesn't make significant improvement the rest of the year. Hopefully he loses this week but hangs on to his job. Like Napier, Freeze remaining employed at AU means that UGA has a coaching and recruiting advantage going forward.

Watching the Miami game Saturday night their front 4 are all thouoghbreds ready to sack the oppasoing QB. I couldn't get over how fast their 2 DE's looked, compred to ours.

THey have a really good team and a pretty good QB, but what I've noticed is CB doesn't have to put the game all on his shoulders now. He looks like he's having fun again.

@mitch_earl….Ohio State's defense is even better this season…and they are in the top of the pack for sacks (ranked #22 with 14 sacks). Former Ohio State DC Knowles moved on to Penn State this year, and things haven't worked out so far for the Nittany Lions and their defense this season…

I couldn't help but notice that the Miami receivers had no problem catching CB's passes. Funny that.

UGA needs to rush/pressure the passer Saturday if you want to stay in this game. Kirby!!!
