That's a funny thought
Agree to disagree. That's not how coaches think anymore. Young guys are ready to play, and while you don't want to lean on them, if you have to (think he's the best player) then you live with the mistakes because he's your guy of the future. And Stroud is one of those guys, I think Beck needs time to develop.
Did rusty shackleford tell you this? He told me you dont know who he is but he knows who you are
I don't know any elite program (AU is the only one I think of with Nix-- and I do not consider them elite) that depends on a TF QB. They either have one or get a transfer (Ohio State/Oklahoma)
I think both of you @LBCoach and @kurganofprussia are right/wrong. Completely depends on the player and situation.
Certainly trends are going towards playing freshman.....but some really good ones aren't quite ready.
Sometimes a grad transfer makes sense.....sometimes not.
Stroud seems really talented.....but no way to know if he is ready or even more ready than Beck.
Many of these blue chip QBs don't make it......or if they do......it's at school #2
Fromm, Hurts, Lawrence
Auburn is an elite program, not their team per se, but their program is. Clemson relied on a TF QB, USC did, Oklahoma was planning to. Rattler was the plan for the future until Hurts became available. If there's a transfer QB out there as talented as Hurts, I hope we snag him up.
And I don't expect either them to be "ready" but if they're more talented than any Grad QB out there... Which I honestly believe they are... They're the right answer, all I'm saying
It's true. Don't know who rusty shackleford is
You may be right.
Alabama may be starting a freshman next year.
Georgia may be starting a freshman next year.....but I'll agree with @kurganofprussia to the point to suggest that it's irresponsible for Georgia to assume that a freshman will start.....they better be prepared in case freshman isn't ready.
@texdawg and @LBCoach , I'll give you Lawrence. He came in and by game 4 passed the incumbent championship winning QB. I'll even give you Hurts, who didn't win (needed Tua), but was the man his freshman year.
We were not depending on Fromm his freshman year as we had Eason. That was a **** of injury/luck/hot hand.
But, look at LAST year.... Nix was the #1 QB, and took Gatewood's job at AU. After that, no one was expected to play. Hillinksi came in b/c Bentley got hurt. The kid at UNC won the job in preseason, but they didn't have a great year, or are an elite program.
I will stand on the side of this: if we want to win the Natty in 2020 AND Fromm is in the NFL, we have to have more than Beck, Stroud, Mathis and Mailman on campus.
I agree - recent history shows that Frosh QB’s can come in and have success - even get their team to a national title game (Lawrence, Tua, Fromm)
Add in the rush-first nature of the Georgia offense and I can see Kirby giving a first-year QB the job if it’s the right player; especially if the player enrolls early (as Beck will).
And that last part I agreed with you.
This is downside of long responses... sometimes there are 5-6 posts between mine... lol.
At the end of the day, the best player at the position will play. If the coaches think it is a grad transfer then that's the way they'll go, but I personally in my limited QB knowledge, don't know of a transfer QB that is better than Beck and Stroud... Unless Jordan Love wants a shot at big boy football (doubt it)
I'll take this as the compromise and to stop beating the dead horse, lol.
Myself, I would at least get a Bentley or another transfer in for comp and experience... but if Stroud/Beck is better, than so be it. Then the transfer can hold the reins until the young kids take them, whether that is week 0, 3, 5 or whatever...
TOS article on Broderick Jones flirting with Auburn and delaying his signing past ESD so he can "weigh his options" feels ominous. I'd really like to pull out some kind of fatality move against LSU to get some positive juju going. I thought he was the stone cold lock of the class, this year's Blaylock...reason to worry?
I think he wanted to take his visits. Believe Auburn has always been there as second school. Sounds a little clickbait-y but who knows these days
Don't disagree with this either......other than to say....no one......absolutely no one.....has any idea how ready Stroud or Beck will be.
Times have certainly changed.....and QBs come to college more preparred than they did just a few years ago.
The percentages may suggest that Beck or Stroud will be ready.......but they are definitely not 100% and probably not 60%.
Yes.....Georgia will play the best QB.....even if it's a freshman.
Just saying need to be prepared incase freshman isn't quite ready.
