I don't disagree with either of you on the details, but the "turnover bug" didn't just bite Carson Beck on Saturday night. This is a recurring issue (see the Alabama game). “I was just off it felt like the entire game,” Beck said (from the article). I think he has been struggling with his accuracy even before Saturday night.

My original point was that overcoming 3 interceptions and 0 touchdown passes against the #1 team in the nation to win by 15 is a monumental feat. This win happened in spite of a comical performance (as CKS described it) by the passing game because the OL, Trevor Etienne, and the Defense overwhelmed UT in a performance that they won't soon forget.

    GO DAWGS!

Am I 100% happy with the way Beck has played so far? No. These receivers need to share some of the blame. Smith and Young both played as if the ball would not or could not come to them. The ball to Smith was on target, but Smith did not come out of his break at all. He never shield the defender from the ball. What kind of route was that? Beck is playing as if he never knows where the receivers are going to be and that is damning for a QB. No excuse Beck can and must play better, but so do the receivers.

Anyone know if it’s possible to appeal targeting to SEC office, in hopes of getting the player available for 1st half of next game?

Yes, absolutely. I'm right on with that. I just thought Brooksie's thought needed some backup, as quarterbacks do just get the blame on paper for interceptions, even when it's nothing to do with their component of the play.

    From a USA Today article:

If a player is ejected for targeting in the second half of the game, they and their conference can appeal it to the national coordinator of football officials, who would then review it. Per the rulebook:

“Based on the review, if and only if the national coordinator concludes that is is clearly obvious the player should not have been disqualified, the suspension will be vacated. If the national coordinator supports the disqualification, the suspension for the next game will remain.”

I read comments from both you and Brooksie and they are always well written and well thought-out. I think the next two weeks are going to be interesting for receivers and QB's based on the comment made by CKS. It wouldn't surprise me to see a noticeable improvement in the passing game when they face UF!

    GO DAWGS!

I really saw some similarities between Everette and Bullard from this game. Maybe star/safety would be a better position for Everette than a cover corner. Next game would be a prime opportunity to try that since we will need depth at the star.

@MontanaDawg the "off target" throws and "throws into traffic" are actually symptoms of a WR corps that can't get separation from defenders. The throws are off target because the WRs are late getting to their spots on timing routes and the throws into traffic are because of guys who can't get open. @MontanaDawg of the high school recruits on UGA's depth chart, none were top 150 players coming out of high school. Of the transfer portal WRs, none but Humphries were #1 WRs, and he was for a 2-10 team that went winless in the SEC. Where UGA could have badly used AD Mitchell and even Jermaine Burton in 2023 even if only because Bowers and McConkey were hurt, Mizzou, Miami and Vandy don't miss the guys that they lost to UGA at all. Quite the contrary, they've been rolling since they lost those guys.

It is easier to blame Beck and Bobo for this mess than it is to blame Kirby's years of bad QB recruiting. But look at the NFL: the only UGA guys actually playing are Pickens and Hardman. Guess what? Both were 5 star recruits. And while Hardman technically was signed by Kirby, he was actually recruited by and gave his commitment to Richt.

@benzone…Valid points, and I agree. We keep missing on the really top wide receiver recruits, and I honestly DO understand why. We just don't have the kind of proven elite passing QB in our ranks, and the top receivers aren't coming here for the most part because of it. Beck is not a top elite QB and won't be in the Heisman conversation. We're known as "RBU".

The QBs we have on board aren't the kind that are going to attract top WRs either, so I don't know how to fix this "problem" unless it's via the portal or we get lucky and some of the guys turn into studs like Bowers or McConkey. And we've had very mixed success with the portal - definitely no WR standouts.

@GtheGreek I consider your posts to typically be spot-on, fair, and insightful… really good. But I think (basically) saying that the Dawg’s coach is a flat-out liar probably doesn’t meet that usual standard 🤔

Elsewhere in the article, I’m really glad Thorson got called out in a positive way. Punters are rarely mentioned, much less in the in-depth manner by CR here, and our punter was a HUGE benefit to the overall effort… without Thorson, overcoming the officiating disadvantage becomes a much deeper hole to dig out of (maybe even unlikely?).

Finally, I wish CR would let go of the “Smart was lucky” (Miss. St. game) narrative he keeps resurfacing… most everyone else left it behind once the UT game started (controversy aside). Reminds me of a few years ago when MG could/would not let go of the SBIV negative narrative 😎

Great to have a bye week to get people healthy and focused… eager for the Gators game!

@candlerpark This is a REALLY good assessment and a logical proposal that would be great if someone had access to the NCAA to promote this. And your reminder to all that the rule is to protect BOTH players, offense and defense, is a critical one that is frequently forgotten.

When I was young (long time ago) and playing football (decent defensive end, scrub/blocking tight end 😝), neck injuries were super common, at all levels of the sport, and sometimes resulted in damaged vertebrae, broken necks, and even paralysis. The issue back then was called “spearing” and some of us were even encouraged to lead with our head, hence the emergence of these huge collars some of us wore on the D line.

I’m GLAD that targeting rules have been put in place and continue to be refined… @CandlerPark ’s idea would be an excellent further upgrade, IMHO

For at least two years now — long before Saturday night — I have wondered why more coaches haven't spoken out against the devastating severity of the targeting rule. Why is a kid ejected from a game (or parts of two games) for doing something that is often accidental and is usually controversial and even debatable? Meanwhile, a kid can INTENTIONALLY grab and twist an opponent's facemask or INTENTIONALLY blast a guy 5 yards out of bounds, and it's simply a 15-yeard penalty. I've long thought that targeting should be some sort of special "super personal foul," where a TEAM (not the player) is penalized 20 yards instead of 15. If that player gets a second confirmed targeting penalty in that same game, THEN he could be ejected for the rest of that game — but just that game. There should be no carryover. I know they're trying to get bad tackling out of the game and I think they have for the most part. I don't think any player, knowing the consequences, is intentionally targeting folks. But the current penalty, I think, is just too harsh for something that is done unintentionally. And also, it's really time for referees to start calling this penalty on offensive players as well, which is allowed under the rules.
