- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

Pretty much.
Herschel had a list of things he would have been elite in had he focused his training toward that particular thing. Track was one of them.
Would he have beaten Lewis? Probably not. but take off 15 pounds of football muscle and focus toward track and he's probably in the mix for the 1984 olympics.
Just for consideration... in the 1984 olympics Ben Johnson ran a 10.22 for 3rd and Ron Brown ran a 10.26 for 4th (Brown was the 3rd US member of the team). That was in Herschel's wheelhouse at his best at 220 in 1982.
Ron Brown won the NFL fastest man competition twice. In 1987 he faced Walker in a semi-final heat when Brown won. 6.18 for brown, 6.27 for Walker. Brown played for the Rams at 181 that year. Heschel was at 224.
He was an incredible athlete.
I agree and think he is still unreal at his age
I agree. He would have been elite at whatever he decided to be elite at. 40 years later and he would still be considered a big back. Imagine being a LB or DB back in the day trying to tackle that.
other than Bob Hayes and Skeets Nehemiah, you are pretty much spot on.
There have been a few. Rocket Ishmael was a track star at ND. 10.2 100. I remember this because I was at WAZZU at the time and we had a sprinter from Nigeria on the track team who beat Rocket. Lots of talk about getting him on the football field but of course it takes more than just flat speed to play WR.
good get. Forgot about him.
I know it would never happened, but I wonder what type LB he would have been. Didn't he play LB in high school.
Ron Brown too. Gold medalist in the 4x100 in 1988, Pro Bowl WR/KR for the Rams.
Herschel ran a 10.10 100m in Athens, 3/20/82.
remarkable IMO.
It was wind aided, so track circles don't count it.
4.8 wind. If I was aided by a 100 mph gust I couldn't break 12.
Herschel's best wind legal time was 10.23.
