The Short-sightedness of the NCAA...

edited January 2021 in General

Just want to make this point...

Remember that every time you hear about a guy coming back for his 5th year - because Covid took this year from them and they deserve another year - a high school senior is denied the opportunity to play college sports.

They didn’t raise the 85 total scholly limit - which was completely asinine.

They didn’t raise the limit of 13-15 in basketball, either. And levels that don’t have limits are made up of programs with limited scholarships.

And this affects EVERY sport.

So, the Class of 2021 is getting squeezed. Many college coaches that I have talked to have few - if not zero - spots available because there seniors are choosing to return. I mean, if you aren’t a pro (99% of college athletes), why not get another free year of education? Maybe an advanced degree or a double major is available. Either way, the class of 2021 will miss out on 4 YEARS - the entire experience - because the NCAA can’t see past their own nose...

The NCAA is out to protect the NCAA, period.

Great point Cane. And I agree with Anderson.

The NCAA could have been a great organization that accomplished a lot of good for a lot of people, but big money ruined it, same as it ruins everything.

Amen to this......this has been gut wrenching to a couple of kids I've helped with recruiting.

I have 8 seniors on my team - several of which would definitely play small-ball somewhere in a typical year. This year there’s almost no room for anybody anywhere. It’s tough.

on the soccer side, we’ve had one player receive a “blue shirt” offer to Purdue, she accepted an offer to a D2 school instead. Another didn’t receive any offers, when in a normal year she would. The juco teams will be loaded while some players try and wait it out.

    Juco route is tough, though.

For one, the kid is burning one of their 4 years.

Secondly, they are going to have to compete with next year's seniors, the Class of '22. Those kids and this year's seniors will be splitting spots. And if you are a college coach, and two kids are close, which one would you take? The one with 3 years of eligibility or the one with 4?

I was wondering about that extra year. It is ridiculous that they didn't raise the scholarship limits for one year. Maybe they will.

It’s ridiculous that a billion dollar organization created this mess. They don’t care about the kids at all. The NCAA should have expanded scholarships and provided the money to the schools to pay for them. They are a greedy pathetic organization who has shown their stripes. HS kids will be impacted for years and many schools have eliminated some sports. PATHETIC!!!

I may be mistaken but I thought that seniors did not count against the 85 starting in the summer.
