Your post reminded me of the scoop he made at first too a few days ago.
We really should appreciate Olson more.
His situation is not typical. Comes to ATL and though he is from the area he has the unfortunate duty of replacing a Braves legend Freddie Freeman. I'll admit I was very against this from the start. How do you let Freddie walk after winning the WS?
Olson handled it with nothing but class from the beginning. He didnt try to be Freddie Freeman instead focusing on being the best Matt Olson he could be. Its worked.
All he has done in the 4-5 years since he replaced Freddie is perform. Hits for power and probably the best defensive 1b in the game. Oh and he never misses a game. Not ever. Has made every single start over that time.
I love his approach at the plate. He does not give away at bats. Rarely chases pitches out of the zone. He makes the pitcher come to him and then he is ready to pounce.
Plus I think he is just a really intelligent guy. Hearing him talk in after game interviews you can tell. Probably the guy on the Braves I would most want to have a few beers with.
Olson is a great player who will be in the HOF someday.
Rough night for Connor Thomas. In 2.2 innings of work, 10 hits 5 bb's, and 11 earned runs including 3 hr's. ERA stands at 21.32
Mets cruise 14-3.
At least the Fish came back in the 9th and shocked the Phillies.
A night to forget, for sure. Ronald is back and got a hit, but also two Ks. Riley was his usual abysmal self with an 0fer and 2 more Ks. He may be leading the league in strikeouts.
For the Meh(ts) it was BP. They got 16 hits. Other than Ronald's hit in his first AB, the other highlight for the Braves was Mateo's strikeout as a relief pitcher.
Is Walt even considering benching Riley for a minute? We are batting with only 8 players when he is in there.
Legit concern. His defense has been better than average, but the offensive is abysmal.
His glove is fine. It's so frustrating waiting for him to get going. His constant messing with his batting gloves after every pitch, even if he doesn't swing at the last pitch is annoying. His blowing a bubble with his gum after a strikeout makes me….well, let's just say crazier…
I'm sure I could tolerate these habits better if he were actually hitting. There have been several games where he seemed ready to "turn the corner" but they are far too far apart.
Yeah they did!!!! 😅
Was a week or a few days ago I posted something like Riley showing signs of life. I think he had a couple hits that night (Singles) and one of the announcers mentioned his hard hit rate after the break was in the Top 5 or something like that.
Seemed to me like maybe he was trending in the right direction.
But Im with you Donnie. Im not sure it's going to happen. Harris struggled for an extended period and is now one of the teams best hitters. I think everyone is hoping Riley has a similar turnaround but the reality is the turnaround Harris accomplished is not common.
Usually when guys lose it for a while it doesn't come back.
Rainout.
Let's play two tomorrow. Looks like AJ Smith-Shawver will get one of those starts. Would really help the Braves if he can fill a spot.
Fingers crossed for AJ. If he returns to form. could be a BIG help.
Actually he's been better mostly since the all-star break. Hoping for similar rebound to last year's Harris.
Braves drop a 3-2 decision in the opener of a double bill. Good start by AJ. First 4 innings went really well. Bottom of the 5th he seemed to lose his command a bit - walked a guy and then was pretty much up with his pitches and was pulled after giving up 2 runs. I'd rate it a very promising start for the kid.
Except for Olson's 2-run homer, not much offense in the first game.
Sad to report, the game ended with Mateo on 2nd and Riley struck out for the 3rd time in the game. The # 5 thru #9 batters had only 2 hits the whole game - both by Eli White.
Weiss moved Riley down to 8th in the order. He might consider moving him down 2 more slots, bypassing #9 and going straight to the bench. He just seems lost up there.
Hope this game is a spring board for AJ. He looked really good out there for the first 4 innings.
Another nail biter. Braves win 1-0. Chris Sale was dominant. 2 hits and 9Ks in 6 innings. Bullpen was perfect - gave up absolutely nothing. Austin Riley broke out of his slump by getting on with a HBP. Brave bats were relatively silent this series - hapless Mets got some good pitching from their guys.
Braves pitching, with the one exception, was pretty good too. Hope that's an omen.
Loving the hate on Riley Donnie.

Good line.
He has earned it. It's nothing personal but at this point he just isn't getting the job done.
Sale is something. I dont follow all of MLB like I did in the past. Sale pitched in the AL before Atlanta. Didnt really appreciate how great he is until he got here.
Phillies lost again. Lead up to 6.5. All of a sudden the inevitable seems evitable.
Sale did something tonight you used to hear Bobby Cox talk about.
Great starting pitcher can stop a losing streak.
