Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:

- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

National Anthem etiquette....

I wish people would take the same energy they have about a song and cloth and direct it towards the veteran homelessness and suicide epidemic. Much more meaningful than flag etiquette

What he said
I get that, and almost left it out. But it’s so serious, so real, and relevant to here and now. Even engaging in an argument about standing for an anthem while that’s going down is my point. If it’s off topic, that’s okay. It’s just where my mind goes. Real effects of real policies versus symbolism.
I will ask one more time please leave the current situation out of it.....last time and I even said please....countdown clock to closing has started
I never said anything like that. I said consequences....such as loss of revenue like the NFL suffered with their **** kneeling thing. I don't have to respect or support your personal decisions. Nobody is advocating physical violence. That is absurd to even suggest anyone was. Feel free to do whatever you want, but I reserve the right to respond or not respond. If someone exercises their right to make a mockery of the National Anthem, they should probably expect some backlash.
I didn’t bring it back up, just replied. I was respectful and explained why it was mentioned the first time. Nothing meant by it.
That's not the point. Do what you want. Just understand that to people like me, intentionally disrespecting the flag or our National Anthem is despicable and offensive. Which is why I started this thread because I think a lot of people just don't know proper etiquette rules. Nobody is saying stand perfectly or GTFO. But intentionally disrespecting it just shows a lack of respect and gratitude for our great nation. Some of us take that stuff seriously.
Started out ok but the forum guidelines are specific about political rants. Not going to argue about it. My call and I asked Respectfully to stop.....
I understand what your point is. I was responding to this "love it or leave it" nonsense.
This is the part i don’t understand...
many people have died protecting our rights... yes.
let me build on that sentence...
many people have died protecting the rights of a country that treated them like poisoned animals upon their return.
Marginalized communities have soldiers and that fought and fight for freedoms that don’t extend to them from coast to coast...
I encourage anyone who thinks the USA is a bad place do some international travel. Most Americans have never left the country. I grew up in a military family and moved a lot. I did 20 years in the military myself. Basically 40+ years of moving around every 3 years. I lived in England during HS, traveled extensively in Europe. Been to Iraq, Kuwait, Japan, Canada, Mexico, and Russia as well. I believe this is the greatest country on the planet. That perspective comes from seeing how other people live.
We have a lot of people in this country who simply do not appreciate the freedoms and liberties we enjoy in the USA and don't understand how we came to secure those freedoms. That's why respecting the flag and National Anthem is important to me.
There are a lot of good things about this country and a lot of bad. I know that many people think that if you criticize your own country you are being unpatriotic. I feel just the opposite. I love my country and therefore want and expect it to be better.
Just to let you know, I too have traveled extensively. I lead student tours to all parts of Europe yearly. I'm try to teach students to be open to the good and bad of each place they visit. I also ask them to reflect on the things they learn about their own country. It's a mixed bag.
One thing I have learned is that we are unique in our obsession with overt patriotism. It's a little strange.
Time to shut this thread down---Please. I am OCD and I have to clear new message indicators when they pop up but i am not on this forum for political discussions.
Click and don't read then? That's what most people do
I was in the USMC and I do not stand at attention.
Hats off. Don't move. Right hand over heart. Face the flag if able to do so. No talking or looking around. No singing.
I don't see any politics going on here.
Yep.
One time I was in uniform with a group of Marines when I was stationed in Athens. We were downtown for some ceremony....don't remember what, but I was the XO and in charge of the group so everyone was following my lead. The announcer said "please rise for the National Anthem". I called everyone to attention and waited for the music to begin. It was live music and they started playing some weird intro that I did not recognize. I waited for the NA to begin...and waited....and waited. About half way through the song I realized it WAS the NA...some messed up, funky interpretation. I decided to hold everyone at attention and not salute. Thought that made more sense than saluting at the very end. Not sure it was the right call, but I fully expected people to come up to me after and ask why we didn't salute. Nobody did, but it still bothers me.
Are you saying assault is a legitimate response to peaceful expression of dissent?
I have a belief that ceremonial commands are only valid to active duty, active reserves, or inactive reserves, and once you've completed all that you just go to right hand on the heart, but at no time do you talk or move...and you do not sing.
Never said that, maybe you should read again. Convo split to nfl players kneeling, I don't judge kids. Nor do I believe everyone has to conform, that is the true definition of freedom. It was about showing respect when and where respect is due. Certainly anybody has the right to burn an American flag on the streets, but they also have the right to get the crap kicked out of them. Sorry I'm not sorry
