Disagree with some of these scores!
OL - B+/A- Texas has a stout front 7 and lead the nation in a couple of important stats. We dominated in the trenches.
ILB - B-/C+. Two potential TOs were coughed up by Raylen and Cole. Two drops where the ball was right in their hands. Raylen, better pick up his play because Cole is nipping on his heels.
Overall - A Going to Austin and dominating from start to finish when the Refs were doing everything in their power to keep Texas in the game. Schu dialed up a masterpiece.
Gutsy game. We lost the Bama game on one missed defensive play. So, this team could actually be undefeated at this point. The most glaring weakness is in the passing game. Prior years we have been able to run up the score and did it using the passing game. It was always a threat and difficult for teams to defend. Hopefully we can pick up some guys who can catch the ball so we have a constant threat back in the passing game. A side benefit is that helps the running game, too. Go Dawgs!
I think Beck had a better game than his stat line. As others have pointed out, his receivers collectively had an awful game, and Beck came through when needed, both by passing and running (which I think goes a long way in addressing the leadership concern that some have expressed).
One of the interceptions ricocheted off the TE's hands. On the third one, it looked to me like he was expecting Smith to turn toward the sideline, and instead he cut inward. Can't really say which one of them got it wrong, so we can't know for sure that that one was Beck's fault.
All in all, not a great performance, but better than he's generally getting credit for IMO.
oh and QB - F 43 passes and only 175 yards and 3 INTs and lucky it wasn’t more. Horrible performance!
Yeah, nothing says terrible coaching like going on the road and beating the #1 team by 15. Solid assessment.
The drops by both receivers and defenders is very concerning. I see folks want to give Bobo an A. Well to each his own, but isn’t it fairly obvious that on 3rd and very short or 4th and very short the run right up the middle does not work? Stop calling that play! It’s just plain crazy to call that play. Run the toss sweep more than one time a game please.
Nevertheless, a great win on the road with horrendous officiating. Our guys showed guts and determination, especially on D. Yes, there’s a lot to clean up, but if these Dawgs ever put it all together it will be something to behold.
Go Dawgs! Keep working.
On sides kick F minus
We gave them momentum as the result of this fiasco
It wasn’t supposed to be an onsides. It was just not a good kick. Smart said as much in the conference.
I was at the game and these grades are pretty much in line with what I saw in real time — except I think our D-Line deserves at least an A, if not an A-plus. But, speaking for the dozens — if not hundreds — of UGA fans I was sitting around in the stadium, we could not understand why Bobo didn't run the ball more, especially in the first half. We were clearly whipping UT's D-Line. Beck (and the receivers) was clearly struggling but Bobo kept calling pass plays from an empty set. It was maddening to watch in person. And sometimes, what we gained via the pass, we could have probably run for that same yardage if not more. Beck should be throwing the ball 30-35 times a game, not more than 40, because the more he throws, the less accurate he seems to be. He was lucky to have only three interceptions because UT dropped a couple of more.
Beck didn't play well, but his WRs had issues getting separation, getting open downfield, making plays after the catch and catching the football. It has been an issue all season and will be an issue when UGA plays an OL and QB capable of handling Jalon Walker etc. better. Yes Beck's INTs came on horrible decisions, but at least one of them was a play shortly after a WR dropped a perfectly thrown ball on a play that should have gone for a long gain.
All the celebrating over Trevor Etienne getting 87 yards on 19 carries - though granted several were on that critical goal line situation where UGA finally punched it in on 4th down to seal the game - shows that UGA fans really have forgotten what RBs like Nick Chubb, D'Andre Swift and Sony Michel were capable of. And those RBs had OLs and passing games no worse than what UGA had Saturday. UGA has A LONG WAY to go to restore RB U from the Monken era. Granted the Monken era gave UGA two national titles so it was worth that and then some. But for UGA's long term ability to contend for titles, they need to get the RB recruiting back to where it was early in Kirby's tenure and improve the WR recruiting too.
Going into this game I believed the defense had to lead this team to victory and that’s the case for the rest of the season. The narrative has been the offense getting off to a slow start, but the defense has been getting off to slow starts since Clemson by allowing the opposing team to covert third downs and score on early drives. This team doesn’t have the offensive playmakers, starting with the QB, to be an offensively lead team, they will have to win with efficiency on offense and suffocating defense.
The in-game coaching should have been graded a C for last night; the second half onside kick was unnecessary when UGA had the momentum and the defense had dominated Texas. The decision to go for it in the fourth quarter was terrible with a two touchdown lead and a little over two minutes; punt the ball and force Texas to drive 80 yards.
@JimWallace I couldn't have said it better. Beck clearly doesn't have the chemistry with his receivers that he had with Ladd and Brock. You don't create that in days or even weeks. Our receivers, if they want to be receivers need to catch the ball. Beck may have been off a few times, but there were at least four "right in the hands" passes they missed. If you've ever tried on a pair of those gloves, it's hard to believe how theses drops happen. This isn't high school.
Very interesting comment. Thanks for sharing your in-the-stadium perspective. In my experience, it's a whole different game when you can see the whole field at once.
Can I ask a question or two?
How did our receiver corps as a group seem to be doing in terms of getting open? How well was Carson going through his reads? Was he throwing to the last read behind the line of scrimmage because he had no other option?
I'm not asking for anything more than was obvious from the stands (and mostly not on the tv screen so all I can do is surmise and guess).
Go, Dawgs!
There REALLY needs be a section that includes Coaching. In this case, Bobo definitely did a fantastic game, the defense was clearly absolutely prepared and Smart called a great game. A+
The defense overall should be an A as it's one of the best performances I've seen in years from the group.
Definitely agree on WR. When someone like Smart who is straightforward but also careful with his words says the performance was almost "comical" - instant F. It's been coming for a long time and something needs to change there. It's bad enough to where I don't think it would be unreasonable to reconsider coaching positions related to WRs and maybe "clean house". Maybe we need additional coaches and assistant coaches there.
Beck… oh Beck. How can you possibly decide how well he did? I have no clue. It's not like he's not seeing the field well (don't recall many "the guy is wide open" plays) nor is it like he's over or underthrowing the passes. If we had the Top 2 or 3 WR in the country out there, Beck probably would've gotten an "A". As it is, I guess it's what your baseline is. Compared to Heisman level, sure C is appropriate. Compared to how Stockton would've played, maybe B or so.
I'm going to keep saying this. PLEASE start recruiting WRs. Bama has one of the Top 5 Receivers for 2025, Oregon has 2 and Texas has 2. WE HAVE ZERO. Our best is #9 and next after that is #44. Great Receivers turn Good QBs into Great QBs while poor ones cost you games.
