"Given how successful Georgia has been over the years, it’s hard to argue with the results of a slower development."
A quibble: the role that QB play has had in UGA's success under Kirby Smart. The defense, running game and offensive line all play bigger roles and sometimes special teams plays almost as big a role.
Quibble 2: look at Ohio State and Notre Dame this year (true sophomore QBs) plus the guys who got the starting job in their 1st or 2nd years and won titles (Jalen Hurts, JJ McCarthy, AJ McCarron, Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston, Trevor Lawrence). Note that McCarthy, Watson, Winston and Lawrence also all left college at the end of year 3.
The argument favors getting the guy on the field as fast as possible if he is good enough. Late bloomers like Stetson Bennett IV (a completely different player in 2022 than he was in 2020) and Joe Burrow still happen but not nearly as much as in the past. (Before anyone says "Jalen Hurts" please recall that he was SEC offensive player of the year as a redshirt freshman. Had Saban been willing to run basically the same offense that Hurts later won a Super Bowl with for the Eagles instead of being determined to stick with the Lane Kiffin offense, Hurts would have never regressed, gotten benched and transferred.)
I wonder what effect the Jared Curtis decision will have on the Vanderbilt quarterback room. For the Vanderbilt coach to essentially give an incoming freshman a starting job without earning it, how does that make the incumbents feel? Even if there is a "competition", you have to believe the scales will be seriously tilted in favor of the freshman. Drew Dickey (1 yr of eligibility) was not able to play in 2025 due to a cardiac issue and likely never sees the field again. Blaze Berlowitz (2 yrs of eligibility), the current backup QB, transferred from New Mexico State where he was also the backup to Diego Pavia (no more eligibility). Jeremy St-Hilaire (2 yrs of eligibility), Whit Muschamp (3 yrs of eligibility), and Jack Elliott (4 yrs of eligibility) were all 3 star recruits coming out of high school. I am not sure if the transfer portal is a viable alternative for any of them, but I wouldn't blame them if they tried to find out.
Fully agree Chief. This is what I believe will happen to. So our QB room will be just as sound and solid as most other teams in terms of depth.
Yeah, he’s a Dore. As a Christian, I hate that this kid professes to be one also and then acts like his word is meaningless. A very poor witness for Christ. There was no need to play this dishonest game at the expense of his integrity.
But to answer the question in the headline: It means we will have one less drama queen on the roster.
Need a forth scholarship QB…..why not look to D-2…..just like LK did to snag Trinidad Chambliss from Ferris St…..the current 10/0 Ferris St QB is Carson Gulker, Junior, 6'3", 240 a Pro style QB who runs over tacklers….sounds like a SB IV on steroids.
Let's hold the phone a minute. After Raiola and Curtis, I don't take it for granted at all that Wade eventually signs with UGA. So all of this talk about him reclassifying is fine, but first he needs to sign an LOI. Let's revisit this issue after that happens.
Glad he's going to Vandy, since he jerked us around so bad. Looking forward to beating his ass.
Don’t have a problem with Curtis wanting to start and not sit a year or so, my guess is that he was another Fields and would have been gone after the first season. My problem is how he jerked the coaches around with his indecision. After his first decommit he should have just left it open and said, let me weigh my options. When he went that Vandy game, I knew he was gone. Players want to make it about them and I’ve followed Georgia football over 45?years and even Walker, one of the greatest dawgs didn’t make it about him. I do like KS response about only worrying about his players who are committed.
As a Christian I agree. Just like Lane Kiffin said he prayed and God told him to leave Ole Miss. Hey, not saying it didn’t happen, I don’t know Kiffin heart but I doubt God told him to go scorched earth on Ole Miss and threaten to take the coaching staff. Lane has told so many lies it’s hard to know if anything he says is true.
Feilds, Raiola and Curtis. We won 2 nattys with a walk on backup. Yeah Fields did ok at OSU but the QBs to me that play well are little known players. Georgia will be fine without a ME ME player especially at QB. Curtis needs to be on a team where he shines and can carry the team on his shoulders. He would never be that at Georgia.
I'm not losing any sleep over it.
Go, Dawgs!
