Every top-tier playoff contender has at least 3 ace starting pitchers. Just look at the teams that have won the WS lately. We currently have 1 in Soroka, possibly 2 if Folty, Newcomb, or Fried breaks out. As much as I’d love to see us bolster the lineup, I feel that we also need another ace if we want to win in the postseason.
No doubt. We need a veteran ace to anchor the rotation, like Maddux did when he came on board in the 90's. But it won't happen under Liberty. In the 90's we outbid the Yankees for Maddux's services. To my knowledge we were not even in the mix for Gerrit Cole this off-season. Both cases involved the best pitcher in baseball in the prime of his career. Different ownership, different outcome.
Well, if we won't pay Donaldson $24 mil a year, I don't see an "ace" showing up anytime soon...
I did hear that Carlos Beltran is available for outfield depth if we want to go that route...
I can't give up multiple prospects of that caliber to then potentially only get 2 years of control (opt out after 2021) and still be paying $30+ mill/yr. Just can't do it.
Where did you see this?
Kris Bryant is still the obvious choice for the Braves at 3B. He could replace Donaldson in the lineup and the Cubs are gonna lose him or Baez any way. May as well get something now.
I had a bad feeling with Donaldson. I like watching the guy play and bring it every day but his price could have put a big stink in the locker room. Imagine Acuna thinking this dude is getting what I am getting in 4 yrs instead of 10 yrs. Albies could think the same thing....while I hate losing him, it was the right move moving forward. One of the reasons this team is so fun to watch is the chemistry these guys bring to the dugout.
Strasburg, Scherzer,....Corbin? Good pitcher, but not an ace.
The Braves Way continues.
Heard them discussing it on 680 The Fan in Atlanta, with input from the Braves beat reporter. Basic gist was that the Rockies were probably asking too much, but if a deal could be done it would require Colorado to pay all or part of the 2020 salary and for Arenado to agree to an extension (or at least void that opt out @PTDawg mentioned.)
The best teams in baseball lose 1/3 of their games. They go on streaks where they lose 6 of 10. Postseason, being a small sample size, is a crapshoot. That's why wild card teams can win the Series. The objective of the GM is to put the team in position to make the tournament as often as possible, keep fans in the seats by being competitive year in and year out, and hope things work out from there. You can't predict the face of the franchise would suffer bone spurs and be unproductive in a 5 game series.
The best lineup isn't the one with the most stars. It is the one with the most consistent production throughout. Braves are smarter to get the WAR from Donaldson somewhere else that isn't putting the team in a bad position a few years out with Soroka, Fried, Acuña, Albies, Anderson, Pache, and Waters all under long term control.
AA has made really good, smart moves. Despite the criticism, like passing on Kimbrel, the team has exceeded expectations the last 2 seasons. They were projected to finish 4th in the East last season and won 97 games. I'm going to trust his plan.
All great points, and he even turned out to be right on Kimbrel...
This is far too well thought out and logical. Go away, I want to bash on Liberty some more
Every thing I’ve been reading about the Braves lately, the players there bringing in, looks like there trying to build a World Series team. At least there not sitting the sidelines this year.
