I'm not arguing with you but we certainly have come a long way when a guy with these numbers is just "meh"...
I just don't think he fits our system as a WDE, as someone else stated, our OLBs are his size, and I don't really like him for that position over guys we already have on campus (who may never see the field). I agree though, 6 years ago we would all be super happy with a guy like Grimes. All hail King Kirbs
This may be... or probably is.....much ado about nothing. Can't imagine someone flips to UGA without visiting.
But lets assume there is something to it......I'd be careful about saying meh.
He may or may not turn out to be a player.....but Kirby can certainly find a spot for a 6'3" 240lb athlete.
Again......I'm certainly not suggesting he's a can't miss prospect......no such thing as a can't miss prospect.
But there is certainly a great chance that he is anything but "meh".
Although I've done my share of yelling at the tv on which plays to call, or not call, I still put my faith in Kirby that he knows what's best for the team more than we do....we shall see.
Sic em
He fits the role Zy Walker was going to have before he decided to go to the barn
Both measure to the same size but play differently.
Grimes is an athletic OLB while ZWalk would of been an athletic DE.
Think he could play both especially with some additional weight
Seeing as how staff has brought in guys in the 6'3"/6'4" 220ish range to play OLB and had them add 20lbs isn't it conceivable that a guy already at 240 could add 20-30 lbs and end up being a good size for a DE?
FREAK IN THE MAKING!!
And @jbdawg03 I agree he could add weight but SDE would be out of position for his current type of play.
As i mentioned previously,
https://forum.dawgnation.com/discussion/6352/next-to-commit-to-the-g-2020/p1231
ive watched him play in HS. Great athlete and can pass rush. Does he want to stay in the mix and be a run stuffer, taking on SEC tackles as a DEnd ,do the dirty work ?, not from what ive seen.
247 - breakdown - “Has positional versatility. Athleticism and frame combo points towards edge pass rusher but he could be effective at linebacker or on offense at tight end long term. Plays too high and is not refined. Doesn’t seek contact out. More of a finesse athlete currently.”
Great googly moogly - look at those tree trunks for arms!
Maybe Kirby can...I am just curious about the sudden shift in evaluation about him at this point especially given how his stock has dropped a bit with the recruiting services and with teams that were hot and heavy on him during last summer (Tennessee and South Carolina). We passed on other more highly rated players (BJ Ojulari and Zy Walker) who are better fits at OLB and DE, respectively...yet would pursue someone that is a tweener and who has questions about what he is position wise. I realize recruiting boards change but like the late push for Lundy, this seems like a situation where there were better options at the position available but they chose not to make the effort and stay pat only to start reaching now. This is more true with Lundy than Grimes but given how tight we are going to be with scholarships in '21, would it not be better to just pocket the scholarship rather than take a player who will only be a depth piece and you don't really have a plan for. I describe Grimes this way because it is not as though he was an unknown quantity coming his senior season (his hype was greater last year and summer)...if we wanted him, why didn't we pursue then?
I understand where you are coming from. If you read my post......I don't believe he is flipping to Georgia and haven't read the rumor anywhere except today on here.
My point wasn't about whether he is or isn't considering Georgia.
My point was to be careful not to downplay or call signing a 6'3 240lb athlete "meh".
He may turn out to be "meh" .....but good chance he isn't.
The only FBS schools to offer Mahomes were Texas Tech, Rice and Houston.....he didn't turn out to be "meh".
So are you telling me this guys is the next Pat Mahomes /s
I am definitely not
Pat Mahomes system QB
@CZCashvilleDawg This could be pretty cool at UGA for 2020... the "potential" that is here for "D-Rob" to finally realize his FULL play-making ability, while we see the future out on the field with "J-Rob" and all of this on the offense, with Pickens, and Blaylock, etc.. in Georgia's PASSING game?? How cool is that???
Any word on if Cameron Kinnie is leaning our way? I thought I remember @JeffSentell saying that he probably was leaning away but can’t remember for sure. Any one have any ideas?
If there is a flip it will likely be on DL. I wouldn’t consider any of these options as a “major” flip, which is what has been broadcast by insiders at Rivals apparently.
The Grimes vs. Walker comparison doesn’t really fit imo. Walker pushing 260-270 today. True edge, bigger than Cox was. Grimes doesn’t fit the physicality profile we typically look for and would likely struggle to emerge in that room. Keep in mind we still have guys like AA who hasn’t yet cemented himself on the two deep. If Grimes is in this class, safe to say we mismanaged the position from earlier in cycle. BJO comes to mind here.
Huntley is one that would make more sense imo, but we’re sitting nicely with numbers at 3T DT. We’ll see if Kirby has a surprise in store or not.
