Why Kirby Smart actually wasn’t too happy with Gunner Stockton’s late touchdown run

The below post was in reference to KHummel post about taking the “chewing” to the locker room.

Lmao...all, true. If you're playing and have less than a split second to decide....always take the points.

The QB taking a knee, should have been discussed prior to that set of downs. And...it may have been...which may be why Kirby looked a little peaved.

Afterall....don't they have speakers in their helmets now?. May have just been a miscommunication.

    Smh...Jordan-Hare! I hate that place.

What do you think he was inferring when he said…and I quote "So they’ll be sending people to investigate that one because that’s a three to seven. It’s a three to 10 score…"

The betting line started at Aub+3.5, you figure it out. Pretty obvious to me. Why else would there need to be an investigation?

With all the tweaks and changes they have made to the onside kick rules it is pretty much impossible to blow a +10 lead with under 2 minutes. I'd take a 2 score 2 minute lead versus a one score and the ball lead any day. To lose a 2 score game you have to scru up twice, food for thought

CFB onside kick rules are the same as they've ever been in the 4th Q. GS scored with 1:53 left in the game. That is enough time for 2 scores with a successful onside kick. If GS goes down in bounds after the 1st down but before the TD UGA can run out the clock.

OK I’m gonna declare a draw. If you agree fine. If you don’t agree still fine. If Gunner shouldn’t have score a TD with under 2 minutes vs Auburn. Then Kirby shouldn’t have tried to toss the ball to Cash on 4th and 1 with 13 minutes and some odd seconds left vs Bama. He should have kicked the FG. In my humble view there was plenty of time to get the ball back and score thus winning the game.

Later Kirby said he’d do the Same thing a thousand times out of a thousand times !! But that totally contradicts what he’s said Numerous times in the past and that is When points can be had you Take Them !!

As I said and I’ll Repeat I love Kirby, I’m deeply thankful for All he’s done for the Dawgs, the school, and the state. He’s Still in my view the best HC in all CFB. But he’s a human being and thus like me, like Yall, like anyone other than God he’s prone to make an occasional mistake. So when HE does, don’t chew the Player out, own it and say it was All on Me. P.S. His assistant coaches shouldn’t be above being chewed on the sideline Publicly either. Satan oops Saban would in a heart beat and he’s Kirby’s mentor. Just sayin…..

Negative…CFB onside kick rules saw several modifications including only 5 players allowed on each side of the kicker and lead players cannot block (shield) the receiving team players out of the way ahead of the ball going 10 yards among a few of the tweaks that have led to a drastic reduction in the percentage of successful onside kick recoveries from the kicking team, fact.

Hilarious hearing Kirby busting on Gunner for scoring. Heck the game was still on the line. Hey Kirby, maybe if you ran that same play against bama the dawgs would be 6-0 instead of 5-1 (plus or minus a FG)

Hard to get a clear, quick understanding of the chronology of the rule changes from the internet but based on a quick search the kickoff rules mentioned changed in '06, '11, and '18. So the rules have changed just not recently. Seems like we haven't seen everybody crowding to 1 side for a while.

On side kicks are definitely low % . Would be interesting to see the % success before the rule change vs the % success after the rule change. Probably both still very low % success.

The point was there was a higher % of scoring and getting an on side kick w/ 1:53 left vs GS staying in bounds and out of the end zone and UGA running out the clock in victory formation. That's why CKS got in GS's ear as soon as he hit the sideline.

Had the game ended 13-10 UGA fans would've never heard the end of the AU fans saying "we would've won but the ref's took away 1 of our TD's!" Winning by 10 quiets that narrative.

Just for info. purposes this change was made in 2024 though I can’t see where it’d have much impact. With 1:53 left on the clock scoring Twice though certainly not impossible would be highly improbable. It Has happened but it’s a rarity to score Twice in that short of time in CFB, in the NFL a little less rarity. But They have Far more time to practice such things.

Here’s the rule info: The most recent significant rule change for onside kicks in college football occurred in October 2024when the Big Ten conference implemented a mid-season change to have two referees on the kicking team's 35-yard line to officiate the play. This change was a specific officiating adjustment within that conference, following an onside kick incident in a game between Michigan and Minnesota.

    • Officiating change: The Big Ten's change focused on officiating by placing two referees on the kicking team's 35-yard line to better judge offsides violations during an onside kick.

NCAA approval: The Big Ten's modification was approved by the NCAA and was intended to provide more consistent judgment on the legality of the kick.

SO the NCAA implemented CFB wide what started with the Big 10 though again I don’t see where it impacts the game much just gives the Refs a better view. Seems the onside kick has been under allot of scrutiny in the last ten years or so.

I think he was "bustin' on Gunner"...cause Gunner failed to follow orders. That's my guess.

Otherwise, he would've just patted him on the back and said, "Good job!...But, get down next time...look at the clock and play the game in front of you".

Now, if I had told the team…"once you get the 1st down yardage...kneel". And, my Quarterback panicked and scored...instead of doing what was directed...it's a bad look for the rest of the team.

That's something you have to correct on the spot…in front of everybody....so, they can see, that the leaders are held to a higher standard and aren't above an ass-chewin'.

Lol…i guarantee you, Stockton will "think" about it next time. 'Course...I'm just speculating.

You've got no earthly idea what Kirby said specficaly to Gunner before the play, or what Gunner actually "heard" before the play. All we know for sure was what we saw… Kirby can and be should be better. Go Dawgs!

I don't disagree with what you wrote. Strategy could've been discussed right before the play at the 2:00 timeout. I would think it would be. Not sure many players know exactly how much time needs to be left to run out the clock w/4 downs. But that all should've been discussed w/GS at the 2 minute TO.

If I had to guess I'd say GS went into warrior mode and was going for every inch or TD he could get. How that kid is wired. Or, maybe like I said, GS had UGA and gave the pts? We'll know if he shows up this week (sans '84 pickup) in a Lamborghini.

Would love to be a lip reader on what CKS said. It would be significant if he said "Next time think about us having 4 downs and how much time is left" vs "we just talked about staying in bounds and getting the 1st down".

What he did doesn't bother me nearly as much as guys that intercept on 4th down and lose 20 yards of field position.

Just my opinion but if a player does something that’s pretty mild discuss it with him later in the locker room.

If a player does something really **** then yeah chew him on the sideline.

My point is Assistant Coaches shouldn’t be exempt from being publicly chewed for Poor preparation and/or Poor in game adjustments. Only a few players make Big NIL. These coaches on the other hand make Very good $$.

Lastly I’m all for Kirby chewing Himself when HE makes crucial mistakes. P.S. None of us know For Sure what KS might or might not have said to Gunner prior to that play. All pure speculation. I Can tell you this seeing him leap into the end zone for that TD was Very exciting for Me. And I’ve got a feeling it was pretty exciting to his teammates as well. Though certainly not impossible it’s highly improbable that Auburn could score Twice with 1:53 ticks. I can’t remember but they either had No or only One time outs left. Not much to work with to get 10 points. Just my opinions.
