what about Bo Nix? He was pretty bad at Auburn. Bo Wallace was just ok in Ole Miss. Bo Diaz was replacement level for the Reds.
There’s only one way that I know of to do a NIL Buster. But first please allow me to preface my primary comments with this. I’m NOT against athletes In Particular college football players getting a Reasonable stipend In Addition to a scholarship with full room & board, meals etc. But NIL because of AGENT greed coupled with Player greed has gotten absolutely out of hand !!
SO what to do ? It would take ALL schools being in Unity. I’m not very sure that’s even possible. But say for a moment it was. Fans would have what might be a long period of suffering but in the end !! Go to a scab team theory like the NFL had to do when players went on strike.
Instead of teams vying against each other for the very best using $$ as an incentive. Take on 1 and 2 stars or maybe even No stars, the highest being maybe 3 stars. Offer them a full scholly with all the trimmings of that and say $75K minimum and $150K maximum. NO transfers at all. If the player signs he’s there until he A) Goes pro B) Exhausts his eligibility C) Quits the school AND if he quits No other school can take him D) Is kicked off the team
Now the lack of 4 and 5 star players would hurt the Quality of play but at least there would be Loyalty !! Now certainly 4 & 5 star players wouldn’t be barred from playing at any school They choose and Any school that chooses Them. But the Maximum stipend would Still be $150K
Regardless of if their the next Tom Brady.
The NFL would have to cooperate to !! And I’m not very sure That’s possible either. But No player can be Drafted Or taken in Free Agency that hasn’t had a minimum of Three years at the college level.
This would stop the idea of “ Well I’ll just go straight from HS to the NFL”. I know, I know I’m day dreaming. But NIL has become Insane !! And the Student/Athlete moniker has become quite hypocritical. There are exceptions but by and large just listen to these guys do an interview !! It’s pretty obvious that Education is the last priority. Again there are players that are exceptions to that comment. I don’t know if Anything can be done to stop this run away train that is NIL. Sad. 😥
Up votes and down votes aren’t really all that important to me. But I noticed that all the posters here that seem to be saying, like Me that NIL is far to extravagant are being down voted. Now we’re talking a young man ( men) fresh out of HS that has never taken a single collegiate snap in a CFB game, really hasn’t even practiced with the team making Millions of $$. Is it merely jealousy on my part ? A resounding NO !! It’s about Fairness. Really CFB is being held hostage by these Agents and the Players they represent.
To put a bit more perspective on it, it takes Many years of Dedicated Study and Training using intense discipline. Look at what a Well Established Brain Surgeon’s yearly salary is. A person out there helping to Save Lives and compare That to a guy that’s good slinging a pigskin !!
From the Internet: A well-established brain surgeon, or neurosurgeon, in the United States can expect to earn an average salary of $368,879 per year. Top earners in this field can make as much as $400,000 annually.
Doesn’t it look like that NIL has gotten out of hand ?? Keep in mind more than apt these guys will go on to the NFL and make Even More $Millions. Down vote away doesn’t hurt me any. What hurts me is to see the sport I’ve loved for so long being destroyed by pure Greed.
According to a Sports Illustrated article Curtis will meet twice more this week with Bobo and the Duck OC each. EIther that's doing your due dilligence or there's another word for it.
how many people pay to see brain surgeons work? How many concessions to their patients buy when in their care? Do they sell personalized lab coats for the best brain surgeons?
this is simple capitalism at work. I notice no one complains too much about how much the coaches make, or the tv networks…just the players. Why is that?
NIL makes it interesting, but if we get one of the two- I would rather have Cantwell. I think we get them both!!
Vote Down Guy or Gal—-For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would vote down a plea for a rational implementation of NIL. (Not talking about me) I don't think any of these people who post about an out of control NIL have anything against a stipend for college football players (including me), but it needs to be consistent and the same for all. Who wants anyone like FAT BASTARD (Longhorns anyone?) with their vast and almost limitless revenue, to come in and eat everybody's lunch and take all the Superstars?
I don’t think Coaches should get paid that much $$ at the CFB level either. So if You or a family member or close friend have a nodule in your brain are you gonna call in a 5 Star QB still in HS ?
Just so you know I have a myriad of health problems including Leukemia and I just found out last week that I have a precursor to bone cancer and Have had it since 2022 and didn’t realize it. It generally morphs to full blown bone cancer some where within a five year period after discovery so I’ve been on the clock all this time. Bone cancer is The most painful type and very little they can do to alleviate it. Not pointing this out to throw a pity party. Just trying to compare the Importance of a top level healthcare pro to a kid still in HS that’s a good athlete. Something is Very broken in our society !! Out values are warped !! And that includes Me.
My point is Not about jealousy. If I’m gonna be jealous of someone about $$ why not go full jealous and be jealous of Elon Musk the world’s richest man ?
With due respect to you and not trying to be sarcastic as I know you don’t make the rules. But there is something Grossly Wrong with some kid that hasn’t even got his HS diploma yet commanding $9 million because he can sling a football !! Yes I realize it’s fan driven and that’s why Fans should take a stand against it !!
I fully agree with you about Coaches they to make Far to much $$ BUT I can see Why they make more as they are responsible for a whole team of players where as the individual player is only responsible for themselves. The HC even gets allot of hot water for what players do off the field as those antics embarrass the school on a Ntl. basis. And can effect recruiting. So a HC has allot more responsibility than an individual player.
The folks I’m Really angry at is the NCAA and the individual Conference Commissioners they could have fixed this long ago. I know the ole supply and demand routine. Fundamental capitalism.
But there’s Still a fairness issue here. Capitalism also dictates that Costs are passed on to the customer in many cases. True ? Well the customer in this case are the fans. At the rate CFB is going you’ll have to Be Elon Musk in order to afford to attend a game !! I guess there will come a point I’ll stop watching it anyway even though I’ve been a fan most of my 68 years. Besides that the live stream from the tomb will probably be pretty lousy anyway ! 🤣
i think having a college football player operate medically on someone is a false equivalency. They aren’t trained to do so. But people pay to see them perform in a way they won’t for doctors. Throw in all the other tertiary cash flow (concessions, memorabilia sales, parking, hotels, restaurant) then the money tree is growing much more exponentially.
Sorry to hear about your ailments. Hope you are able to overcome them.
What athletes make doesn’t bother me. Tennis and golf players have been in high school making millions of dollars going back to the 70s and 80s and no one cried foul about that. Baseball and basketball players could get drafted and sign contracts for millions of dollars and again it wasn’t an issue. I think the problem is this pay for play is legalized to an extent and p’out in the open unlike before. It’s a change and people don’t like change. And the grown men that foot the bill probably dare j say don’t like young men much younger than them making a sum the old man never could at a similar age.
Coaches have more responsibility yes, but the players do as well. If a coaches messes up they will likely get another chance somewhere. If a kid screws up, he may not have the same opportunity.
Yes costs are passed on to the consumer. Such is capitalism. That’s the agreement. The ncaa could’ve avoided this years ago but they wanted to keep up with sham amateurism. Rather than read the writing on the wall, offer small stipends while writing the policy, they let the courts make the decision for them. And here we are.
I don’t begrudge these kids getting all the money they can while they can in a world that celebrates so many other individuals doing something similar.
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. This is as you made clear a reflection of our society at large. An entitlement driven society. So I guess when the fans start drying up and at this rate I think they will the $$ tree will dry up.
The least they could do is drop the Student Athlete moniker as in the majority of these guys it has Zero to do with education. It is semipro football plain and simple. I don’t know your age but CFB Used to represent so many things of value much more important than $$. Those values have been pretty much wiped out.
I can’t speak for All older men only myself but I’m not jealous. But I think there’s something terribly broken about our society when a kid makes that much $$ and hasn’t even got his HS diploma yet. It’s just my opinion and you know what they say about those. Yes changes come along. But speaking for Me some of those changes Stink.
once they changed the tv contracts in the late 70s/early 80s that’s where this was all going. Tv Execs and college presidents saw money trees growing and bought the orchard. Which is why I have no problem with “unproven” players getting what they think they are worth and what these college coaches and boosters are willing to pay.
I see what you’re saying. I saw it in your first comments. And unfortunately you’re right. But My point is I think it’s a very sad commentary when we as a society place More value in a 5 star HS QB than a physician that saved say 10 peoples lives last year.
Better yet a military service member that had both legs blown off in combat. Yes include ME as part of the origin of this problem. Because being a Fan I helped contribute to this monster. But I still think it’s a reflection of our society and the things we place value in.
We used to celebrate the Hero’s of The Gridiron. But now that seems sort of hypocritical. Hero ?? No some Very young guy making Millions of $$ while guys his same age go through very intense mental and physical training to go protect our country and its interests for roughly $25K at the entry level.
I know, I know it’s simply capitalism I get that. But To Me it’s somehow very wrong. And again I helped create it along with millions of other fans.
And we’re rapidly approaching the time where DGD doesn’t mean much. DGD for what ? Because he got $2 million More than another player.
It’s all over my simple minded head. I don’t hold the intelligence to grasp all this. But speaking only for Me. This just seems So wrong. It’s rapidly approaching a time where only the wealthy will actually be able to attend games. For lower middle class and poor it’s already there.
But we do Both agree on Who the real culprit was that Could have and Should have fixed this, the NCAA with the cooperation of Conference Commissioners. Talk about people paid to do Nothing that’s the NCAA. They Never tackle the really tough issues head on but as you said and I agree pass it on to a team of lawyers.
I don’t know the answers but No this is change that I definitely don’t like !! Oh and you did educate me on something I never realized that tennis and golf paid that much $$ in the late 70s and early 80s but I’ve never paid much attention to those sports. I’m a college football fan ( Dawgs) and a smidgen of college baseball (Dawgs) though I don’t keep up with that nearly as much. You and I may disagree on this issue but your comments are both very civil and reasonable and I certainly appreciate that !!
simplest answer…who’s cutting the checks? Team owners and networks. That’s the main problem.
I see that for the NFL, yes true. But I’m not sure about CFB. I’ll say this then I’m gonna close and get my beauty rest and with My mug it takes lots and lots of beauty rest Lol !! But if this is how things are to be in CFB then schools need protection for what they are paying for.
A contract with things like Possibly: claw back of $$ if the player transfers and the same for off field antics, maybe must complete their junior year ( 3 years) before moving on to the NFL. Possibly even Performance Bonuses but Performance claw backs. Simply put a much more structured contract than the current scenario.
And the bottom line is it’s simply semipro football. So if this is how it’s gonna be Both the school and player should benefit. What am I Getting for what I’m Paying you ? Capitalism. Just for the record so you know I’m Sure not an advocate for Socialism and worse Communism !! Oh No !!
Our system of capitalism might be far from perfect but it’s the best thing going I think we can both agree on that. So good night to you, I enjoyed our conversation and I appreciate your well wishes about my health. I didn’t mean to sound like a cry baby I was using that to try to illustrate my points. I’m not very articulate in writing but even worse verbally Lol !! Good night hope you have a great rest of the week and same to All the posters here !!
school are getting tens of millions of dollars from TV rights deals. And if the school is successful like Georgia has been in the Kirby era they will get more applications and students which means more $. They’ve also started charging higher prices which they will get as long as they are successful. Obviously not on the NFL level money wise but still a good chunk of change. Just less now that they have to pay the going rate.
and college has always been a minor league for the nfl or else players would be able to join the league at any time.
