Agree with Kirby. M2M lets you rush more guys. And pressure on the QB is how you slow down an opponent's passing game. Risky? Yes. But we have to get something going with the pass rush. 4 down linemen (who are good vs. run but not great pass rushers) with zone coverage is not the answer.

Agreed, Zone coverage is a bend-don't-break defense, whereas man-to-man is to get pressure on the QB and force plays to the defense's advantage. We need to find a way to go man-to-man the entire game and make sure that our DBs can cover and not give them such a cushion off the line. A zone coverage has killed us all year.

You could time our DB’s with a Calendar…

Recruiting all those 4 and 5 star players puts us in a better position to play man-to-man as long as they don't hang onto the receiver the whole route.

Seems like every time we have a good coverage play that laundry get thrown on to the film. Some of these replays I can't see interference at all. Some of the flags are so slow in coming out. I would think our DBs are discouraged. I hear they didn't turn back and look at the ball. That is not the rule. I understand it helps not get called but you can't have a flag thrown because they don't look back.

Zone defenses are designed to get pressure on the QB with 4 rushers and force the ball out quickly so the 7 in coverage can make a play, think Tampa 2. The problem UGA has is that the 4 rushers can't get pressure and the QB has all day to pick apart the zone. With a zone defense, you can defend with more defenders (7) than the max receivers (5). Man-to-man allows the defense to send more pressure, but if it doesn't get there in time, the DBs are exposed and often don't have help deep. The Tennessee game was an example of Chris Brazzelle and Aguilar feasting on man-to-man coverage. The best thing is to mix coverage, but the bottom line is the UGA DBs are going to have to get better at playing the ball in man-to-man.

I’d rather struggle with high upside guys like Ellis and Demello. I know what I’m getting with Daniel Harris.

    We run a 4-3 and a 4-2-5 (star position)

Most all of this centers around the down 4 lineman first, getting pressure and not taken out of position to make a play. They are pretty good on run defense, but is pass defense we are talking about.

As far as mixing zone and man 2 man - thinks we may be better off in letting the DB’s grow up out there and play more man to man. Not totally, it all just depends on several factors.

Linebackers are mostly in zone already. They key off the running back, QB and if the TE releases or not…. in addition to playing the run. If the QB drops, they drop - if he rolls they roll, if he runs they come up. Again, in addition to reading the RB & TE. So, they are mostly in a zone unless they are asked to blitz ….or rarely “spy”.

Picking up your keys is vital, eye discipline is vital - especially in RPO’s, options and misdirections.

Not sure how you mix the DB’s in zone and man 2 man…unless you are speaking of the safety/safeties.

If the backers blitz, they give up coverage, same as with a safety or CB..so you better make it work or pay big time.

And if everything works to perfection - you got to make a play - hence, execute.

FWIS, youth, inexperience and quality depth has caused most all of the issues. They are just going to have to grow up.

Not a schematic issue for the most part imo. They all have to do their jobs before the D’ works.

“All plays work if you execute”.

The good thing is, I certainly don’t see the lack of effort out there.

Thinks the staff is doing a helluva job, feels like it’s all being held together with chewing gum & a coat hanger until they grow up.

Yes, live and die with man to man. Because zone is a death sentence for this defense. And has been since 23, JC and JD were the reason we could get pressure rushing 4. We just don't have that anymore. Win or lose it's always...

At all 3 levels of the defense, we have been average at best, I thought the secondary would be a strength and it has not been. The backers have been hit and miss. We have absolutely no influence on the Qb at all. He has time to pick apart this secondary. I don't see how it improves and yet we are 1 play from being undefeated.

The defensive scheme doesn't matter (4-3/3-4, whatever) when it comes to playing man or zone coverage. I didn't mean a combination man/zone mix when I said mix coverage, I mean play zone sometimes and man sometimes. The important thing is to disguise which coverage you're playing so the offense can't run plays to take advantage of the coverage. Each coverage has advantages and disadvantages based on personnel and situation. KS likes boxing analogies, well a good boxer makes every punch look the same when he throws it, so his opponent doesn't know what's coming.

Sure the defensive “scheme” matters. You generally don’t want to put 8 in the box - or run a gap 8 or say a 46 defense against an Ole Miss or say a UT most of the game…and you certainly don’t want to run a split 6 or 6 - 2 defense, in general. A goal-line D’ may be different.

The 4-3 and 4-2-5 is what the Dawgs generally run and they do it for a reason. It’s also adjustable to the situation.

The offense doesn’t know if you’re running a zone or man 2 man until the ball is snapped…unless he is inside the huddle or stealing the signs.

He can guess, but that is about it. No way to disguise your intent (zone/m2m) just like there is no way to disguise a play call. Defense or Offense.

Allignments you can recognize (both sides) & adjust from there.

That’s why they have huddles. Once the formations are set for O’ and D’ - the rest is guessing game.
