Digging deeper into Georgia football questions raised by âanonymous SEC coachâ

Kirby Smart, himself, has acknowledged the questions after Gunner Stocktonâs struggle in the 23-10 Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame and inconsistent performance in the G-Day Game.
Comments
UGA may or may not, have the talent, they've had in the past. Although, after years of faulty projections and analysis from the likes of "Anonymous" & the CFB World's Flapping Gums.
Every year produces a new challenge. Last year's challenges, won't be this year's. You can't put UGA in a bubble, for analysis. They aren't the only team dealing with all these NIL/TP- related issues. They just deal with em, as good or better than the rest of CFB.
They will be proportionally, the same as they've ever been, with regard to talent, proficiency, conditioning and competitive focus....IMO.
Also...imo.…Mike Bobo may be questioned and doubted by those that don't know what to expect and have no prior history observing him in action. He went through the usual growing pains of a new Coordinator in the early 2000's, with UGA & Mark Richt. I think those early struggles may have tainted Mike, in the minds of a lot of old Dawg Fans.
I get it. However...THIS is supposed to be Bobo's year.…WITH the quarterback of his choosing. This is the year, Smart turns "the keys to the team", over to Mike Bobo.…cause, the defense is relatively young and raw. And, aren't capable of carrying the team, as in the past.
Luckily....the Defense won't need to carry the day, as it has, so many times before. Smart & Bobo's offense, is more than capable of holding it's own, this year....and a little bit of theirs, Lol.
IMO....With a plethora of playmakers with speed, all over the field.....Gunner Stockton, will run Bobo's fast paced, quick strike offense....and, drop bombs when they have the defense on it's heels.
There WILL be a running game. But, it might not look like you think. I've got a few ideas, but, i don't want to overreach, in my opinions. Lol
Bobo…imo....has NEVER had a problem moving the football. His Achilles Heel has been between the 10 yd line and the goal line. Until he did a red-zone apprenticeship under Todd Monkin, that is. Lol.
I think Bobo spent the last couple of years, incorporating the parts of Munkin's game, he liked....into the game he had already developed [mostly under Goff and Richt]. Not to mention....grooming Stockton to run "his offense...his way", without having to think about it or question it.
Barring catastrophic injury(s), @ the QB/RB Position....I think Smart, Bobo and the Dawgs are ready. Coiled like a snake in-wait, for the opening kick-off. No problem. Lol
I'm with ya. You can tell we're in the doldrum days of CFB prior to the regular season. While I've really been loving MG's stuff this last year, this actually seems like a rehash of the same exact info and criticism of the past few weeks... and maybe another run at BoBo.
I've never been a fan of "anonymous sources" in any venue. If you don't have the cajones to stand by your words, then keep your yap shut (I mean the source, not the reporter). And you certainly can't expect a direct competitor's coach to have anything to say that shouldn't be taken with at least some grain of salt.
That said, is the "source" wrong? Maybe yes, maybe no. We've got a season forthcoming to prove one way or the other. The only good news out of this article? It's GOT to be great bulletin board material to fire up our Dawgs!
" inconsistent performance in the G-Day Game."…….a scripted pass focused game against the best secondary in college football and Gunner went 50%, 2 TD's 309 yards dividing snaps with Pugs and Ginn to win the game…..we all know why this asshat insist on being anonymous…..he's probably some lesser SEC teams equipment manager…..
I also the statement: …“I don’t think this is the same level of talent we’ve seen in the last three or four years,”……that's like saying the steak you just ate is a whole lot better than the steak you see cooking…..oh the genius!
BigDawg61, I'm with you on the running game…..it's going to be shock and awe…..not just from Nate and McCray but I expect lots of yards from Bowen and Walker….a real competition from guys that would be the feature RB on any other team…
You got it Kudzu…..talking season is only priming the pump with BB material….I suspect that after the Tennessee game, The jig will be up and the Dawgs will have lost the element of surprise we're now dressed in from all of the talking heads.
"hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work".
Love the doubt and downplaying - thinks this will definitely be a more hungry/physical team.
@GtheGreek Gunner missed some open throws and Kirby called him out on his decision-making. Also had passes batted a line — made some nice throws, too. But to this point, "inconsistent" seems fair. He's a great kid, everyone wants him to do well. It's a talent question.
Let’s play the games. Then we just might see why the quotes questioning the talent on a team made up of the top three recruiting classes for the last three years comes from someone so bold as to be called “anonymous.” If you’re not willing to identify yourself, SHUT UP!
@MikeGriffith I agree, but I must admit that I just haven’t yet seen enough of Gunner to have a strong opinion. Like you say, he is a great kid that we all want to do well.
I really hope that the O-line can be a strength for us and in turn help us have a very strong to dominant running game. I think this could help Gunner have and hopefully maintain the confidence he will need to maximize his potential.
As stated above, I just haven’t seen enough to be confident on Gunner’s ceiling, but I have hopes that it might be high enough. I do think he is a hardworking kid and also the type of player that might turn out to be a great leader. In any case, I’m very excited to find out how this all goes with Gunner.
Exactly. This G Day game is a game in which the D doesn’t have to defend the QB run, and it’s just a question of not WILL he throw it but WHERE will he throw it. In an actual game that opposing DC better have a plan for the QB run or Gunner can make them pay.
GO DAWGS!
Lolol....doesn't this feel like "Deja Vu all over again". We've heard the same post-Spring quarterback comments...forever.
The QB almost NEVER has a great Spring Game. Mostly by design. There are other things to evaluate, besides ball handling & paTeams
Usually...if a quarterback "has a great Spring Game"....it's because their defense is limited or nonexistent. Or, the coach wants to provide the offense and QB with a confidence injection....so he sits his best defensive players.
Nick Saban, once pulled Will Anderson and a couple other defensive starters out of their Spring game...so their Heisman winning QB, could have time to throw the ball to a group of inexperienced receivers.
I don't know if Kirby's comments regarding Gunner, should be taken all that seriously.…or, was he being straight with regard to quarterback decision-making?
Hard to tell.…since he made similar comments about Stetson Bennett and every other player, the media & fans wanted to focus on. And, we know how that turned out. Lol
IMO....Georgia's offense will look a lot like Spurrier's "Fun 'n Gun Offense's", of the '90's. That Florida offense was responsible for hanging 50 points on the scoreboard between the hedges...for the first time....ever.
I believe, The Dawgs have all the pieces of that particular puzzle, ready to go. Gunner Stockton....imo....is at least as good as the quarterbacks of those high-scoring Florida teams.
Bad enough DN reporting is constantly a rehash of what some ESPN "expert" has written …. Now an anonymous Coach rehash. Time to get creative.
Texas and ND handled that QB run just fine. Gunner is not a run threat the same way Stetson was. Not sure why so many assume Gunner is going to be this dual threat assassin.
Texas didn’t handle anything, they got beat.
Exactly….tired of the same old, same old pushed by this "reporter". This reporter on here is no expert and "consistently" likes to just stir the pot. Anonymous sources….LOL! Meaning him or some asst. that is from a program that is jealous and hopes that what they say is true. BTW…how did they see the spring game? It was NOT televised. And thought it was not allowed to go scout an opponent. Everyone had a fit when Michigan allegedly did it. So how do they know what the team looked like in a controlled scrimmage.
I have never seen a quarterback for UGA (going back to CMR and KS) ever have a consistent performance in a spring game. Anonymous needs to shut his pie hole. WE ARE THE STANDARD! And they don't like it. Its only words and inconsistent performances from so called "reporters" is just annoying. Playing the controversy card.
Stir that pot….
Will we ever learn to trust KS and getting this team to win and perform. The NFL even knows that this program develops players to be ELITE. They don't just arrive here as an ELITE football player. Shouldn't we trust the staff to do what they seem to do "consistently".
