I think that's partially it, but not quite. There's no way that Smart would suggest he leave: he'd push Newman to keep trying and improving and fight for the job.

I heard a rumor at one point that Newman was demanding to be named the starter and Smart wouldn't do it, so Newman gave his notice. I think Newman WAY overestimates his abilities and I think that's showing. I don't follow NFL contracts, but to not only be not drafted but to not be offered a SINGLE DOLLAR of signing bonus indicates a real statement.

I mean, even Holyfield was given at least $20k guaranteed.

He came to UGA as a grad transfer and not an "I'm butt-hurt I'm not getting enough playing time and am leaving" transfer. I don't know what his degree is in, but I hope it will give him another career option when all the NFL teams realize he's a poser. Perhaps Kirby saw that , from the get-go. Newman could probably be a good coach, one day.

Newman was never a dawg. I really have no interest in his success or failure. I don't care.

This time last year I was excited about Newman being a Bulldog and guardedly optimistic that he could play well for UGA based on doing well at WF. Completely surprised he opted out especially with JTD still clearly not ready for SEC competition. It is a total mystery. I guess he didn't want to show too much and hope he was drafted high on size/potential. Seems to have backfired.

"Opting out" translated: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

How long will the Jamir Neuman story remain the lead story? This the third day.
