Tyler Simmons was called offsides on a blocked punt against Alabama in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game .
The play occurred early in the second half of that championship match, with Georgia leading 13–0. Alabama was punting from its own 24‑yard line, and Simmons blocked the punt deep in Alabama territory. However, the line judge flagged him for offsides, and the ball was dead at the spot of the penalty. Replay review showed Simmons had timed the snap correctly and was not offsides.
The head referee, Dan Capron, later admitted in 2020 that his crew missed the call, and that the blocking backs had moved before the snap, which should have been a false start instead . The play became one of the most talked‑about moments of the game, and Simmons’ name was widely associated with the “Tyler Simmons was onside” meme.
