you got the old heads in their feels haha
Not disagreeing, but the name Bo Jackson immediately came to mind. Just as big as Herschel, just as fast, and also very agile himself. Herschel was the better RB no doubt, but much as i hate to say this about any player from auburnt..Jackson was the better overall athlete between the 2, just my opinion though. If not for injuries cutting his career short, Jackson would've been a top player not only in the NFL, but MLB also, depending on which path he chose to pursue. In my opinion, he was a better baseball player than he was a football player. And he was pretty good at toting the rock.I would NEVER leave Herschel off any list, not 1 (unless its a defensive list lol) when it comes to the greatest college players of all time. He was simply that good at what he did, even sacrificing his own body at times for the team. I vividly remember the Sugar Bowl injury like it happed last Saturday. His shoulder was dislocated on the 2nd play of the game after a tackle, being the team player he was, he toughed it out for the rest of the game, and still put on a show running the ball.
Herschel Walker was the fastest running back in football...college or pro, when he hit the field in '80, '81 & '82. That's not an opinion….just a fact. He was an Olympian with world class speed and strength.
Running side by side with Bo Jackson, George Rogers or any of the other guys you want to add to the list.....and, Herschel Walker would've smoked em in 1980. Now...THAT is an opinion. But, an educated opinion. Lol
Yes...Trippi played both ways. Most guys did, back then. My former HS HC and a former UGA RB, used to talk about Trippi all the time. He played ball with him at UGA in '45-'46 and caught a TD pass from Trippi in the Sugar Bowl.
He said that Trippi was the best "ball player", he had ever seen. To me...that was saying alot, considering the players that, that particular HC had been around. Lol
I like having these discussions, cause, they're fun. But, orher than Herschel....it's really hard to boil UGA's former running backs down to just 3 or 4. Somebody great and just as deserving…is bound to get left off of that list. For instance…nobody even mentioned Knowshon Moreno or Willie McClendon.
I prefer to break it down into Eras. Sinkwich & Trippi in the 40's, Tarkenton & Zeke Bratkowski in the '50's…and so on. Just seems to be more equitable, that way....considering changes in rules, recruiting, cultural issues, etc..
Obviously.....CFB in 1950 was different than CFB in 1980....which is different than CFB in the '90's and 2000's. And even that...is different than what we have today.
Not many running backs in today's game...are even capable of sustaining excellence while carrying the ball 30 or 40 times per game....much less playing on both sides of the ball. Bowers could've done it....and so could Travis Hunter....IMO. I'm sure there are others.
Olympian in the bobsled yes, but not in Olympic sprint events..thats a fact also lol
You're right, of course....he didn't compete in the '84 Olympics, as a sprinter....though, he could've qualified.
I don't remember exactly what happened to his '84 Olympics goal. Time plays tricks with your memory, once you get to be my age. Lol
He was a 3 time All American Track & Field Star...as well as a football player....in HS & College. He competed in a few of events....the 100 yd dash & Shot Put were his specialties.
Think about that, a minute. Olympic Speed…and Zonka Power..with Laser Focus. That's what Walker was. He was a Unicorn. Lol.
I know Herschel had talked about doing what Bruce Jenner did in the decathlon, at one time. I'm pretty sure, signing that USFL contract, put the kibosh on all those original Olympic plans, though I can't remember. Lol.
I think he always regretted signing that USFL Contract...mainly, because....at the time, Professionals were barred from competing in the Olympics. He tried unsuccessfully to get out of it, once the full impact became apparent to him. Guys didn't have sports agents and lawyers to advise em, back then.
It wasn't till the Dream Team days, that the rule changed. Which allowed him to find an event he could compete in, with a reasonable chance of WINNING. Cause, he wasn't a sprinter anymore, in '92.
Herschel paid a heavy price for signing that deal with the devil, in '83. Give him a break.
Incidentally....don't you think it's kind of ironic that the "protectors" of Amateurism, when given the opportunity.…greedily opened the door, to allow the devil greater access to young impressionable souls. And, the media got right behind em, full force.
Who's gonna protect the kids from "the protectors"?. That's my question. It's obvious who the media works for. Who's minding the store, now?. Lol
We need a new set of "Mission Statements" from everybody, to know the purpose of a University having any kind of athletic program that requires paying students? Lmao....who's teaching who, what, exactly?.
