Aaron wears 99 as a rage against the number retiring machine.
Well, appreciate your view….
But I am still fired up that the Braves are seeing fit to retire Andruw’s number…
Now if only the Hall of Fame voters will take heed!
If you’re going to retire a number there better be a really good reason. I think Andruw Jones is one of the greatest CF of all time with a glove, not the bat.
I like the ring of honor, but to retire a number…you have to be Herschel at Georgia level special.
Some stats to ponder:
-10 gold gloves (1998-2007) ranked in a tie for third all time behind Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente
-fifth in the rookie of the year voting in 1996
-434 career home runs
-1289 career runs batted in
-career batting average of .254
-one of five center fielders to record at least 400 putouts in a season six times. The others are Willie Mays, Richie Ashburn, Kirby Puckett, and Max Carey … my personal favorite of his stats
-152 career stolen bases
-one silver slugger award (2005)
-Hank Aaron award winner (2005)
-51 home runs and 128 RBIs in 2005 (finished second to Albert Pujols for MVP)
-in 2006, became the first Braves player in history to hit at least 40 home runs in two consecutive seasons
-Youngest player to hit a HR in a World Series (hit two in his first two at bats)
-five time all star
-12th player in Baseball history to hit 300 home runs before his 30th birthday
Arguably, his best years were as a Braves player from 1996-2007. Looking at that 11 period alone (out of the 17 he played) , his stats put him in some rarified [Braves, if not the rest of baseball] air.
And we are talking about retiring his number for the Braves…. not all of baseball . Even there, his Hall of Fame voters percentage has gone from 7.3% in 2018 to 41.4% in 2022. The voters are starting to remember his best years and not his last six where his numbers, admittedly, dropped off after he turned 30 (the last two years of his playing career was in Japan)
As for the other Braves’ players who have had their numbers retired, his stats at least warrant a ranking along with Dale Murphy. And Chipper Jones has stated that he was the best “next at bat batter” he ever played with.
Regardless, the Braves ARE retiring his number and I totally agree with this move!
Andruw Jones…. Just the greatest Braves center fielder ever!!
P.S. The Dawgs DID retire Theron Sapp’s number simply because he broke the drought…so @Kasey , there is precedent!
He couldn’t hold Otis Nixon’s jock haha
Only a Mets fan would say that……😎
Imagine what he could have done if he played hard every night!
Rico's on a a rampage! Was the announcer Milo Hamilton?
Yep. either him or Ernie Johnson Sr.
I can remember getting my portable 6 transistor radio and going out in the street at night, to get good reception, and listening breathlessly to each night game to see if he was going to extend his hitting streak in 1970.
From wikipedia:
"Carty had his best season in 1970 when he hit 25 home runs with 101 runs batted in and, won the National League Batting Championship with a .366 batting average, the highest average in the major leagues since Ted Williams recorded a .388 batting average in 1957.[11] Despite not appearing on the All-Star ballot, he was voted to be a starting outfielder for the National League as a write-in candidate in the 1970 All-Star Game, playing alongside Hank Aaron and Willie Mays in the outfield.[12][13] It would be the only All-Star appearance of his career. Carty also compiled a 31-game hitting streak in 1970 (the longest by a Braves hitter in the franchise's Atlanta history until Dan Uggla surpassed it with a 33-game streak in 2011)."
That 31 game hitting streak kept me going that summer, that's for sure!
My favorite all time Atlanta Brave!!
Dylan Dodd pitched a gem last night in his MLB debut!
Scattered six hits in five innings, one earned run, three strikeouts and NO WALKS!
The Braves debuted two rookie pitchers in the first five games of a season for the first time in their history.... dating back to 1876..... and have a 4-1 record to show for it!
Let's sweep St. Louis today and come home against the Padres to get the home season going!!!
Go Braves!
Braves win! Walk off single for Arcia for a 7-6 home opening win against the Padres!
6-1!
Go Braves!
Arcia sure is delivering the goods early in the year. He’s def got something to prove
What does he have to "prove" ?
That he’s the answer right now for replacing Dansby. Many wanted to see Grissom.
Grissom couldn't field well enough. Shumate couldn't hit enough. Both are back down in AAA working on their craft. Barring a trade, who else is there? I don't think anyone is going to "replace" Swanson - who is hitting above .500 I believe - but Arcia has already "proven" he can be a big league SS - based on his 4 years of starting for a division winning ball club. I see him as just having to be himself and he'll do fine.
