You can bet, there will be lots of roster movement again this year. Not much continuity from one year, to the next. But, that seems to be true for virtually, everybody else.
So....I guess the real question is...Do they have the funds to compete with the "big boys" in the annual player auction.….and upgrade at each position?
There are a lot of teams out there, doing more with less. Just sayin'. Lol
@UGADad20 I agree with your premise that more investment in the program is needed. But these aren’t “inferior “ players. The only thing White isn’t subpar at is recruiting. Blue was a 4 star. UNC wanted Catchings in the portal. Cal wanted Somto at UK & Ark. Ross started on a very good St Mary’s team last season. Jake is a top 50 recruit(who is not being used). Stagg is a 4 star. Your argument is simply false. And Demary is required to score as much on a UConn team that’s absolutely loaded but he’s probably their most of 2nd most valuable player.
Bingo. The vast improvement of Demary at UConn is telling, it’s not like he got buried on the depth chart because he was an inferior former Dawgs player. He now plays for a coach who demands discipline and buy in…and he is excelling. These kids at UGa are highly talented, they just need the right guidance on the court.
Admittedly "inferior" was a poor choice of words on my part. In terms of potential skill the UGA frontcourt players have high ceilings. The starting backcourt (0, 4) ? Not so much. UGA is stocked with talented albeit inexperienced players in the front court. CBB is guard dominant.
#'s 2, 5 and 6 are all soph's. #1 is a freshman. As for Ross, St Mary's is not the SEC. UConn had a 14 pt scorer transfer from St Mary's last season (Mahaney). Struggled mightily and ended up transferring out (UCSB) after 1 season. The skills of the players in the top conferences, like the SEC, are incredible.
I like this team. I think they have a good chance to make the big dance and surprise people. They just don't have the horses to be a Top 15 type team. Now had Asa Newell come back and you added him to this team you might have a top 10 (-13) team. That's how good the top teams are. W/o a Newell level player the young front court players will have to grow up fast and develop. The UGA backcourt does not measure up and will be the downfall this season.
If you think that Demery is UConn "2nd most valuable player" you haven't been watching UConn play. He is the 5th scoring option when he is on the floor w/the starters. Reed may still be UConn's leading scorer and rebounder. Karaban was All Big East in '25. Ball is an NBA 1st rd pick (and UConn MVP) in '26 and 5* 6'6" Freshman guard Mullin is already talked about as a lottery pick in '26. UConn lost its only game of the season when he was out injured. Demery is being pushed for his starting spot by Malachi Smith. Demery's size advantage over Smith is what is keeping him in the starting line up.
@BigDawg61 Yes there will be a lot of roster movement after the season. Welcome to CBB. In the face of the incredible turnover UGA has continued to be competitive.
"there are a lot of team's out there doing more with less". Name them?
"This ain't the "Team" that will get it done!
NO KILLER INSTINCT!
They're happy to be....just a mid-level conversation piece with a few good players.
Not Champions....somebody on that team had better do a "gut check"....if they have any aspirations at all, of "competing" in any tournament. Just sayin'...I call it like I see it.
Smh....missing layups and casually handling the ball....ain't gonna cut it, White."
OR
"there are a lot of teams out there doing more with less"
Which is it?
@UGADad20 fair points made but here's one, under CMW Silas avg'd 11.5 points 2.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. Under the guidance of a more disciplined and creative coach his numbers are 10.6 points (-.9) 6.1 assists (+3.3 and 23rd in the nation) and 6.1 rebounds (+2.2). His FG % 3Pt % and shooting % are all UP and his turnover rate is down. He is clearly more engaged in an offensive scheme that is so much more complex than the Mediocre Mike style of play. His point per game average is down because he isn't forcing everything like he had to under CMW.
Oh, and to your last question, I'm not sure how many teams have lower ranked players but I do know that UGa has more former 4stars on roster than Texas and aTm, so that's at least two teams doing more with less. I'm sure there are others but 247Sport doesn't post the basketball team talent rosters anymore so it ain't easy figuring out rosters with all the annual migrations going on…cheers mate
Not sure where you are getting your info on the TX basketball player rankings. I didn't research it but it is hard to believe TX isn't paying more than UGA for basketball players. i.e. "higher ranked players". Based on what we have seen with TX football and TX women's basketball (#4) why would we expect TX basketball to not be buying better players than UGA?
BTW TX's coach is Sean Miller. Pretty high profile guy. His average salary on his new contract is $5.3 M/yr. CMW makes $3.9 M/yr. after his 10/25 extension/raise. UGA bball was 4-5 in January (all SEC games). 2 of the losses were by a total of 3 pts. Young team growing pains. Coulda easily been 6-3 January with a little luck. TX bball was also 4-5 in January with their talent and high dollar coach.
As for Demery, his numbers are better for a myriad of reasons. First he is a year or 2 (best UGA player b4 Newell) older/stronger/better developed than he was at UGA. His role is different at UConn. He is the 5th leading scorer on the team. He is not expected to carry the scoring load (like at UGA) and be forcing shots because he is the best player on the team. The pressure is completely off him to carry the load . That will reduce turnovers. His role is to play D, distribute the ball to MUCH better shooters than at UGA (increased assist #'s) , and be selective shooting. NOT carrying the load on offense allows him more energy for defense and rebounding. It is amazing what taking only high % shots, many time's uncontested, will do for your shooting %. All that has way more to do with his "improved" play than any change in coaching style.
True CMW is not Hurley. Who is?
I suspect 1 of the main reason's UGA gets the highly ranked basketball players it does is because of CMW. UGA has taken baby steps to improve under CMW. But it has improved under CMW. Before CMW UGA basketball was not very good for a long time. Now it comes down to getting over the top by getting better players.
It is interesting that 2 of UConn's men's championships had state of GA players in the starting line up. '11 Jeremy Lamb from Norcross and '24 with Stephon Castle from Tift Co. State of GA's 2nd ranked player in '27 is Colben Landrew from Wheeler. Committed to? UConn.

Let’s agree to disagree and revisit this point after the next 6 SEC games, shall we? Year 4 and CMW hasn’t even achieved what Mark Fox did, at least he posted 6 seasons of 50%+ wins in his 9 years at UGa. White’s SECHO record is abysmal, he took a stacked FU roster built by Billy D to a winning SEC record in year 2 and it was all mediocre from there. That’s why they parted ways with him. In any event the next 3 weeks will tell the story of perceived improvement, untill then, go dawgs.
I completely agree with your overall assessment. Let's see if the movie has changed....or if the Song Remains the Same, as Led Zeppelin would say. The proof is in the pudding, this year...as far as I'm concerned.
Imo....If White can't win consistently with this roster....he has no business coaching in Athens. Just sayin.....get er done, White.
