In Game 5, Livan Hernandez struck out 15 Braves batters in a complete game. That stands as Hernandez’s career-high. The runner-up: 11 strikeouts, in July 2001. Hernandez has done that once. He’s struck out ten batters in a game twice. Hernandez has started many hundreds of games.
So you can see Gregg's strike zone that day helped Hernandez quite a bit.
The other starter in Game 5 was Greg Maddux, and he struck out nine batters in seven innings. That was well above his regular-season rate. But 29% of his strikes were called, against a season rate of 28%. It’s not a great measure, but that hints at a more favorable strike zone for Hernandez.
Not as much for Maddux.

Harper called out Dombrowski to make a move at the upcoming trade deadline, directly stating that the Phillies need help. The jab got skipper Don Mattingly involved, as he defended Dombrowski and dissuaded Harper from trying to act like the GM.
On the heels of an embarrassing sweep to the Marlins to start the week, the Phillies now find themselves with a 3-9 record following the All-Star break, dropping their record to 57-52. This latest scuffle between Harper and Dombrowski could not have come at a worse time.
Unfortunately for Phillies fans, the uneasy vibes between the team’s star player and their general manager will be here to stay a little longer.
This game forever in my memory. I was furious from the beginning because he was purposely putting the squeeze on Maddox and I also remember telling others with me how the descrepency between calling for both teams oppositely was by far what made it so painful to watch. I saw it live and still to this day can't believe MLB didn't step in publicly & do something. Maybe if the Yankees or Dodgers have been the team getting jobbed, they might have done so.
Imo the Braves were the clear best team but weren't allowed a fair shot. Oh well.
Nice quality start by Elder last night, against a good hitting lineup. Reading the Braves website this AM and discovered he has a fWAR of 2.9. which is tied for 29th in baseball (with Zach Wheeler and Mason Miller). I thought, is that good or bad. Those are two pretty darn good pitchers that he is tied with. I wondered what is fWAR? We recently learned that Mickey Mantle had a WAR of about 7. But this is fWAR.

I don't know how many of these kinds of stats AA uses, but any time "estimates" are used, I get a little bit of uncertainty. Using other analytics as factors in figuring out another analytic seems to take it farther off into….
I'll stick with HR, BA, RBIs (yes, plural), ERA, wins, losses…and I'll never be a GM, that is for sure.
The stat I look at the most Donnie is ERA+ and OPS+.
OPS is a simple stat that is better than say just BA. BA doesnt take into account walks or if you got a single or a double. But OPS does. Guys with high OPS are your best offensive players.
OPS+ is basically everyone in the leagues OPS converted into a simple number where 100 is the average. A few sample from this years team
Olson 136
Baldwin 131
Riley 76
The above means Olson has been as good as the average guy in OPS + 36 percent. Riley is 24 percent worse than an average guy.
You can spot the guys having good years: Olson, Baldwin and the ones having bad ones Riley in a glance.
Why do I prefer OPS to BA? Ill let Mickey Mantle explain……

Supposedly Mickey said that. Forget the dress part the real point is a homer is worth more than a single. Batting average considers both those hits the same while OPS values the thing that is more valuable.

Thanks. I didn't take negatively. In fact, OPS is something I understand - it makes sense to me and I like the Braves site because they post it at bat by at bat. It makes good sense. Your explanation of OPS+ makes sense to me, too. I haven't seen that before.
I will check out ERA+. If it is figured similarly to OPS+, I'll likely pay attention to it.
Some of these advance stats just seem too esoteric to me and involve "estimates". I guess I'm not that big a fan of estimates.

I just looked up ERA+ and found ERA- too. I liked ERA- a bit more. there are some amazing advanced stats out there.
The OPS tells me what I need to know. OPS + just cheats and averages the league making it easy to see where you stand.
I can look at any MLB team on Baseball Reference for 5 minutes and I can immediately tell you a lot about them just looking at OPS+ and ERA+. Even if I haven't seen them play a game all year.
I like Jarvis. He got on base 4 times last night I don't think Kim got on 4 times in a month.
But…..you cant make this many errors in the field at SS . That kind of thing will get you beat in a big game.
