Georgia vs. Auburn

sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

It's J.J. Frazier's last game at Stegeman Coliseum. Maybe.

It's also the last home game for Kenny Paul Geno, Houston Kessler and Brandon Young. ... But mainly this will be Frazier's night, and once again he'll probably have to come up big if Georgia will win.

I saw Yante Maten walk into the arena about an hour ago, but he's still a long way from playing. Mark Fox clarified yesterday that Maten also has a sprained MCL, though no other part of the knee. In any case, he's still out tonight, almost certainly for the regular season finale on Saturday at Arkansas, and the SEC tournament may be in doubt too.

This is a game Georgia is favored to win by 5, but after barely escaping LSU here on Saturday - needing Frazier's heroics - then you can't take anything for granted. Auburn comes in here struggling, but the Tigers are athletic, which make them a dangerous matchup for the Bulldogs.

As always, check here for analysis and updates.

Georgia is starting the seniors tonight:

    J.J. Frazier
    Kenny Paul Geno
    Brandon Young
    Houston Kessler
Juwan Parker (who is a redshirt junior)

So between this senior-dominated starting lineup and the predictably sparse crowd to begin the game (6:30 p.m. on a weeknight) I'll be curious what kind of start the Bulldogs can get.

Vitally important note: Bruce Pearl is not wearing a tie. And it bears noting that the last coach to beat Georgia, John Calipari, also didn't wear a tie. Actually, it probably doesn't bear noting.

First time all season, at least as far as I can remember, that someone other than UGA's band performed the National Anthem. The UGA Glee Club sung it tonight. (And did a good job.)

Three of the seniors check out at the 18:03 mark. You can guess which one stayed in. They left with Auburn leading 5-2. Brandon Young, to his credit, tried a jumper right when he touched the ball on Georgia's first possession. It was off. But the fans gave the seniors a standing ovation when they came out.

Auburn leads 9-4 at the first media timeout, and Frazier hasn't taken a shot yet. He's gotten off to some slow starts this season, but lately - i.e. with Maten out - he's not been shy at the outset of games. So this is a departure from recent games.

After Georgia starts 0-for-4 beyond the arc, and 2-for-8 overall, it's Tyree Crump time.

    UGA struggling on the boards...again.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Auburn leads 17-6, with 3s the story: Auburn is 3-for-5, and Georgia is 0-for-5.

Georgia also trailed Auburn by double digits in the first game - in both halves. But the Bulldogs also had Yante Maten for that one.

Georgia getting boat-raced in the rebounding department: 15-6. Too many second chances for the Tigers, and no second chances for Georgia after its many misses.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Georgia also getting boat-raced on the scoreboard too: 25-12, with J.J. Frazier playing very sloppy. He made an ill-advised cross-court pass that was picked off and became a three-point play on the other end. The Bulldogs now have seven turnovers.

It's still relatively early - 7:56 left in the first half - but Georgia looking really bad here.

Jordan Harris, who was announced last Saturday as being out "indefinitely" with a bone chip, is in the game. So out indefinitely apparently was one game.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

And Harris immediately drills a 3, off a nice step-around on a defender. Then Frazier with a steal and layup, and Georgia has the score at 28-21, thanks to that 9-0 run.

It's now a four-point game. Auburn's been flummoxed offensively, allowing Georgia transition chances. Going forward, the Bulldogs just have to guard the 3-point line. The Tigers don't seem to have much offense beyond that.

E'Torrion Wilridge just made his first free throw of the season. He had been 0-for-6. He ended up going 2-for-2 - helped by a lane violation that got him a second chance.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Derek Ogbeide with some big rebounds these last few minutes, including a put-back dunk just now to make it 36-30.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

    Halftime: Auburn 37, Georgia 30.

Georgia did well to get it back to four after being down by 16. It just needs to step out on those 3-point shooters: Auburn is 6-for-12 beyond the arc, so that's almost half their points so far. The Bulldogs did much better in the rebounding department as the first half went on, thanks to Derek Ogbeide. But without Maten that's never far away from being a big problem.

Better energy the last 8 minutes of the first half. Need to come out strong to start the 2nd half.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Second half about to begin here. Obviously a very important second half as far as the meaning to the rest of Georgia's season.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

And we're tied, thanks to Georgia's 3-point shooting: Frazier with one 10 seconds into the half, Turtle Jackson with one on the break, and Wilridge wide open from the top of the key. Georgia hasn't missed a 3 this half, after going 3-for-11 in the first half.
