Depends on the quarterback, throwing to em. Bennett was good at it [imo]…and, best i can remember....Aaron Murray was pretty good at the redzone/endzone pass. But, Murray was a master of the back-shoulder throw, which he used most of the time.
And, it seems like I remember the announcers giving props to Beck for the ability to hit the TE on a high-point, just below the goalposts crossbar. Which they said, is hard to do and risky.
Actually...thinking back....the Dawgs haven't really, needed to depend on the pass, in the red zone, for the most part. Okay...If somebody sacrificed a defender or two to "stop the run".…maybe then the Dawgs are "forced to pass".
Lol....but, I still remember Bennett, weaving his way through the secondary, to score a needed TD, on Tennessee...and, again on GT. When the Dawgs "needed" to pass.
I also remember Bennett hitting Washington on a high-point throw in the endzone. Great throw and catch...but, they still lost the game.
IMO....Having a tall receiver to hit on a high point in the endzone, is only a very small, "nice to have, but not necessary" tool in the drawer. Especially, if you don't have a lot of tools. Lol....UGA is loaded with finely crafted stainless steel tools.
Anyody else worried about this year's recruiting other than me?
a time honored tradition unlike any other…UGA fans panicking about recruiting in June and yet we wind up with another top 5 class
The bigger story here is UGA getting priced out of the highest ranked prospects. Not that big a deal here because of the talent already committed to UGA at TE and the prospect of getting Prothro. Not saying being financially prudent isn't the smart way to go. Just that teams throwing money around are 1) getting ahead and 2) taking prospects that Saban or UGA would have taken before NIL. No more stacking 5* and high 4* players.
What is a big deal, as an example, is UGA losing out on the #1 OT prospect and now relegated to recruiting the #27 or #45 OT. That is a trend worth watching.
IF UGA misses the playoffs this season it is definitely time to start worrying about the downward trend in UGA successfully recruiting elite prospects. On the right side CFB IS moving closer to setting up some rules for NIL that will attempt to level the playing field.
Its also associated with a thing called puberty..
You're right about the "getting outbid" part...cause, the Dawgs don't NEED to buy talent. Yet, anyway. Lol. They cultivate it...by enhancing use of the brain in coordination with the body. The brain is just as important as the body...if not more important...imo.
IMO...Any halfway talented kid, with a high pain tolerance and a history of consistent and sustained superior performance in all areas of his life...can be a great athlete and play for UGA.
Being "rated #1" by some unknown and unaccountable sources...is arbitrary, imo. There's not a whole lot, separating the #1 OT from the #100 OT. The rated 100....may be better, but has only played the game a few years. And, is nowhere near as far along in "development" as the so-called #1 OT.
We'll see in a few years, how all those ratings pan out. Lol. I'll go ahead and go out on a limb here...and say, "I will guarantee their inaccuracy". I just can't say with any degree of certainty...where those inaccuracies lie.
The way I see it, Kirby has proven to be one helluva talent scout himself. He doesn't need some faceless 3rd party, telling him which players will yield results and which, will be a cancer on the Program.
If UGA "really wanted" either of the two guys, in question....UGA would have those two guys. Lol. That's just my opinion.
@UGADad20 .…I just wonder what's gonna happen to all those big contracts...once a cap is put on player compensation? Do they just go away?
we buy talent just like everyone else. Jared Curtis says hi.
Obviously UGA engages in the same player purchase program everybody else is engaged in.
My words were....UGA doesn't "HAVE TO" buy talent. And they don't. They don't have to go "outbid" anybody.
Fyi....i'll bet Curtis left a lot of money on the table, to sign with UGA. Cause...that's the smart play. The idea being...Get UGA to put as much money on the table as the top 2 or 3 bidders, through negotiation. After that, there's not a lot of space between those top bids.
The Dawgs have the resources to stay within the top 2 or 3 bids for any target player.
By "Intentionally",...not submitting "the top bid" puts the "decision" on.the player, his Parents & his representatives. We know which direction the Reps will take...but, the parents [family] are another story.
IMO....For a player to be "bought-in"....his support group must be "bought-in" as well...[or at least supportive]. Else you could find your 4 or 5 star investment headed to the TP next year.
Unfortunately, a player's close family and high school support system sometimes have their own agenda. That's the part of "The process" nobody gets to see...and, it's different for every player. When you throw big money into the process....the worst in people, tends to come out.
Bottom line is....you want the Player to make the decision, with everybody in support. And, money should not be the driving force. If you can't have that....why bother recruiting the guy?. To train him up, for another school to employ him, in a year or two. Forget it!
The decision is relatively simple for any Smart player looking to play pro ball....and, as far as i'm concerned UGA has always been a top choice.
But, with Kirby running things the way he has been....since he started coaching...the choice is obvious. If it's about football. If your focus is money....Kirby can't help you....and, you are probably as good as you ever will be.
We all know, that Kirby will give any kid he coaches...110% of himself. How much is the Player willing to give?. It's all about relationships and talent.
IMO....Money is out of place in the amateur environment. This whole TP/NIL thing is gonna get turned on it's head with a year or two. What happens to all these big contracts, then? They will be unenforceable.
don’t have to and choosing not to are two different concepts. We are one of the top spending teams in college football. Guys like Marvin Jones Jr, Damon Wilson, and KJ Bolden don’t initially come here unless we are outbidding someone.
