Joseph Jonah-Ajonye, Nnamdi Ogboko ready to take on bigger role on Georgia football DL
Joseph Jonah-Ajonye, Nnamdi Ogboko ready to take on bigger role on Georgia football DL
Heâs one of the few veterans on the Georgia defensive line and someone who occupies a lot of space. That he was playing some of his best football makes his knee injury all the more devastating.

Really high on Ogboko. Like what I saw in limited snaps. Need a big guy to clog it up and get to the QB every once in a while. They recruited these superstars like Jonah-Ajonye, and they have snaps under their belt. Next man up!
"Ogboko is the only Georgia defensive lineman with a sack this season." In 8 games. Safe to say that the CFB world has caught on to the (outdated?) Saban D that CKS deploys at UGA.
“They were really recruiting him here to play first-down, second-down, but he’s been turning a lot of heads in the pass rush. So I feel like that’s what we’re gonna use him for.”
We need these guys on the DL to establish themselves as targets for a double-team by the opposing OL. That makes for better lanes for a LB or safety to blitz on the pass plays, and frees up at least one of the LBs to step in and make a play at or behind the LOS when they run the ball. Jordan Davis, Devonte Wyatt, Travon Walker, and Jalen Carter were all nightmares for the OL and had to be double teamed. Even when they didn't make the play, each were probably occupying two offensive linemen!
GO DAWGS!
Yes indeed @UGADad20
That poor outdated Bama style defense employed by Kirby is a pathetic 3rd best in the SEC. Perhaps the real factor this year is that the SEC defenses for the most part are a lot less experienced and seasoned this year as indicated by the fact that the two teams ahead of UGa on the defensive side (OK/MIZ) both have more returning starters. Am I excited about how we're playing defense this year, absolutely not! But the realist in me recognizes we replaced a lot of TOP SHELF talent from a year ago. The deployed system if fine, it's the execution that is lacking, give the kids time, this is afterall a rebuilding year on that side of the ball. They're certainly great fighters…
Nothing at all what so ever against Jordan Hall. But the big man has had several, several serious injuries and resulting surgeries. Now bless his heart he’s injured again. I hope he gets fully well and soon.
But because of his past medical history perhaps it’s slowed him some And diminished his strength ? So wouldn’t it be Great for the team if the guys stepping in to replace him have an awesome game for the Dawgs ? Not trying to wish off bad things on Hall but as he’s a DGD, he would Want those guys to do really well for his team. Maybe he himself can come back better than before, I hope so. I wish him the best for his career in the long term. But we need his replacements to really shine going forward in this game and the games to follow. Go Dawgs !!
Once upon a time, the bears 46 defense was the thing. Everything evolves. The problem is, offenses have so many more looks that they might use. If you new exactly what they were going to do, you could scheme for it every time. Florida got caught chasing Z branch, and Stockton hit Thomas for a touchdown. All this is happening with student athletes that have to go to class and get limited reps. If something new shows up, everyone copies it. I don't think Kirby's defense is outdated. I think his kids are young, and some of them are making mistakes.
I used to think the 3-4 was a good idea. Theoretically the O doesn't know where the 4th rusher is coming from. That should be an advantage. The problem is that the 3 down lineman are all basically DT's not exactly known for passrushing. So the 3-4 takes away 1 DE passrusher for 1 gap controlling runstuffer.
The UGA DL has 1 sack in 8 games. Granted UGA only technically plays 3 DL. But if you add in reserve and OLB #0 and #99 the sack grand total rises to ……1 sack.
The UGA D is inexperienced? #'s 3, 5, 52, 44, 0, 9,19 and 99 all have multiple years of experience in the system. Talent wise they are all high 4* or 5* players. Transfer #18 was a sack machine last year and freshman #29 is a very athletic 6'5" 265 lb player. They can barely get on the field let alone sniff a sack. Whether the UGA defenders are experienced or inexperienced the bottom line is 1 sack, last in the SEC in sacks and 111th in the country. Other teams with far less talent do better. It is as if UGA is playing a "prevent D" all the time.
That bend but don't break philosophy puts UGA at #26 on D overall, #65 in passing D and #15 in rushing D.
UGA D dominance has always been about stacking and rotating better defenders not on scheme. The front 7 scheme has always been predictable. Predictability (Saban's D figured out) can be schemed against, as we are seeing this year. Without a pass rush UGA will be significantly handicapped in the playoffs.
The last 15 (?) Super Bowl champs and the last 2 CFB champs all play 4-3.
i don’t think Saban ever changed his defense though. I think our main issue is we don’t have a nose that can command two blockers nor a guy like Jalen Carter who was unblockable when he was fully motivated.
Must admit whether I agree with your opinion or not, I certainly enjoy your pov. Excellent take but I certainly would like to counter a point or two…the stats I see show UGa 21st overall, 65th pass and 60th defensive pass efficiency and they are15th against the run but here is another one of my fun facts related to that…UGa is the only SEC team to have faced the top 3 offensive passing teams in the SEC…contrare, and unsurprising, UGa is the only team that has NOT faced any of the top 3 SEC leaders in rushing. Let that sink in for a second. Wasn't it Kirby earlier this year that said Stats are fun but do they really matter? or something like that…
As for his antiquated 3-4 defense, certainly we can agree that when you have a dominant NT it works. When you don't, it doesn't. 3-4 defenses are the best option against pass happy defenses with mobile QBs in my opinion but to be dominant, it starts up front and this year we certainly are not. I suppose you could change mid season to a base 4-3 but with a young inexperienced defense I'll leave it to the experts on UGa's staff to ascertain if doing that is better than trying to continue to coach the kids up in the system they have been exposed to for their first few years in Athens.
I did read somewhere that 7 Super Bowls were won by teams using a version of the 3-4 defense between 2005 and 2017 so I would probably argue the 15 straight super bowl champs part. Belichik loved it…Ryan Day base is 4-3 but goes to the 3-4 often in obvious passing downs and depending on the competition utilizes it quite a bit at times, but then he is getting great push from his interior linemen…something I hope to start seeing in our Dawgs soon.
