Cutting the cord

@jarred_buck We're sports fans. And for years the cable industry has been using sports programming to keep us on their expensive, way too many junky channel packages.

But now it looks like the market has shifted. And even for sports fans, these online service provide a painless transition.

Looking at this thread though, it looks like you just have to try it to see.

Anyone who tries itmthough, I'd try to steer away from proprietary tie-ins. Like I noticed TiVo has an OTA DVR. But if you want to watch shows recorded on it on other TV's, you have to buy a TiVo mini for those other TV's. There's no reason for that. You ought to be able to buy any device you want for the other TV's.

Not that you want a bunch of different brands of devices around your house. But say you decide to go with Amazon Fire TV sticks for the other boxes around your house. But then 2 years later you decide you want all your devices to be Apple devices. You should be able to painlessly migrate your TV's one at a time to Apple TV's. There shouldn't be some corporate proprietary restriction that the peripheral TV's also have a TiVo device plugged into them. The proprietary solutions are just there to give the corporation power over you. The interoperable approach gives power to the consumer.

The Notre Dame game is on NBC this weekend.

You guys who have already cut the cord, is anyone getting the game from any of the online services?

Or is it only the cord cutters who have made arrangements for some kind of OTA antenna that are getting it?

PS Vue doesn't have it. Tablo with OTA antenna for me.

Bumping this up as I didn't see a more recent thread on this topic...

Streaming options and streaming bandwidth have evolved pretty dramatically since this original post. I picked up an Apple TV box to stream Disney +, HBO Now, etc. and have enjoyed the experience so much we're seriously considering ditching DishNetwork and go full streaming.

Has anyone here cut the cord (dish)? Feedback from others I've spoken with seem to gravitate to either YouTubeTV or Hulu but wanted to get some additional perspectives if possible.

    Thanks All!

Yeah I have YouTube TV and love it. My whole family are converts as well. It’s great for sports channels and the unlimited DVR is great.

We’ve tried AT&T Now, Hulu, YouTube, and Sling and we’re going to go with YouTube. Had AT&T back when it was directv for a year and liked it a lot but they keep jacking the price up. Didn’t like that I could only have 1 stream going from the orange package on Sling as I sometimes watch the Dawgs on the TV and another game on my laptop. Didn’t like the interface from Hulu as it was just awkward to me. YouTube has the unlimited DVR and was easy to learn how to use, and was competitively priced so that’s the winner for me.

Concur. YouTube tv. Just got it after Thanksgiving and it has everything for football season. Miss the weather channel and History but I guess my phone tells me the weather and I can just read a book or something to compensate the other

I tried it. It lacked some games I wanted to watch (college football games). I switched to Hulu, the live version without (many) commercials (live shows have them of course).

There are loads of options. I have most of the better ones and still save money compared with the cable. None of the options are perfect in my experience. Hulu, for example, won't let me share my account with my daughter in college. They require a separate subscription for her; good luck on that, Hulu. Netflix allows me to share with her.

I'll switch in a heartbeat to a better service. Competition should create one, and I think it will.

    Go, Dawgs!

Thanks all - overwhelming consensus seemed to be YouTubeTV which I’ve been experimenting with via free trial. Paired up with the new gen AppleTV and I’m really pleased so far.

Lots of tvs have PIP capability but I found the challenge was actually making use of it because of the inputs required in the cable/satellite box. Streaming really makes it a breeze to toggle between up to 4 live games on my projector. This pretty much sold me.

Not sure if it’s been asked but does YouTube tv offer channels like tbs and tvland?

  • MuffingodMuffingod ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

You can check out all the different channels the various services offer here:

In this case they do offer TBS but not TV land

Epson 2045. The new Apple TV 4K was just $20 more than the 1080p so I won't have to upgrade if/when I move to a 4K projector.

    You have a projector too?

Out of curiosity, what channels or games were unavailable to you on YouTube tv when you tried it? I've been pretty surprised at all the channels available for college sports and sports in general but could be something I'm not thinking of
