NATIONAL NAME YOUR POISON DAY
National Name Your Poison Day on June 8th places a few options before you and challenges you to choose. In this case, the idiom can be a cautionary one or it could be your bartender’s way of asking you what you want to drink.
Daily National Republican in Washington, D.C. reported in its March 24, 1864 edition, “The latest fashion in Washington of asking a party what they will take to drink is – ‘Please nominate your poison, gentlemen.'” The story made its rounds to newspapers across the country and by 1867 writers attributed the colloquial term to folks in Indiana.
While “nominate your poison” harkens back to the early days of the temperance movement, the phrase seems to have been used mostly to describe the action of ordering the drink. Even in 1914 as the mayor of New Bavaria, Ohio proposed a law requiring all drinkers to apply for drinking licenses, the phrase was popular. The phrase comes in many forms – pick, choose, or name – and of course nominate your poison.

Caesar. One of my favorites. It’s kinda the Canadian version of the Bloody Mary but IMO much better.
Sadly, if you are below the Mason Dixon line, with the possible exception of a few places in FL, if you would like to enjoy a classic Caesar, you’ll likely have to make your own. Well worth the effort though.
montauk brewing company has their summer ale out now. Been enjoying that. Also Coney Island Brewing just put out a Parachute Jump pale ale that’s also pretty good.
OK, I'll bite because I'm a fan of a gin bloody Mary. What's a Caesar?
I think the main difference is that the base of a Caesar is Clamato juice. It also has a few drops of hot sauce and some Worcestershire sauce. Use a glass and rim it with celery salt. Garnished usually with a stalk of celery and a wedge of lime. I apologize but I can’t remember the exact increments, but you will have no problem finding the proper way online.
There is a Caesar mix but I’m not sure you can find it in the south easily. Even with the mix I add the hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Bartenders in Canada take great pride with their Caesars and some are better than others.
I will say this, if you like a Bloody Mary you will like a Caesar. I like them much more, maybe you will also.
If you enjoy making drinks it’s worth the trouble. I’ll try to remember the recipe I’ve enjoyed before and post it for u in the future. Really though, it’s a matter of taste. Get a base recipe online and fit to taste is my advice. I will be surprised if you are not a fan.
Because of your post my next one I’ll try with Bombay Sapphire gin. Probably be very nice.
I didn’t think to mention, for the hot sauce, I very much prefer Tabasco. To me it makes a difference. Also, I think it’s better if you use Lee and Perrins Worcestershire.
L&P I already like. I saw a bit of horseradish mentioned in Caesar recipes. That sounds like it would compliment the clam flavor.
Absolutely, if you find a recipe you like please let me know. I’m by no means a mixologist but I do love a good drink. Horseradish might fit very nicely.

OK, I salute our Canuck friends. This tasted great. I used the celery salt on the glass rim and ****, Clamato, lime juice, and Worcestershire and Tabasco (scorpian) sauces. Several recipes mentioned steak mix so I guessed a bit of garlic and pepper and they also said to add something pickled so I tossed in a cornichon. Very tasty!
