Really surprised no mention of schedule impacting performance... and 2025 looks to be brutal as well 🫤
At some point, all these SEC teams beating the #$&+ out of each other for months then facing CFP opponents who had far lesser SoS (much less strength of opposing players!) is going to grind on the universities in the conference as well as the fan bases. I think back to how hard Brock and Ladd killed themselves (not to mention others) when massively injured in '23 and wonder what might have been had we had mostly ACC or BIG10 opponents that year and in '24.
I think most teams, if given the chance to play the top five of the BIG10 after OSU (Mich, PSU, Indiana, and...?) or the top of the SEC after UGA (Bama, LSU, Ol' Miss, UT-East, and UT-West) would choose the BIG10 slate. Heck, in '24, A&M, Florida, and USC were no slouches either.
At some point, if the CFP is to really matter and be legit, more x-conference play may be called for 🤔
What about Dom, Tuggle, London, Oscar, Lawson, Ben and Arian…..a QB leader with his head straight would have done just fine…..not to mention Cash, Nate and Etienne out of the backfield???
all I see is a list of names of pass catchers who dropped a ton of passes. None of those guys are WR1 types. Some aren’t even WR2 types. Oscar Delp was awful at blocking last year.
Guess we'll just disagree….in my experience, a great QB will make a mediocre receiver look great by knowing the right time to throw by correctly reading defences, knowing the correct touch to place on the throw, and by placing the ball exactly where the catch can be made and not intercepted……last year CB was not a great QB..he rushed passes, held the ball too long only to fail to throw the ball away but tried to squeeze it in throwing it high or to far ahead or behind receivers….CB certainly possess the skill to be great…..2023 was great…..he'll be good enough in Miami to rack up stats to get drafted in the 3rd or 4th round.
so it was Carson’s fault for all those drops?
I was pointing out that all/most of the "blame" for '24 does not fall on CBeck regardless of any perceived "leadership" deficiencies annunciated by fans here. Fans seem to want to blame CBeck for '24 because he "deserted" UGA for Mia.
I am not sure that Rara or CYoung are/were better than DBell or even ASmith (drafted 4th rd). Smith had a decent year w/over 800 yards (17 ypc) receiving. If he doesn't drop any passes he might be over 1000 yards. Even w/Bell's drops his '24 season was comparable statistically to Young's best season at Mia.
UGA's WR "problems" were due mainly to guys not catching the ball at critical times and its collection of WR3's. Skill wise, UGA's WR's were all WR3 level. Compare to OSU ($$$) who had 4 WR1's. One must wonder what CBeck would've looked like playing for OSU last season.
well it’s tricky comparing Young’s Miami stats to what he would’ve done in Athens. It seemed clear he and Beck developed a connection in the short time they worked together. Young also represented a type of WR we didn’t have after he went down…big body throw it up and get it. For whatever reason Delp and Luckie couldn’t fill the void.
Rara Thomas also seemed to have that trust from Carson to be where he was supposed to be to make plays that he didn’t have with Arian.
I think (for once) we mostly agree on this issue.
A couple of comments on your points/observations. We don't know what Young would've done last year. I think he would've helped. Only because all (not just ASmith and Bell) the other WR's were dropping passes and generally failed to make big plays at critical times. Not all on the WR's.
To project Young's success in the SEC based on his success in a weak ACC is questionable. He is a big body. BUT "throw it up and get it" is what he failed to do vs AL in his 1 big chance to do that in '24. Could he improve? Absolutely. We will all find out this season. To me Young is bigger but very similar to all the WR's UGA has had over the last few years that have had trouble gaining separation. I get it. Not his game and thankfully UGA has Branch for that role ( and ASmith last year) this season. But I don't expect him to be getting much separation from SEC CB's in'25. That may limit his opportunities and stat's.
As for Rara he made a couple of nice catches (before suspension) but had trouble getting on the field and more trouble with consistency (while at UGA). Another interesting case to see what he does elsewhere. I wonder if he will have any pro career to speak of.
As for Delp and Luckie. There is no way around it. Delp was a disappointment in '24. He did seem to come on late. Maybe that can carry over. Delp will always fail the eye test after watching Bowers play the position for 3 years. I believe he will either step up this season or lose snaps to a deep and talented TE room.
I also expected more from Luckie in '24. He was the "receiving" TE. A role he seems very qualified to fill. Had an okay year statistically. Just expected more (some?) big plays from the TE position after seeing what Bowers could do there. Is that on Luckie, Beck or Bobo? I think I'd start with Bobo.
re: Delp…rumor was he and Beck were like oil and water and he and Stockton are very close. It’s his $ year so he will have to step up his blocking if he hopes to play at the next level.
Both he and Luckie will have to step it up because there are some Clydesdales behind them who can take their spot easily.
Last year Bobo was not very good overall. Had moments against Miss State and Tennessee but the ND game was an abomination. Kirby said they need more talent (which I agree with to an extent) and they got it. No more excuses for Mike in 2025. Carson Beck isn’t here any longer for the fanbase to blame. Mike has his handpicked QB for 2 seasons (likely), two big catch radius WRs, an unguardable slot WR in Branch, and fresh talent at OL.
If we aren’t averaging 38-41 ppg this year that will be on Bobo.
