Kirby Smart blunt on Georgiaâs slow starts: ' Gotta play better earlierâ

âI donât know. I wish I knew. I mean, I would tell you if I did,â Smart said. âI asked the team that question afterwards. Weâve got to get it solved because itâs hard when youâre this style of team to play catch-up. Itâs not really who we are. But weâve got to get better.â

There aren't that many options.
These three come to mind.
We could shake up the initial game plan particularly on offense. In particular, our passing game looked pretty darn good in the second half against Auburn as did our quarterback's running ability. Maybe consider utilizing these early in the game, just for a change?
In my view, it's the coaches's main job to ensure players execute. On the other hand, we have a very young, and rather banged up team, but so what?
Team leadership looks good. The team is talented. Are the coaches handicapping the team by being a smidge too conservative? Are the players curtailed a bit in their quest to play football and have fun? Would it help to pretend we're three scores down at the game's kickoff?
I don't have the answers, but, then again, I'm not being paid $10+ million to answer these questions. It may also be the case that Kirby has the answer to the question of why we're starting so slowly, but not the solution. IDK.
Go, Dawgs!
Is it the players? Or the DC just isn't prepared (at the start) and then gets caught up to what the opposing offense is doing? Slow starts are gonna bite them one of these games. See Ga v. Ala game…
Find a way to get the offensive line to handle assignments. Everything will get a lot better.
IT IS REAL EASY TO ANSWER THIS, HAVE COACH MONKEN COME BACK AS OC. PAY HIM WHATEVER IT TAKES. OR IN THE ALTERNATIVE, BOBO REVIEW ALL THE GAMES THAT MONKEN WAS OC AND USE THAT AS THE NEW PLAYBOOK.
The game plans on both sides of the ball are not aggressive. This has been a problem for more than one season . The adjustments at halftime are just that, adjustments ! Simplify the game and let these Dawgs eat !!

Injuries seem to be a constant problem for the Dawgs and the lack of depth in the NIL era is a huge part of the problem. A salary cap needs to be imposed and enforced just like in professional sports. If something isn't done to cure the "free agent" problem college sports are going to lose a lot of viewers. I stopped watching pro sports years ago and I've got one foot out the door on college sports and I ain't the only one.
The players are responsible for their performance. Coaches are responsible for having the players ready, developing a game plan, and making adjustments. I'll give any OC or DC one or two possessions to sort out his opposition. It consistently takes Bobo and Schuman an entire half and then some to get the opposition sorted. Why is that, Kirby?
There are some great points here in the comments, and I'd just like to add something that's more difficult to gauge. It seems like the Dawgs to some extent are victims of their past success. I think we can say for sure that nearly all opponents treat their game with Georgia with much anticipation. We hear anecdotes of how opponents' coaches begin preparing for this game during the off season, and how the game is "like their super bowl." As fans, it is easy to dismiss the impact of facing a team's "A" game every week, but let's face it…the Dawgs' in reality have their schedule difficulty amplified because of this. Once again, this isn't anything new, but I don't think it should be dismissed as a factor. And it is because of this, to some degree, that it often seems the opponent is better prepared early on.
Want to get off to a fast start. Got to hit the opposition with something their not looking for offensively and defensively. With their stable of backs would love to see Georgia come out in a triple option look. Bet Ole Miss hasn't seen that in practice.
I don’t see the injuries being as prominent this year as last. Just happens to be the OL taking many of them. But depth is an issue across all of D1. It’s the new reality of todays CFB
I’m not sure the OC or DC can truly understand how to adjust in a vacuum. It’s up to their respective analysts studying the opponent during the game. Remember we lost Buster Faulkner on offense. And Muschamp on D.
What would Monkin be able to do for the defense. UGA only got it's hands on the bal a couple of times in the 1st half….and, scored on one of those.
Look at all the injuries and substitutions on the interior of both sides of the line. It's no secret....you have to win the line-of-scrimmage in the SEC.
IMO...The only thing that will cure what ails em.…is experience....reps, reps and more reps. They are pretty close to being where you want to be in the 2nd half of the season.
I expect this to be Stockton's coming out game. He will either be wildly successful....or disappointingly ineffective. Personally....I believe it will be the former.
Bobo and Smart have been holding some back, for Kiffin. Cause, Kirby knows Dawggone well....Kiffin will have a little sump'n sump'n for UGA, too. He knew that after last year's game. Lol...it's payback time.
UGA 41....Ole Miss 17
Players provide feedback to the respective coaches-coordinators on the sideline. What's working and not working....unexpected stuff the other side is doing, etc..
IMO....There are a lot of eyes and brains working on the problem. But, the output, is only as good as the input. Which is why, as the season goes on, and guys get more reps and see more opposition stuff....the feedback information they provide is more informative and more reliable.
In other words....they are getting better at getting better...if that makes sense to you.
Go get em Big Red....take a bite out crime and beat hell out of those Rebs.
Exactly right. Hit em where they ain't. With Kiffin....there's no-telling where that might be. Lol
I think THIS is the most interesting match up every year. Kirby knows Kiffin's offensive tendencies....and....Kiffin knows Kirby's tendencies.
It's a toe-to-toe heavyweight marquee battle. Ali vs Frazier had nothin' on this one. Lol...only this one will be a mid to late round knockout. UGA by 24.
Let’s hope Frazier wins !! Smokin Nate !! 🤣
