Kirby Smart confident in roster building plan compared to SEC, College Football Playoff teams
Kirby Smart confident in roster building plan compared to SEC, College Football Playoff teams
At Georgia, he wants to make sure the Bulldogs do a better job of keeping their players out of the transfer portal, rather than just turning over the roster every year.

OSU at 32. hmmm
Maybe they are selling the farm and going ALL Indiana on everyone.
Smart is gambling on Freshmen developing qucikly to win a NC? I see that as a huge risk. If he can pull it off, more power to him, he could manage to get another NC or two over the next 4-6 season if he pulls it off.. Or we could barely lose again in the playoffs and have just enough "if we had zigged there instead of zagging" we could have won to keep perpetuating the notion we can develop the youngsters quick enough. And just enough baked in excuses that CKS keeps believing that CMB is the right OC for us(even if we keep losing in the playoffs) when there was a golden opportunity to win if we had called the right plays at the goalline (didn't we see this movie before when Aaron Murray was insructed not to spike the ball against BAMA, or am I misremembering??
Indiana will be interesting to keep and eye on. THey brought in the TCU QB so MEndoza's little brother transferred out. Pretty shrewd to (I'm guessing) to tell the NC QB I appreciate your taking us to the NC and winning it but your little bro won't be our starting QB next year, we're bringing in a ringer from TCU!. Brutal honesty seemingly to me. Hge decision!
Indiana brought in a dozen TP players this year, though it appears the majority of them have more eligibility left than than the previous group they brought in did. THey also had 11-12 who tranferred out. I'd be interested to know if those who left didn't see themselves in a starting role in 26 or if the money offer was too good to pass up on from the other schools?
I’ll dip into the Junkyard Mail next time at the Junkyard Blawg, and I’d like to hear what your expectations are for the Dawgs this coming season and any concerns you might have. Also, feel free to ask questions — or share your views on anything related to UGA athletics. You can email me at junkyardblawg@gmail .com.
Let’s just say Georgia hires you as the next coach this year - you have the reins, what would you do differently??…you’re on the clock.
@Eastman Dawg
So what exactly do you take issue with what I said? Please be specific.
I'm old school. Prolly too old school for my own good, lol. Yes, I prefer CKS' philosophy to retain and develop players over the long term. But, will it work in this NIL/TP era? Let's face the congregation here folks, it's all about money now. Sad, but it's true. Gone are the days when a Georgia kid would gnaw off a finger for a chance to pull on that red jersey and run out that tunnel as a Georgia Bulldog. Kidding me? There was absolutely nothing better in the world for my generation.
Lord help us moving forward.
I really hope that Kirby is right and these kids buy into staying home for 3 to 4 years, that philosophy hasn't worked out to well for Dabo. In a perfect world you have 3 to 4 years to develop and coach up elite talent, oh wait, that perfect world ended on exactly October 15th of 2018…
You seem very unhappy about the way Kirby is managing the football program - right??
Or at least that is certainly the impression I am getting.
The question was a simple one - if you were head coach, how would you do it differently than Kirby???
It’s the dead season . I appreciate the articles and also the comments . No matter if I agree or not so keep them coming and Thanks ! It’s a boring time for college football .
Imho...."It's all about the money"....for most people. But, not all people. Kirby's lookin' for "the few good ones" that can take criticism and hard coaching. Who's first instinct, isn't to retreat.
This thing with CFB...imo....is the perfect storm of; Covid Kids with a case of entitlement, The Pussification of America & The "Entitled Generation". Lol....not to mention greed.
The search has been on for grounded kids with a solid family support system.…steeped in God's teachings. Those are the kids that will persevere.
You can fix some....but, not all. As we've seen over the last several years.
Go Dawgs!
I just gave an opinion or two. It's what we all do on here. I don't believe I said anything that would deem me "very unhappy". I just made a statement that others have made that Kirby is trying the "develop young guys fast" model. As opposed to the TP model. THe develop young guys faster has never been Kirby's model, especially at certain positions. That has never been our hopes in the past. I remember not too long ago where Jalen Carter was used sparingly as a FR. He was developed slowly as opposed to what's taking place today. However times have cahnged. So we're admittedly in unchartered terratory as far as which model(s) will be the best moving forward. As I stated if Kirby can pull it off and say next season we make it back to the playoffs and actually advance or lo and behold win it all, then no one could posibly argue with Kirby's model. RIght? Count me all in! And if it works, like I said, I could see UGA winning another NC or 2 over the next few years. I hope it works! Nothing to be unhappy about there!
However, what if we don't make it back to the playoffs or if we do and don't win a game in it again? Are we then in a new era of we're just glad to be relevant? We had that under Richt. DIdn't we? 10 wins a year. But fans wanted a NC and so CMR was fired not because he did anything wrong ,except he couldn't win the Natty. We were so hungry for one. Now that we have two under our belt are we becoming complacent and willing to settle for being a top 5 team every year? I realize the old model of just receruit the best and coach the best are a thing of the past, no one's going to pull off a string like Saban did there over 10 years ever again..
It's going to take more innovation(I believe) than ever before to win a Natty. I think what Cignetti did this year was simply amazing. Like I said it will be interesting next season to see if his model will resemble or approach what he did this year. Maybe it was just a fluke of the right group of guys coming together at just the right time( as it always is). Ole Miss was just one completed pass away from playing in the NC game and it would have pittd the two heaviest TP teams against each other! THink about that.
If we don't advance again next year can any UGA fan like myself question anything about the program at that point without someone (maybe like yourself) getting "snappy" about their concerns? Or being called, not a true fan? No that you would do that.
If all we're allowed to be on here are fans that say "Everything is Great" and "Don't raise any questions about play calling by the OC or in game decisions by Kirby or which model is going to be more fruitful moving forward in the NIL and TP Era to use" then this is nothing more than a homer board for homer fans. Please don't confuse being a homer fan with someone who has to do deep breathing excercises in tense games in order to calm his hear rate at 68 but does have occassional concerns and sometimes questions things.
I kind of like to give my opinions and do a little Monday morning quarterbacking without being labled a Debbie Downer(which I don't believe anyone can prove that I am). I like discussing different opinions and trying to back them up with at least a decent argument although I occassionly miss the mark and will gladly say so, with a better counter argument or more valid reasoning. Cheers!
I think Kirby's gonna do something, this year...that he's been trying to avoid.
Imo.…he's going to simplify the defense....and, allow the athletes to be athletes. He doesn't have 2 or 3 years to teach an NFL system, anymore.
It'll be close....but, not the same. It does no good, to have a complicated defense....if only 2 or 3 guys can execute it properly.
Kirby said from the get-go....Each player requires a certain number of quality reps, before they "know what they're doing". 1 year ain't enough.
Typically....under Kirby's current program a player wouldn't be "ready", till sometime in their Junior Year.
Imo....If you simplify and accelerate development....I think you become more competitive on the Saturday field.......but, come Sunday's....you won't be as prepared.
Other programs, such as OSU, have already made that adjustment, which is why you have skill players entering the NFL, less prepared and more entitled than ever before.
Lolol....everybody talks about how the "New CFB" is destroying the game at the College level. When actually, it's having a negative impact up and down the chain....with respect to quality of football and officiating on the field.
For instance....I couldn't care less about the Super Bowl. Which I had forgotten about till recently. Watching the NFL, today.....is akin to watching wrestling with my Grandparents when I was a kid.
This ain't the game I grew up on. Ya can't even take pride in a solid hit, anymore.. without wondering if it's gonna be accompanied by a flag and a 5 minute review. And then....THEY STILL GET IT WRONG! Lmao
You imho made some reasonable comments. I’m in the opposite boat from you though. Because I Try to see things about the Dawgs more positively. I get accused of wearing rose colored glasses. Of Never seeing Anything wrong or if there are question marks. Those are pretty insulting labels as they paint me and other fans who feel similar as me as being utterly naive and very ignorant about the game.
I’m not being sarcastic at Anyone and that includes you. But I don’t recall Any season having At Least some question marks. And most years had some Problems along with the question marks.
And This year does have question marks and also problems. What frustrates me is the attitude Some Dawgs fans have about the 2025 season. Some seem to imply it was a Losing Season. And that’s Not accurate nor is it fair to KS and the players that busted their butts to make that season happen.
Twelve Wins and the SEC Crown ( which doesn’t seem to mean much to Some fans) only Two Losses with a Combined 8 points given up. To me that’s a Very, Very good season !!
Now these things said should Dawgs fans Settle for it and be Satisfied ? NO !! NO WAY !!
Always, Always set the Ntl. Title as the goal !! Expect even demand that Kirby, his Staff, and the Players give everything they have to accomplish that goal !!
If Any of us have Any kind of understanding of Kirby Smart then we Know He’s not satisfied. It’s just not in his competitive DNA !!
If people are honest I doubt many people thought in the pre 2025 season our Dawgs would win 12 games. There were So many guys that had moved on to the NFL. Others exhausted eligibility. To Me there were Far More question marks And problems going into the 2025 season than the 2026 season !!
And in terms of his whole body of work Gunner Exceeded preseason expectations by Most fans And the most media. So where are we now ? I Believe at a minimum the Dawgs will at least get deeper into the playoffs. And I honestly Believe they Can win the Ntl. Title !! Why ? Because if Gunner and the O improve just Some and the Defense improve just Some it’ll be Enough !!
Dawgs fans aren’t to keen about giving rivals any credit. But OM was a Very good team and Chambliss an excellent QB !! He and OM had the game of their lives to beat our Dawgs. Really by only 3 points as everyone in the country knows the Safety play for 2 points was an act of Desperation and was fatally flawed from the start.
I Believe Kirby Can and Will either solve problems out right Or diminish them to the point they are not as damaging. For Me I Have to think that way !! OR stay miserable Before, During, and After the season. And I watch them to Enjoy not to punish myself !!
There’s Nothing wrong with acknowledging that there Are question marks and even problems. But neither is there anything wrong with Trusting our HeadCoach either. In this new climate which makes it Extremely hard to win a Ntl. Title I’ll take any and all they win !! But I figure one every 4-5 years is realistic. One every 3 years would vastly exceed my expectations. So I’m Hoping and Believing that This year or 2027 is Our year. So what if that doesn’t happen ? It will depend on what we Did do. Have to gauge it at That time. Go Dawgs !!
