Trekking The Way in Spain (Camino de Santiago)

Hi Dawg Fans,

I’m setting out this morning from Madrid to join some fellow walkers on the Way of St James. We’re trekking 115 kilometers from Tui to Santiago over the next week. This is known as the Camino de Santiago, a classic pilgrimage that’s been walked for over 1000 years.

I’m proudly wearing the “G” on my jacket! Appreciate prayers and good thoughts for health and strength along the way.

One of my retired friends at church did that last year. He had nothing but great things to say about the experience. Just like watching the Dawgs—work hard to avoid injuries; it can mess up the whole season. Enjoy.

Yes, it’s called “Walking with Sam.”

I can recommend the 2010 film “The Way” starring Martin Sheen. His son directed it and a sequel is forthcoming.

Finished day 2 - 21km, 7.5 hours, 27,000 steps. Feeling pretty good; taking it slow and steady.

Good for you man. Just thinking about 27,000 steps makes my feet hurt.

About 2k per mile so 27,000 = 13.5 miles.

Finished day 3. Long but beautiful rambling hike. 27 kilometres, 9.5 hours and 35,000 steps!

Tomorrow we have a short 5.5 mile steep climb up to a monastery, then a day of needed rest before continuing. We are on the Porto (Portuguese) route and taking the “spiritual variant” option which includes a boat ride across the bay on day 8!

Day 4 complete! Only a 5.5 mile uphill climb to a monastery. Glutes were sore at end but no blisters on my feet. Tomorrow is a much needed rest day!
