Netflix review: American Primeval
Just finished the 6-episode mini-series called American Primeval. It's set in 1857 Utah territory and follows a violent story line that includes the Morman struggle to maintain control of the Utah territory, US expansionism, and Native cultures fighting to hold on to their ancient lands. There is nothing sugar-coated or PC or political about this series. It's a realistic look at life on the frontier. A daily fight for survival in a world where nothing is convenient or safe. If you liked Revenant (which I loved), this is very much in that same vein. Many of the main characters are actual real people. Yes, there was a bloody war in Utah involving the Mormans, the US Army, frontiersmen, and natives. A round-robin of violence. Nobody is the good guy or the bad guy…well, except the Mormans come out looking pretty bad.
It's uber-violent, but not gory and gratuitous. It's just how it was. The hardships endured on the wild west frontier are things we simply can't comprehend. The moral code was a bit different for those people.
I am by no means an historian, but I have studied history enough to know that the US western frontier in the 1800s, particularly in the mountainous areas, was probably one of the most dangerous and difficult places to exist in history. If that sort of thing interests you, then I highly recommend it.

I liked it. It was well scripted and well acted IMO.
I am finished with episode four. Yep the Mormons looked bad. Bribed a band of Paiute Indians to join them in an attack on a Pioneer wagon train killing nearly everyone. Did everything they could to conceal their identity and make it look like an attack by a Paiute rival, the Shoshone.
👍 It was violent but agree it was not gratuitous. I thought it was one the better if not best new “westerns”. Did not know much about that period before.
Thought Taylor Kitsch from Friday night lights series played his character well and the lead actress Betty Gilpin did too.
Glad to see Taylor Kitsch get a chance to showcase his fine acting chops. I have read a lot of history of this period, the end of the mountain man era. However I have not done a lot of reading about the Mormons although I did know there was a lot of violent interaction between them and settlers and the US army. I also liked the portrayal of Jim Bridger and his outpost, it was a of pivotal importance in that time. Bridger was a larger than life persona whose importance to the opening of the West is frankly never been given his fair share of recognition. Overall I thought it was very well done.
I didn't realize that was Betty Gilpin till about half way through. I don't know how they made her look so rough because she is a stunningly beautiful woman. Wow!
Dang! Didn't realize that was Tim Riggins! I thought something was familiar about him.
I think that was why I sat down to watch it in the first place. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
yall know they are rebooting Friday night lights too?
Will it be a Taylor Sheridan production? I noticed watching Landman that it has the same feel, cinematography, and music soundtrack as the FNL TV show.
no it’ll be Pete Berg who did the original and American Primeval. There will be a whole new coach and I’m sure there will be some cameos from the first run.
Didn’t know that. Thanks for the good news. Will look forward to it
