The reason these super hero children's movies keep getting made and with almost limitless budgets is simple, they are almost guaranteed to make 100s of millions in profits.
Don't blame the business people for supplying what sells. They will keep churning them out as long as the money keeps pouring back in.
Also, with DVD sales virtually nil these days, studios more rely on overseas ticket sales and these movies don't have much to lose in translation so they are almost always big hits
And here I thought funko pops was a cereal
Yeah, I don't really blame the industry...but like someone said earlier we have become a society of overgrown kids. Grown adults are packing the theaters to watch super-hero comic book movies and rave about them like they are some kind of cinematic masterpiece. I don't get it. It's all fantasy, CGI and violence. Shows the maturity level of the average movie goer.
Never been a fan of the genre, but compared to reality TV this stuff is fantastic
There is a ton of good fantasy and sci-fi books out there that would make great movies/series... I guess they don't have the name recognition of these Marvel movies. But I think they're better told stories. Hopefully they will see the drop off and realize that well has been tapped.
Speaking of... I hear the new Lego movie is doing horrible in sales. The first one was fantastic, but then they came out with ninja poo and batman poo.... and whatya know, people gave up on the franchise. Their hyperfocus on money has lead to bad products. And now that the world has shrunk and they focus on global sales we aren't getting what our culture enjoys the most either.
Kasey. foreign markets passed the domestic market in revenue for blockbuster movies several years ago. It's very true that ''Hollywood'' movies like superhero flicks and animation sell everywhere. I doubt a movie like The Godfather will ever be among the biggest money makers again.
The Wandering Earth is the top movie so far in 2019, it's pulled in around 700 million, close to double the 2nd place movie. It is a Chinese sci-fi movie, made in China with Chinese actors. A new studio was started there a few years ago. The founders hired American talent to build behind the scenes, they will become bigger and bigger players going forward. Oh, of the 700 million the movie has brought in, just 6 million was made in The US.
Sadly you're right. The character-driven $40-80 million dollar budget movie for grown people has gone the way of the dodo bird.
So done with movies now days, which is sad because I used to be a movie buff. Anyone remember Tombstone...I'm your huckleberry. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. Lots more examples that's just the one that came immediately to mind.
The only good thing about suicide squad (other than the OP's astute observations concerning HQ) was 21 Pilot's Heathens theme music (I have my teenage sons to thank for that lol). I honestly can't remember the last decent movie I've seen in the theater...I even left The Upside recently not real satisfied. Bohemian Rhapsody was ok only because it was Queen. Seriously, what's been 5 stars lately?
I'll stick with my Game of Thrones and be happy. Some of the best writing, cinematography, and production I've seen in a VERY long time.
I laughed my tail off with Tag. It WAY exceeded my expectations.
That arizona firefighter movie with Thanos was pretty good too.
And yes, GOT rules all.
But... yeh, slim pickens these days.
I absolutely loved Baby Driver
Hell or High Water was excellent
3 billboards outside ebbing missouri as well, but is a little gut wrenching
Wind River was the last movie that really blew my hair back
Yeah, didn’t see that coming
