SEC coach rips CFP: Did committee get first rankings right?
SEC coach rips CFP: Did committee get first rankings right?
But Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz is taking issue with the College Football Playoff system, right down to the application of metrics and usage of former coaches on the selection committee.
Comments
Agree 100% with Drink. Their strength of schedule (SOS) add has been immediately watered down with their record strength which is a nice way of saying we still rely on what we hear and not necessarily what the data tells us. Anything that includes the AP has to be suspect because that remains what people think - just look at FSU the past 2 seasons and how they have moved up and down the AP rankings with single game swings - they have moved 10-12 spots over 1 game. It is ridiculous.
Almost hate to say it, but unless they turn to AI or back to the computer days of the BCS, too much subjectivity will remain. No matter what they say, SOS hasn't made much of a difference at all because they figured out a way to explain it away. The commissioner even stated he felt the OSU and Indiana looked better on offense than A&M - who is to decide that and in the end, who cares. As long as you are beating superior teams, it shouldn't matter how you are doing it. To quote a passed lunatic that was in pro football - just win baby.
College football doesn't need to become even more like the pros by constantly expanding the field; the shifts towards pro ball (NIL, unlimited transfers, etc) is already having a huge negative impact. The college game has always been different and should always remain different. At this rate, a return to the days of it being strictly extracurricular are not far off and I'd be in favor just to get a semblance of order to return.
Regardless, Go DAWGS!
Drink is a quirky fellow but spot on regarding a defined playoff system versus a subjective one…but until they do away with elite talent being able to transfer every year does it really matter? He wants an NFL model, so do I, it’s called contracts and commitments. It’s called you want my elite QB, who are you going to trade me in return? What a pandora mess they have created…in his model comparison Drink failed to mention that fact
Look at the mediocrity in the NFL. College football is headed straight down that path.
A handful of schools with a title chance and then the rest.
Putting 20 teams in the playoffs won't change performance and career assistants moving from one average team to another chasing an empty dream.
Eli is exactly right about the current CFP. The big ten is paper thin and the top two teams would Likely not be undefeated in the SEC. Then ND with two losses is ranked ahead of Mizzou, Vandy, Texas and Oklahoma without explanation. With Michigan and Penn State imploding the Big Ten is more comparable to the ACC.
If SOS mattered, A&M would be #1, Bama #2, The Dawgs #3, Ole Miss #4, Indiana #5, Oregon #6, TX Tech #7, TOS #8, OK #8, BYU #9, Virginia #10
I agree with Eli. The Committee uses too much eye-test in its rankings. It's very subjective. The SOS use appears to be better utilized after this first set of rankings, but A&M should definitely be ranked #1 or 2.
I'm all for play-in games instead of automatic bids. More wear and tear on the players, but hey, they're getting paid now so it's essentially a job...just like the NFL.
Concerning Ohio State...I do think their #1 ranking is probably deserved whether or not their SOS warrants it. I could go either way -A&M or the Buckeyes as #1, though OSU has mostly dominated their opponents. The Buckeye's quarterback, Julian Sayin, is completing 80 percent of his passes. He has arguably the two best receivers in the country in Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. His offensive line has allowed three sacks all season. And Ohio State’s defense, which is allowing the fewest yards per play (3.75) of any team in the last decade, is as sound a unit as there is in the country - even after last season lost a lot of players to the NFL and now they have a new DC. We'll see how they play against Michigan and most likely Indiana in the B1G Championship game.
It's the first set of rankings, so we all know things will change. The cream rises to the top...
Not sure what BEamer is griping about. No one is losing their job because they didn't make the playoffs one year. Beamer is safe for at least one more season, but it's not because he isn't making the playoffs, it' s becasue he's barely over .500 as a coach at SC. Eli D isn't going to lose his job, as a matter of fact he may get a better one. Key at GT isn't going to lose his job, if they don't make it. He could probably move upward if he didn't love GT so much. Kiffin didn't lose his job last season even though they choked and didn't get in.
THese coaches today at major programs get paid tons of money. THe alumni and fans want a return on that money. PErception is everything, are we improving under this guy , or are we just treading water, or are we getting worse? Fans will only take treading water for so long. and getting worse, as in LSU's case, not ong at all.
The old days of get a cushy job at some big school, and doing just enough (like go to the Sunshine Bowl evey year) to be relevant and have a .600 winning percentage gets you a safe 30 year career are over.
So, in a sense Beamer is right I guess, at 8 mil a year, the playoffs did change things to the degree that you can't just keep throwing out a 7-5 team or even 8-4 team and miss the playoffs and stay there forever. Bowl game now are just an after thought for fans.
Record strength and strength of schedule would seem to be synonymous to me. ???
It won't be long before the playoff field is expanded. Too much money involved not to. Probably at the expense of the conference championship games. I wonder how long Drinkwitz stays at MO? He seems to be an ambitious little bug (that begs to be stepped on) chomping at the bit to go to FU, AU or LSU.
We're playing too many games, spending too much money and making much too big a deal out of what used to be an amateur, fun sport. There is no college football. It's NFL AAA football now. You're school means nothing.
Hey Dink, win the SEC and you're in. That's your playoff.
lol..just win your games and you are in. Some of these coaches want a back door entrance to the playoffs. I do agree that it should be like college baseball and basketball in selection but it’s alway been human voices deciding the fate of championship game in college football
Looks like(on paper at least) Ohio St is set to repeat as NC's. Listening to pundits talk about they have 1st round draft picks at every position group. Sort of reminds me of us 3-4 years ago. What happenend?
This committee changes their criteria week to week to whatever fits their narrative for that week's rankings. It should be one set of criteria and ALL teams are measured against that. Right now, their criteria makes the BIG10 schools schedule nothig but cupcakes favorable even though they told us that Strength of Schedule and Record Strength only matters to the lower ranked teams. GO DAWGS!
