You better have the right game plan and backup plan to stop their QB. Needs to be a spy on the QB.
“If that (job) is for you to get to the throwing shoulder, or the quarterbacks’ feet — just affecting the quarterback with the pass rush — we know we have guys in the secondary that can play ball.”
Doing this with discipline seems to be the key for defending a guy like Chambliss. He can exploit an over-pursuit, missed gap assignment, or any situation where a defender tries to take a short cut to get to him quicker. Coming off the edge in a straight line toward the QB in the pocket seems to leave an escape route around that same edge. These dynamic QBs (like Chambliss and Sellars) love to spin around and run back around toward the side that the edge pressure is coming from. At that point the edge rusher is stuck inside and pursuing the QB from behind, and the linebackers and DBs have to break off of coverage and try to push him toward the sideline before he picks up 15 or 20 yards. These players understand this far better than I do, but in the heat of battle it doesn't always appear the way the Xs and Os show it on the white board! Johnson is right, he can trust the guys in that Dawgs secondary, and they can all trust their gifts of size, speed, and talent along with their excellent preparation and training. Work the plan and trust the process to bring home another "W"!
GO DAWGS!
100% correct on the over-pursue effect! Whenever we go against Chambliss we are atheletic enough to break through the OL and rush him, and then we get in kill mode and flush him out for a 20 yard gain. Got to be a way to coach this better!
Chris Cole needs to wear a different number for this game- 007
beat them down …….
This is the game i had circles all year!
