@christopherules Yeah, being a Braves fan in the 80's was tough. We had some great hitters: Murphy, Horner, and Claudell Washington, just no pitching. Finished last in our division 5 seasons over a six-year span.
Same for the Braves when they first moved to Atlanta in 1966. Aaron and Matthews,, Rico Carty, Felipe Alou. I think that squad had seven players that hit twenty or more homeruns. Lots of hitting, just no pitching. We finished fifth in the National league that year.
Aaron had a down year that year as I recall it, hitting just .279. But 44 homeruns and 128 rbi's.
That's a down year?
The Braves are really two organizations. Pre 1991 and Post 1991.
From 1966 to 1990 the Braves made the playoffs exactly twice. 1969 and 1982. Both times they were swept in the playoffs. So prior to 1991 they had never won a playoff game. Most years they were not just bad….but the worst team in Baseball.
Post 1991 the team has had a lot of success. 2WC's lots of NL titles and NL East\West titles. Should they have more WC's? Yes. But Baseball can be a funny game in a short series.
Bobby Cox is the main reason for the change. He came back as GM in '87 or somewhere around there. And laid the groundwork for the '91 breakout season. The Braves have been a winning franchise ever since.
I began my Atlanta Braves fandom around 1976. I turned 13 years old that spring, in May. That was when Dale Murphy was a rookie. However, it wasn't all bad…. because later on that same year in the fall???
THAT WAS ALSO THE YEAR THAT GEORGIA SHUT OUT ALABAMA 21-0!!!!!!
GO DAWGS!!!!
Rookie Schwellenbach on the mound tonight against the Angels. ERA is 3.95, but 77 strikeouts in 70.2 innings pitched which is pretty good.
Meanwhile…Fried isn't Fried any more…wonder if they will just let him go in free agency after this season.
Some team will make outlandish offer, never fails.
Either he gets in the gym and puts on some weight or I think it’s fine if he leaves.
I hink they will. Seems like they have numerous guys throwing lights out throughout the farm system.
The Dodgers or Metz for sure.
Fried will be fine. He tends to gradually get back in rhythm when shutting down for a little bit. More concerned with the up & down of Morton and his age.
Ithink they will.
These minor injury issues with his forearm may end up being a blessing in disguise as he could end up being more affordable and not able to obtain the long-term contract that was originally forecast.
I'm wondering if the Braves will use the Patriot's approach and get rid of someone a bit earlier rather than a bit too late with Fried. He's had a lot of innings over the past few years…could be wearing down?
Believe Braves are not eager to go 5 or 6 years with a pitcher Fried's age.
GO BRAVES!!!!
