The biggest winners in the transfer portal this season - LSU, Indiana, Miami, Ok State, Texas - relied on getting experienced players rather than guys with stars who hadn't played much or if at all elsewhere. That's no different when it comes to the QBs. Just look at the National Championship teams from Michigan (McCarthy), Ohio State (Howard), and Indiana (Mendoza). Key elite playmakers on offense surrounded these experienced QBs. Experience wins over talent.
Georgia already has a proven commodity in Stockton. No reason to go in the portal for another QB. But what the Dawgs don't have are proven elite key playmakers around him.
Will it be enough to truly compete for another Championship??
I like UGA’s model, who knows how long it’ll last could be sustain. If we keep getting 4/5 * QBs and they sit and transfer, I would go for highly rated 3* QBs.
example: Gunner starts, Pugs is next. Monty leaves, Jayden Wade comes in. Jayden sits and then starts for 2-3 years. No 4/5* will want to sit behind him, so recruit 3*, keep going for higher ones, develop the 3*, and if you land a 5*, let them battle it out for starting position.
Simple answer - they have great QB's ready to step up. I honestly think Colter Ginn could play a role. I think they were worried he would go somewhere, so they gave him a scholarship. I never bought into the five star hype, especially at QB. Too many have been 3 or 4 stars that go on to greatness.
Just because Mike Bobo said that Gunner has not hit his ceiling does not mean he is a proven commodity. He has a lot to get right if he is going to win a Natty. I am certainly not saying that he will not improve, but he has got to stay in the pocket and make plays when they are there, and there were plenty to be made this past season when he had ample protection and just did not see his best options. UGA did not go after a starting QB because #1, there were no better options to be had, and even if there were Kirby would not be willing to give a player the kind of money it would take to get him. I do NOT blame him for that at all. The defense is where this team starts, the players are there, but I think Kirby will have to put in the hours to get the defense to be lights out on game one, not game ten. Kirby had to step in in 2025 to get the defense up to speed. Schumann has shown that he can't get it done by himself. That is why it hurts so much to lose Boom to the shorthorns. Four out of the first five games are in Athens, and are very manageable. I would think that by the time the Dawgs have to travel to play Bama that Gunner will have played enough to be on a pretty good roll. I also think that the new receiving corps and highly rated tight ends on the roster will be playing at a high level by then. Dawgs are in as good or better shape as anyone.
It’s because no one wants to come play in Bobo’s offense which isn’t up to par with other programs, imagine coming to play for him and suddenly you become the reason Georgia can’t win and the fans continuously blame you for not winning it all. Sound familiar??
I don’t think it’s some philosophical decision or for the lack of trying. We went after Maiva as mentioned in the article and tried to get Mendoza before last season.
Bobo’s system allows a QB to develop as much as any college system. Kirby often talks about how much they put on the QB and that gives him a chance to develop. Over the past three years, the Dawgs are 36-6, so they’ve done plenty of winning in Bobo’s offense.
It's called "complimentary football" - or game planning…and the OC doesn't get every call he wants. That all starts from the top, heck I am okay with it all - the last I looked, it has been working.
Pretty sure that the Dawgs are still the winningest CF program the last 5 years. Bobo knows what he is doing.
Just pointing to the scoreboard at the end of the day is good enough for me. Rather look bad and win than look good and lose.
Some fans will probably dust this off and say Oh Well, So What ? But Ginn took his HS team to the State Championship and Won it Speaking for Me it says he’s a pretty darn good QB !!
These HS kids are vastly bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than players back in my time in HS in the early 70s !! Before someone from my era gets offended that’s Not a knock on players of that day and age. It’s just that players in HS these days have Far better Strength & Conditioning equipment and coaches. Many schools even have sports dieticians helping manage their diet. They have state of the art technology to help guide them to peak performance.
Back in the old days if you had fairly decent size, fairly decent strength, was tough and willing to play hard. Those were all that were required. So please don’t get me wrong those were tough and willing young men also add in loyal and courageous as well.
But we’ve all seen these kids coming out of HS back in the day they would be considered freaks of nature !! Now they are the norm.
I’m not in depth knowledgeable about but Ginn. But all I’ve heard is good and no bad. I’m Glad he’s a Dawg !!
You can never have enough QBs. I remember Dawgs played Bama before Saban. Knocked both the #1 and #2 QBs completely out of the game. And injured the #3 QB but fortunately for Bama he was able to stay in but in great pain. Dawgs won that game by a very solid score. I think it was only a couple of years before Saban. Does anyone happen to remember that game ? My memory is crap !! So frustrating !!
What the heck does "one of the better" mean? Cream of the crud? Almost one of the best? One of the better is like kissing your sister. It sure does leave a lot of room for criticism and opens the discussion if one of our other options is better.
I’m fine with the train of thought about developing QB’s the way Kirby and Bobo are doing. What’s concerning to me is we have let some very experienced offensive linemen go elsewhere in the portal. We all know it starts up front with the “road graders” and we could also add in wide receivers. I would like to see Kirby use the portal more for the offense so our QB’s aren’t running for their lives and receivers getting better separation. Hopefully the change in offensive line coaches will help some in this area. Go Dawgs!
WARNING A Bit OFF Topic But Not Much !! After all QBs have to have people to throw to. I’m not a Coach, not an Expert, just a fan who Loves the Dawgs !!
Myself and a couple of other Dawgs fans mentioned this on another thread. Being as how the TE room is Loaded. I’d Love to see Kirby and Bobo move Prothro to WR !! I think if my poor memory serves Connor mentioned that in his article on that thread.
I could be very wrong and it sure wouldn’t be the first time. But Prothro has that “IT” factor coaches covet. Young man has excellent size, pretty decent speed for his size and excellent hands. With UGA’s strength & conditioning and proper coaching I predict he’s gonna be a star !!
Of course ALL of it is based on His total buy in to work his butt off in the weight room and soak up coaching. So it all starts and ends with his Want To. I don’t know him personally but Jeff Sentell published some quotes from him and in those quotes Prothro showed excellent attitude. Now if only he’ll Do what he Says.
Do those things I referenced and show up Big in practice and he Might get on the field This year. But probably Not as a TE as that room has plenty of talented and Experienced guys in front of him.
I sure Hope I’m right about him as IF I am this young man could be a Real game changer for the Dawgs. Shades of Brock Bowers !! As we all know Brock devoured the weight room and practices and said give me More, More Please !!
So he took his already Awesome natural talents and built them to Super Elite. Prothro will need to adopt that same mentality. If he does Watch Out Dawgs Fans !! Really it’ll be Watch Out Rival Teams cause a ton of trouble is headed your way !! I Hope I’m right for Prothro, the Dawgs, and we the fans !! Go Dawgs !!
To continue my previous post. Kaiden Prothro is 6’6” weighs in at 210. Could probably use a little more Muscular meat on his bones. Here’s what 247 Sports had to say about him:
-Matchup nightmare that will carry the tag of a tight end because of the physical features, but is likely to emerge as more of a target-commanding boundary receiver in college with his ball skills and catch radius.
-Exits high school as the Peach State’s all-time leader in touchdown catches (66) after a dominant prep career in which he caught over 150 passes.
-Towers over defenders with a frame that has been verified at over 6-foot-6 and is equipped with large 10-inch hands.
-Frequently turns 50-50 balls into 80-20 propositions with his high-pointing ability and spatial awareness.
-Displays impressive adjustment speed on vertical shots and can reel in the long ball like few others with his extension.
-Motivated after the catch and is quick to build steam with his gangly stride as he looks to shed tackles and move the sticks.
-Will need some time in the lab before he’s ready to handle in-line blocking duties, but should be viewed as a versatile offensive weapon that can be positioned right away out wide, in the slot or in the wing.
-Projects as a potential impact player for a College Football Playoff hopeful and a likely early-round NFL Draft pick.
EVALUATED 06/06/2025
P.S. That sounds Very exciting to me !! Prothro had 80 yds. Receiving to help his Bowdon Red Devils defeat a stingy Lincoln County Defense to win the State Championship !!
I suspect before too long schools will realize that investing big NIL money into getting a Freshman QB who will sit on the bench and transfer the next year is foolish. I wouldn't be surprised if those deals go away or there are tiered payments based on how long you stay. Players like Branch were worth every penny and those types of positions that are more consistent across college football make much more sense to invest and get someone who can start game #1.
