Food for thought for anyone who thinks Anderson returns to college football. Edge rusher Randy Gregory just signed a 5 yr/ $70M contract. $10M signing bonus $28M guaranteed. In 5 years in the NFL, Gregory has 16.5 sacks total and been suspended 3 times. Gregory is a similarly sized player with a similar skillset to Anderson. Anderson is not going to pass on this kind contract and risk injury to play any more college football. THEN go through a draft and be the property of 1 team when he can be free negotiate with 32 teams now if he goes undrafted. If he is cleared of these charges he will go straight to the NFL. It is a no brainer.
What did he make...or should I say lose, in the first 5 years?
Do you think Anderson would get anywhere near that kind of money as an undrafted free-agent? I say, not a chance. A 1st round draft pick, gets a standard 1st round deal, which is roughly the deal Gregory got after 5 years. After the draft, you lose that leverage. Anderson wouldn't see that kind of money for at least 3-4 years and he could suffer a career ending injury between now and then...in the NFL. Football is a risky game. I think I would sacrifice 1 year to see that money in 2023 vice waiting till 2025-26 for a "maybe", wouldn't you?
Anderson would not be a typical UDFA. Worse case he could still get 1st rd money w/o any risk. He will not play college football again.
But, didn't you say Gregory had been in the league for 5 years before he warranted that kind of money?
I don't see a team giving Anderson 1st round money as an undrafted free-agent. Why would they, out of the goodness of their heart? And, 32 teams didn't attend his individual workout prior to the Combine. 17 teams did. It's all about leverage in negotiations and after the draft, he won't have much. He'll still rate a decent contract, but, nowhere in the top 10 or 20 draft pick stratosphere, which is likely where he would have landed.
IF, he doesn't pull out of the draft AND, a team DOES draft him in the last round to lock in his services, just in case he's "Not Guilty"...THEN, he's screwed.
Either way, he's not gonna get the money he would have gotten, if this never happened...unless, he is allowed to hit the reset button.
LOL...I realize all this is based on a "what if". But, it makes for interesting conversation.
