Brings to mind two other highly-rated private school quarterbacks that came to UGA as can’t miss prospects and left never coming close to their projected greatness…Jacob Eason and Brock Vandagriff.

It’s very different being the best player on a mediocre team and then going to college and being just an average athlete…Gotta really look at the competition; he’s not gonna be in Kansas anymore!

It may come down to how he relates to the staff. Bobo is a good recruiter and has had success as a QB coach, mentoring a number of QBs (Stafford, Murray and Greene).

“I’ve built a relationship with Coach Bobo and Coach Smart and they plan on coming to the house as well. So I’m excited about that,” Curtis said back in January.

“My relationship with the coaches, Coach Bobo and Coach Gummy (Montgomery VanGorder) most importantly," Curtis shared while discussing his recruitment. "I think they’re a powerhouse and they have great coaches all around. They have the players up there and they’re very disciplined.”

You're both right. Eason lost his (UGA) job to injury, and didn't exactly light up the college ranks as predicted. As an aside, good kid and family. Go Dawgs!

dont think he went to a private school either but Washington high school football is a lower level of competition.

Jared Curtis will also have better OL and WR than Jacob did.

Realistically if Oregon offers $8 mil and UGA offers only $4 mil look for him to be a duck. But conversely if Oregon offers him $8 mil and UGA offers him $7 mil or even $6 mil he Might decide that UGA is the better place to be in spite of less NIL.

In this NIL climate speaking For Me there’s little to get excited about until they ink their name on a LOI. They can and Have changed their minds on signing day. If we get him Great !! If not we Still have great QBs already on the roster. It is what it is.

Brother Montana I see what you’re saying and you’ve Been saying and absolutely agree with you. But much damage to traditional CFB as it Was has already been done. Many of these issues are locked in place.

So not only would Congress need to do things going Forward they we need to do things retroactively and I don’t know if they Can or Would. If they did the lawsuits would be immediate. The Reality is CFB is high $$ semipro football. The semipro programs out there ( not speaking of college) and arena football don’t make Even Vaguely what these kids coming out of HS make !!

I predict that gradually more and more CFB fans will start drifting away and start spending their $$ on semipro teams as a sort of “filler” entertainment between NFL.

I haven’t been to a Dawgs game in many years due to mainly health. But I’ve heard that even for cupcake games the ticket prices are astronomical for the average middle class family.

So if one can go watch a game for $25 where the players have allot of zeal and desire and effort vs paying $75 to watch players who have a laid back Well if we win good, if not no biggie I’m still getting paid great, besides that I’m Saving my body for the NFL . It’ll take some time but CFB will crumble.

Some people wrongly think that it’s the mega donors that fund CFB, Nope it’s the Collective spending of Millions of average American fans. Take them away and the house of cards will fall.

Will the Agents that represent these players care if that happens ? Nope. They’ll simply turn to those non-CFB semi pro players and say Hey excuse me but can I talk to you a minute about your financial future.

As @Kasey pointed out ( no sarcasm at you Kasey) to me Capitalism that’s the word. All about the $$. So fans as Buyers will begin to look for the best quality but also cheapest as with most all items. And no one could blame them.

This recruitment marks a crossroad in the UGA recruiting philosophy. UGA prefers to "homegrow" its player talent and supplement perceived deficient areas with players from the TP. But does that still make sense at the QB position?

UGA prefers to sit its QB recruits 2-3 years while they (gain CKS's trust) pick up the skills and offensive system knowledge needed to successfully run the offense. Does it now make sense to pay a QB recruit $5-$8 M (2-3 years) to sit on the bench?

Considering GS and RPuglisi presumably make (significantly) less NIL while presumably starting over Curtis in '26 and '27, how do those starting QB's ( as well as all the other starting players) handle their back up (reserve player) making more NIL then them?

This puts UGA into a crossroad dilemma. UGA prefers to develop homegrown players. That is the way UGA/CKS has been able to manage the process up until now. But paying a QB to ride the bench for 2-3 years seems wasteful and potentially divisive within the team structure.. Would it be better to cherry pick the best TP QB (see Cam Ward) every year or 2 and literally pay for play? Or does CKS push QB's into the starting line up in their 1st or 2nd year?

This recruitment seems a toss up. Wouldn't surprise if it went either way. But it seems like a pivotal point in what the direction of the UGA program becomes after this decision.

theoretically Gunner will be back for his RS senior year in 26. This will ostensibly put Puglisi, Montgomery, and Curtis on equal footing. Curtis if his price is to be believed will be given every chance to win the job.

If he doesn’t he will likely transfer. Hopefully his NIL contract will require he give some of the $ back. Either way Kirby will adjust and adapt.

I personally would rather pursue Bentley this cycle, but it’s hard to argue with the physical traits of Curtis.

  • navydawgnavydawg ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

Absolutely Nothing against Curtis. If Dawgs get him that’s great !! But I posted on the other thread Gunner’s stats. They were actually Better than Curtis and at every bit as competitive school perhaps even more so.

TIMING. That’s what’s involved here. If Gunner was coming out of HS Now with the Same stats he had he’d probably command Allot of NIL. But past is past on that.

The thing is if the O Line can provide adequate protection I honestly believe we’re gonna see Great things from Gunner as Now it seems we have receivers that can Catch the ball. It boils down to the O Line giving decent pass pro and decent holes for our RBs. I use the word “decent” because I believe that will be sufficient especially early on.

As Dawgs play better teams the O Line will need to get better than just decent and with game snaps one would Expect them to. We’ll see……..

A word on Mike Bobo we can go back and forth all day about his OC abilities. But purely as a QB Coach to the best of my knowledge he’s more than adequate at that. So some QB recruits and their families might consider that a positive.

You all make valid points. Ohio State spent most of its $20M last season on retention of players - not on paying for new transfers - in order to win their National Championship. Will Howard was the most important player gotten via the portal. And the reason they got him was not because he was elite, because he wasn't an elite QB. However, he was very good and more than anything - he had the experience playing starting QB for a season or more at K State.

So will it be experience or talent that rules the day now when it comes to QBs? My Answer: Experience. So that's where I would be putting my monies when it comes to QBs (not on retaining QBs to sit on the bench).

Yes, Kirby will have to decide if he pays to retain QBs just like he will have to decide on other position players. Other than Gunner Stockton, Arch Manning may be the last starting QB in a Top 10 Program that stays from start to finish in his college career. Will Howard only needed one season on the right team with the right players to bring home a NC even though he had to learn a brand new system in record time. His experience was key to being able to make that transition pretty much flawlessly.

Whether it is Curtis or Bentley or another new inexperienced QB, in general, I wouldn't count on any of these 4 & 5 star QBs sticking around more than one or maybe two seasons at most before a team either plays them or loses them. Going forward, you may have the rare exception to this rule and get a 5-star guy that stays for his entire college career with one team, but my bet is that is because he starts by Year 2. Obviously, Kirby realizes this fact. He'll have to decide how to manage these guys and their expectations. He knows he can't keep them all.

UGADad20 you hit on a major point that a lot of fans miss. It's not just offering and paying the most, it's managing your roster and locker room. When you bring in a guy and pay him more than other guys that have been busting their butts for two or three years thats going to cause a problem; if not with the player then with his representatives. Take for example the recruitment of the safety out of Alabama last year who transferred to OSU. The story is it was a done deal for UGA, but OSU came in with a higher NIL offer. Now UGA probably could've met or exceeded that, but how would that affect Malaki Starks or the other guys on the roster that had been busting their butts for UGA. And, yeah they're going to find out how much these guys are getting because everybody talks. This is not just about outbidding another program but it's also about how you manage your roster.
