UGAWire was counting kicker Charlie Ham and long snapper Beau Gardner. I believe both of them are walk-on transfers. Most outlets count only scholarship transfers.
I'm skeptical that Nasir Johnson will get many reps as a freshman, with Brinson, Stackhouse, Jarrett, Hall, McLeod and possibly Jordan Thomas ahead of him in the rotation.
But I do like that we have Nazir and a Nasir now!
Good article to add. The 2 "unaccounted for" TP adds are a kickoff specialist and a long snapper. In the eyes of Dawgnation reporters may not warrant an announcement or article here. Both probably Hope Scholarships additions. I suspect Pope is a Hope scholarship add as well. At least until next recruiting cycle refreshes the scholarship count after TP and graduation.

It is a roll of the dice to expect anything beyond rotation or special teams from most incoming freshmen. Every year we have seen 1 or 2 , usually high ranking freshmen, distinguish themselves before the season and carve out a bigger role. Nice to wish for more but the odds are not good that there will be more.
That being said, recently there was an article on Dawgnation about Johnson that was very flattering. Johnson said he compared his game to something between Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. It talked about his size, strength and agility. I wanna say, in the article, was a video of Johnson doing gymnastic type moves including a backflip. At 6'5" 320 lbs. Big, athletic dude.
According to Rivals Johnson was the 133 rd ranked player and 7th ranked DT. Thomas was ranked 196th and 13th ranked DT.
Normally I would agree with what you are saying and you are probably correct. However, Frazier and Johnson standout to me as freshman that will see the field (barring injuries) this year. Greene also is a possibility. Frazier may be, may, be the biggest impact freshman this year for us. Johnson is a monster of a DL who supposedly has gotten much bigger and stronger than his listed size and weight when he was recruited. Johnson along with Joseph Jonah-Ajonye could both be impact players this year. This freshman class is loaded full of diamonds.

I am seeing some subtle shifts in how CKS is recruiting as a result of NIL and the TP.
CKS has, up until recently, followed the AL model of recruiting the best players he can. Then he levels the playing field and lets the chips fall where they may. There is a little loyalty to experienced players over freshmen but that is mostly because freshmen are unproven in SEC play.
The result of that style of recruiting (with the talent UGA attracts) is that older players that don't develop as much get recruited over. They see the handwriting on the wall and leave. So, to some degree, UGA NEEDS to play freshmen players. There will always be heavy participation by freshmen on special teams with the cream (at least a handful?) becoming rotational players on O and D. Off course injuries could push freshmen into the forefront ready or not.
Because of this years team make up, KJ Bolden will have to start sooner rather than later. IF Everette, Humphrey and Harris don't take BIG development steps ERIV will be nipping at their heels. There could be other's but who? It could be any of them. They are all talented. It is a question of physical and mental readiness.
Difficult to predict. We all have our favorites. Frazier is one of mine. He will be impacted by ETN's durability and BRob's availability.
The subtle changes I see in UGA recruiting is the debate of buying players vs developing players. UGA is getting less involved in the 5* ($$$) business and more vocal about how this staff develops NFL players. That seems to equate to a shift in players that are cheaper up front but still have high ceilings. They just need maybe more development than the 5* players that want to get paid up front. These players (example lower rated OL) may stay in the program longer than the 5* (3 and done) players (Starks, Mykel Williams, Travon Walker, etc etc).
The way UGA/CKS recruits there are quite a few freshmen players that could/should become significant contributors. Just hard to predict who they will be.
Yep. I saw that Johnson ranked higher than Thomas by most of the services, although not by a huge amount. The reason I said Thomas would "possibly" be ahead is because he made spring camp.
That's often another factor in freshmen contributing. If they attended spring camp and weren't injured during the off-season, they seem to be readier to contribute than slightly higher ranked guys who missed spring camp or got injured. They exception is often — as you note, generally — the super-talented guys, of whom Frazier could turn out to be an example this year.
This is a very good post. I couldn't agree more. I was pondering something similar. The days of stacking players class after class is probably over with a few exceptions. The exceptions are when you have a position or assistant coach who is considered the best at their position in the country you can still convince players to come and wait. A couple of examples are the linebackers at UGA and the quarterbacks and wrs at Ohio State.
Now to your point I think the new model is you have to play the 5* freshman unless they are flops in order to get them to stay and not jump ship. This means the other players ahead of them are under a lot of pressure to perform or leave (which we see every year now). I think now you may have a top 5 class followed by a top 1 or 2 class and back and forth like that giving some breathing room for some of these guys to develop. I would look for more flyers (McKonkey types with huge upside who will stay even if a 3rd teamer) taken this year and a lower class rank to give all those stars a chance to grow and not jump ship. Not sure if we will see this at the other powers as well like OSU, Michigan, Texas, and Alabama.
This is good news for other teams and for college football, but not for Georgia.
