Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:
- Please no inappropriate usernames (remember that there may be youngsters in the room)
- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

If you’d actually bothered to read the sources I posted, you would know that deaths and infections aren’t the only concern here. Our healthcare infrastructure is built to barely carry us through flu season.
Bottom line is, we don’t have enough beds, nurses, doctors, or even test kits at this point. I very much hope that this turns out to be nothing, but that’s likely wishful thinking. If you’ve kept up with how infectious this thing is (twice as much as the flu) and how quickly it’s spread in other countries, you’d know too.
Here’s a scientific study that shows that social distancing (self-quarantines) works, based on data from the 1918 influenza pandemic. I know you won’t read it, but it’s more for those non-ostriches out there:
Here’s an excerpt from the article’s conclusion, to increase chances it gets through your thick skull:
“Nonpharmaceutical interventions were grouped into 3 major categories: school closure; cancellation of public gatherings; and isolation and quarantine.
These findings demonstrate a strong association between early, sustained, and layered application of nonpharmaceutical interventions and mitigating the consequences of the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic in the United States. In planning for future severe influenza pandemics, nonpharmaceutical interventions should be considered for inclusion as companion measures to developing effective vaccines and medications for prophylaxis and treatment.”
Side note to go with the conclusion: this is a novel virus, meaning it’s never been seen in humans before therefore no one has any resistance (like some may have with a flu strain they’ve had previously)
This also means that there is currently no vaccine. The virus has already mutated at least once, and could do so again and again, making vaccines less effective and potentially making the mutated virus more deadly. Something to think about for those who are capable
It's being blown way of proportion but it's very very serious.
The downside risk for the US might be two million deaths from the virus + problems with an very overburdened medical system + economic and social and perhaps political consequences.
It's likely to be very disruptive.
This is a good article on the impact the illness is having on Italian culture.
I've been reading the news, including the science and medical news, while wearing my MD glasses.
I'm concerned about the virus. I'm also concerned about the hysteria. Turning the virus into a political weapon is particularly loathsome in my view.
Hopefully we've learned something from what's happened in China and elsewhere. We in the US are at the beginning of the bubble. China is apparently on the other side and going back to work.
Of course there's a good bit we don't know.
I'm spending some quality time praying for all of us.
Go, Dawgs!

Treat it Normally and seriously.....without the sensationalized drama that makes it seem like Ebola.
Its not.
Call this what you will, the WHO just declared this a pandemic.
Right, it's far far worse than Ebola in terms of ability to spread and ability to infect larger populations.
The Ebola outbreak went on for three years but it was confined to a few specific regions in Africa and didn't make any headway in Europe or the U.S.
Yo why are you bringing facts, knowledge, and well-formulated opinions up in here? I'll just go about my life and if people get sick and die, oh freaking well I guess.
/s in case you didn't know
Recently cancelled a trip to Spain - was scheduled for next week. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but we were going for Las Fallas (major festival) and the thought of intentionally flying into an area known to have this disease during the largest public festival of the year - just seems like an unnecessary risk. That said, my wife and I are young and relatively healthy and not at risk for death; however, what if I go visit my parents the following weekend? What if I interact with a friend's kid? What if we get quarantined in a hotel for 3 weeks? Just not worth it IMO.
Side note: They cancelled Las Fallas today. So good move on my part.
@UGA_2019 I in no way want to discount your point of view. You are obviously coming from this with knowledge and a point of view that many on here don't share.
I don't necessarily think you're wrong.
But the real issue is what this is doing or could do to our economy and what is the value of keeping everything open vs having a two week or whatever quarantine.
The market is already scaring investors to death. If your 40-50 years old you will probably ride it out and get back on track....but what if your 65, 70, 75 years old. How much wealth is this generation, the generation with real money, going to lose because of this.
How many jobs will be lost because small businesses have to shut down because they can't stay open or can't receive product. Think of all the professions closing down for a couple of weeks will effect.
Unfortunately, most in America are just a pay check or two from being on the street.
I understand the issue you bring up concerning hospital beds, doctors and nurses. But the reality is, if the economy can keep moving, Americans are resourceful enough to come up with solutions to a shortage of beds, doctors or nurses.
And I certainly don't want to discount the death toll that not quarantining may cause. But is it worth keeping the economy going vs saving a few thousand lives? What is the worst case scenario with this virus?
I by no means want to sound callous or unconcerned......I'm very much concerned with human life.
But whether or not it's worth quarantining people is certainly a legitimate question.
That's the understated part of this; it's not about the folks who aren't at risk. They'll probably be fine. But you can give it to somebody who doesn't have the ability to just deal with it.
Similar concept to the anti-vaxx crowd. It's not just about you and your kid, but rather the kids around you that can't get the vaccine or are susceptible for whatever reason.
How come we never heard about Covid-17 or Covid- 18?
IF this thing is going to wipeout mankind or throw our country into a 1930s depression can it at least have the common decency to wait until UGA football wins the national title?
That is an excellent point
