GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Georgia coach Kirby Smart says he’s an advocate of expanding the College Football Playoff, whether it’s from the current 12 teams to 16 or 24.

    A 24 team playoff could infuse more interest in the mid-tier bowl games like the Gator, Liberty, etc if they are used for the games. It would definitely be good for the charities most of them sponsor. Go Dawgs!!!

    Agreed. The FCS has been at 24 teams in their playoffs for many years (after an 11 or 12 game regular season). Start the season at Week 0, and get rid of Conference Championship games. We've been on this trajectory for a while now, but it's taken incremental steps to get most folks to buy-in. We will get there eventually, hopefully sooner than later. It's inevitable.

    It was dumb of Texas and Oklahoma to get in the SEC. Set up a 4 team playoff and reset conferences. Conference win should be one of the playoff games. Low tier bowls next. It's a mess now. NCAA is worthless.

    Killing the golden goose. Prices are already through the roof.

    12 is already too many. 24 is absurd.

    Kirby is for a bigger CFP and I am for the occasional Bulldawg basketball or baseball article. I wonder who gets what they want soonest…

    Guess I will comment about last night’s game in Vandy here instead. Was really impressed with how the team fought back from a disastrous start. Never easy winning on the road in the SEC. The energy CMW has his team playing with deserves recognition.

    “I think 24 teams is good for the fan bases,” Smart told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I think when coaches and ADs look at it, we’re looking at our fan bases having an expectation that they want to be in the playoffs — it’s playoffs or bust.”

    This seems almost intentionally obtuse. No one is going to care about merely making the playoffs when you make it so inclusive that it's not even an achievement. Not being a playoff team will be the new unranked.

    To say nothing of Smart's outright admission that it's nothing but a cash grab. Unless he's the new Jonathan Swift, this is a really bad look.

    @Kasey…you are incorrect.

    The FCS has Twenty-four (24) teams. This single-elimination tournament consists of 11 automatic conference bids and 13 at-large selections. The top eight seeds receive a first-round bye, while the remaining 16 teams play in the first round.

    I should know. I live in NW Montana and watched Montana State win the Championship this past season.

    Yep…24 teams since 2013. I believe Div III has around a thousand teams in their playoff trying to win the coveted No Name trophy at the famous Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl finale…

    oh, and GO BOBCATS! That win over Ill St was one of the wildest finishes to a game that I've seen in a long time…blocked pat in OT followed by a 4th down TD and successful pat for the W…

    @Gramster…Yes! That was quite a game. And the fact the Bobcats knocked off the Bison earlier in the playoffs was a pretty huge deal. I don't have any skin in the game with either the Bobcats or the Griz (Dawg alum), but plenty of rabid fans around here do. It's just fun to cheer on the local teams.

    Cost of doing business, Smart said. That is disgustingly it. Money. Money. Smart, of all people should know that increasing the playoff field means playing four, or even five extra games to win a championship. That is almost like a second season. The regular season loses much of its meaning, especially winning the "big games." A team could make the playoff with three, maybe even four losses. All the tradition and drama of the regular season is lost.

    It will become more of a crap shoot who wins the championship instead of the best team.
