RIP Bobby Cox
Bobby Cox has gone to GOD RIP. His tenure was the golden years of Atlanta Braves baseball. My father knew him slightly as they had met in the grocery store and would talk whenever they were at the time. My Dad said they never talked about baseball though just family and other things. 😎
Bobby Cox did what many attempt but few accomplish. Take a professional sports franchise that is a laughingstock and turn it into a perennial winner.
That is what Bobby Cox did with the Braves. Two distinct franchises really. Pre 1991 and post 1991. And it all boiled down to Ted Turner, who also recently passed, hiring Bobby back to be the GM after the 1985 season. Ted famously said after he fired Bobby in 1981 as manager he wanted the next guy to be just like Bobby Cox.
Cox overhauled the entire thing in 1986 from the lowest Farm team on up. Took a few years for it to show up. But it did in 1991 and the team has been a winner ever since.
Rest in peace Coach Cox. 🙏🏼
Braves win their 27th over those hated Dodgers 7-2! A fitting homage to the Skipper! He will be sorely missed….

Braves have clinched a 5-4 trip and can get it to 6-3 with a win tomorrow.
Win. Especially considering this is the longest hardest West Coast run of the year.
Cubs might be tough coming back home but after that I think the schedule opens up for the Braves. Which means they can go back to winning series after series rolling along. This team might have some legs.
7-2 win for the Bravos. Win the series and finish the trip at 6-3 including 2 very tough teams. Elder was unbelievable until he lost his control in the 6th and walked the bases full. Incredible running catch by Eli White to end the threat when he jumped and crashed into the fence at full speed. Hope he is OK. They took him out as a precaution, I think. Just about everyone in the lineup got a hit and contributed. Real team victory. Off day tomorrow. I'm sure they can use it.
The new guys on the team, supposed backups, have been playing great. Dubon, Mateo and Eli White have played like they should be starting. Great pickups. Dom Smith continues to hit the ball hard, either is a DH or a PH. These guys are great. What a team.
Agreed about the Cubs…..we actually play them twice this month, here and there. But they are limping in after being shutout their last two games…..catching them at the right time, hopefully!
Strider and Elder sure did their job! And the pitcher for the Dodgers that we beat today had a record coming in at 5-0!

Doesn't get mentioned with the Braves sometimes because they also have power but they have really good team speed.
You've got the slow guys Olson and Riley. DH Smith is slow.
After that though you have some guys with elite speed. Eli White and Mateo can really fly. Id like to see those guys race. Saw something where White has the 5th fastest time to 1b in the NL and that is from the right side. Guys like Acuna and Harris when healthy are maybe just a couple hairs below that.
After that there is a pool of players who have above average to very good speed. Albies, Dubon, Yaz. Baldwin runs way better than most catchers.
Not really a lot of stolen bases but no need to force things as well as they are playing. Just keep doing what you are doing. Where it does show up on the bases is after an xtra base hit with multiple guys on. Mateo and White will almost always score from 1st on a Double.
Also means you are getting to a lot more balls in the OF. As White showed today. Eli in LF Harris in CF and Acuna in RF gives you an extremely fast OF.
AA really put together a good team this year and Weiss seems to know exactly what to do with it.

@donniem Yeah, I saw the replay of White's catch and collision with the wall. Fortunately, the Dodgers have it covered with foam. Probably some high-tech stuff that can reduce the possibility of injury when there's a collision like White's. Hopefully.
And that Dodger's hitter was so mad that White made the catch on his ball.
