I have heard the 20 year is the best, though I have not tried to give my thoughts.
How/where did you get your hands on this???? I know you're from a small town in Ga. called Whitesburg "my hometown" btw.... this is very very very very rare!!!! "Hines Grocery"!!! Mr. Bud Hines!!!
Honest story......
It's my brother in laws.....not mine.
We had a Christmas party at his house tonight. He has a great liquor cabinet.....lots of really good single malts.
I was digging around for an old bottle of Glenmorangie that I've kept there for years. In the back of the cabinet was this bottle of Pappy Van Winkles. I asked what this was and my brother in law said it was just some bottle a mutual friend of ours gave him a few years ago. We thought it was a cheap bottle of bourbon.
A guy at the party saw it and said......you gotta be shittin me.....a 20 yr bottle of Pappy Van Winkles.......do you know how rare and expensive that is? We said no......so I looked it up on the internet......then my brother in law said......I probably should have thanked Brian more for bringing me this bottle.......but I had no idea what it was.
Anyway......that's how I came to enjoy my first glass of Pappy Van Winkles 20 year on ice.
Wow. So jealous. Most folks have to win their local liquor store’s lottery just to have a chance to fork over hundreds for that bottle.
On that note, have you ever tried Garrison Brothers Single Barrel? It’s a craft distillery outside of Austin, some of the best stuff I’ve ever had.
I have not
I'm in short supply of cool these days.

Basil Hayden’s isn’t bad either at a decent price.
Just had it last night and was about to post when I saw this....it was surprisingly solid
All good. Definitely worth a splurge if you see it around in TX.
Finally got around to buying bourbon at Costco. Their Kirkland brand was $30 for a 1.0 liter bottle. Opted for Jack Daniels Black Label at $35 for a 1.75 liter bottle. Much better value, which surprised me.
Two weeks ago I picked up a bottle of **** 47 Gin. I now know why Wine Spectator rated it the best Gin in the world.
OK @tfk_fanboy , @Tdub0199 , @Dawgatron explain to me how rare this 20 yr Pappy van Winkles is and why it's so rare.
Until Friday night I had never heard of it
first, I hate you lol
Pappy has several things going for it. It is a wheater, which is somewhat rare in the world of bourbon. they age their stuff way longer than most bourbons. that leads to fewer bottles. and like a snowball that leads to more people wanting it, making it harder to get, a 20 year Pappy bottle retails for, I dunno, few hundred? so expensive but affordable. black market for that bottle is closer to a several grand, and maybe more
there are several in the van winkle line, I have a bottle of 10 year old rip van winkle, and everything I have read says the 20 is the best tasting. whether or not it is worth the price is very subjective. but no bourbon drinker would ever turn down a dram of it
most bourbons are aged 3-10 years. there are reasons behind that I can go into but pappy being aged for so long makes it unique. in the world of scotch that is much more common.
