Well. If it's really about getting the best teams*, there's no reason to be going all the way out to 12 in the first place. Even putting aside the G5 Cinderellas, does anyone honestly believe that Bama, Oregon, A&M, Miami or Oklahoma legitimately might be the best team in the country? They're good teams that have had good seasons, but if the point is to make sure we get only the best teams playing for the championship, then there's going to be a lot of fluff in a 12-team field every year. 6 seems about right, without any of this automatic bid nonsense. And most years, even that would probably be too many, but it would at least provide a buffer against the BS we were served in 2023 (as one example). So it would strike a good balance in promoting fairness without letting it get out of hand like it has. Once you go beyond that, you're really just talking about filler, or at best, which teams might have the best chance to "get hot" at the right time - not exactly consistent with the mission of ensuring that the playoff field is limited to the best teams.
But other than that, I agree. I've been saying for years that the G5 should have their own championship. Give it a more respectable name - make them their own subdivision if need be - but separate them out once and for all and let's be done with this farcical idea that they need to be included in the postseason with actual contenders.
*Just to make sure my argument is clear, I'm defining "best teams" as those who have shown throughout the season that they have a real case as being the best team in the country. If that's not the objective in selecting teams for a playoff, then I don't know what we're even talking about. Most years, there are no more than 3 or 4 such teams. I'll concede that it can be subjective, but I have yet to see a season where the line couldn't be drawn somewhere in the top 6.
Haha good one.
Edit: Ugh. Responding to stiffneck. The quoted comment didn't appear. Second time today is done that to me. This site is becoming a mess.
Imo....the 12-Team CFP replaced the old "Bowl System". A dinosaur on it's last legs....fighting for survival in a game that's passed em by.
Most of the teams in the playoff, would've been the invitees of old...to Bowls like The Orange, Sugar, Cotton and Rose....among others.
The biggest difference is....the games are better. More competitive and meaningful. Teams that WERE out of it, are still in the conversation.
Lol....They're selling "Hope" to millions of Fans, that were once left out. Cause, the usual suspects that have always been a cut above....they, still own the Natty and always will. But, it doesn't feel that way anymore.
Perception is 9/10ths of reality. Lol....change the perception and "make more money". That's their philosophy....imo. Put a better product on Television.…to sell more "food". Lmao
@E_Roc
I agree with you regarding a G5 Natty. The winner of that tournament can take the 13th Seed in the SEC tournament.
You know....be a standby, in case one of the other teams has to forfeit. Then, they could claim to be the "Best of the Rest". Lol
