nah I’m done. I’m sure people are tired of reading our little lover’s quarrel by now. If you haven’t gotten it by now you never will
In other words you don’t know what you are arguing…not surprised. God bless you!
Stockton using his feet will work as long as he feels the pressure and moves away. Pocket presence. It will also work to move the pocket and design QB runs as long as GS can throw on the run and not get hurt running. He is a listed at 215 lb. He should be able to take a few hits. GS 's "game" in HS was playground ball. He is way more used to/comfortable with moving around the pocket, throwing on the run and tucking and running more than CBeck was.
The biggest difference w/GS vs CBeck is that this year D's will have to scheme to stop some QB runs. That alone should make the D more predictable. When CBeck ran the read option he never kept the ball.
GS has always played "hero ball" on every snap in HS. He will need to learn to give up on a play rather than force a bad decision. That includes sliding. He can still be effective picking his running spots when the D clears out.
"We have a bunch of question marks" and "talent is not the question at Georgia" does not seem congruent. Not sure you can have it both ways. UGA has a lot of HIGH SCHOOL talent. That doesn't always translate to SEC production. SMondon is a perfect example. Borderline 5* player that never lived up to the hype. Good CFB player but all that potential and production (40 solo T's/yr) resulted in only a 5th rd pick in the NFL. Overrated.
Your "strongest" part of the D (ILB) has been pretty disappointing so far. RWilson was rated higher than Mondon and has been even less effective than Mondon was. CKS sticks with his older players but it wouldn't surprise me to see JWilliams taking his snaps by the end of the year. I'd say Cole would take some of his snaps also but he will be busy playing the JWalker role. UGA D vs the run has not been anything special statistically for the 2 seasons Allen and Wilson have been playing.
With the loss of talent through the TP and graduation and the failure of some of the UGA talent to develop, UGA is not a lock to beat most SEC teams on the schedule this year. There may be 5-7 CFB teams that are on an even playing field with UGA talent wise this year. UGA cleans up in HS recruiting but take a look at what LSU, TX (#1 HS recruiting) and OR added through the TP this year.
High school talent is not the question. Developing talent is the question. #1 question is how has GS developed. Starts with accuracy and decision making.
Stockton isn’t athletic enough to take any sec defense by surprise with a designed run. I suppose opposing DCs will have to account for it more than with Beck, but its ability to be a weapon is being very overrated by the general fanbase.
Smael got hurt. Kid was great in ‘22. Think he will do well in the pros.
Agree Raylen hasn’t lived up to the hype. Needs to make the leap. CJ Allen has exceeded his expectations but needs to step it up.
I’d be willing to bet a $1 that UGA is top 5 in blue chip ratio.
I look at Stockton as a Tim Tebow type QB. He's not particularly great at any one thing...but, with Urbin Meyer's help...he put it all together to run an offense designed for him. Winning a Heisman & Natty in the process.
Like Tebow....Stockton won't do it alone. He has a plethora of talent around him, a stud defensive unit and arguably, the best Coaching in CFB.
Gunner will be set up for success, this year. So will Bobo. This is the year of the O-Dawg. Lol
A QB doesn't have to be especially fast or athletic to have success with the occasional read option keeper or taking the running room between the DL and dropping LB's when there is no spy. You see it all the time. Keeps drives alive.
Mondon's "great" '22 resulted in less than 4 solo tackles/game. Great LB's get 10-15 tackles/game. 1 INT in 51 games indicates he doesn't really have that nose for the ball that elite LB's have. Good athlete but limited instincts. Those types of guys rarely develop substantially AFTER they get paid.
CJ's '24 stats are almost identical to Mondon's '22 stats. I do expect Allen to have a better statistical career than Mondon. He brings a lot more effort and intensity.
Yup, UGA probably still has a Top 5 BC ration. That's what makes the lack of progress and development so puzzling. 1st rd NFL picks on the DL, LB and S positions w/3 other DL and 1 other LB drafted and ranked #36 against the run. Guys seem to be playing to not get hurt and risk their NFL paydays.
All good points - Gunner definitely is not slow or not athletic, Stetson and Gunner's 40 times both are around 4.6, that's not slow. If it is, Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith were slow.
Besides, too many things go into a QB's ability than just 40 times. Leadership, how quick they can process things, toughness, experience, mobility etc. The same can be said about any player. I love his mobility, leadership and toughness he has shown - he gets better with experience imo.
Some look fast or quick and some don't. Herschel didn't look either sometimes until he got out in the open…his feet were always low to the ground and his size made it look not as fast as he actually was, but he was a 4.3 guy from what I remember. Jerry Rice had what I call "game speed". It all can be deceptive…and there are others.
There were a whole lot of folks that wanted Gunner, but Gunner wanted Georgia - we are lucky to have him. I certainly think he has what it takes to be a good one - so do his coaches and even ole Greg McElroy. Gunner is definitely a baller and a winner in my book. The kind of QB that teammates love and will give 100% for. I love his style and so do his teammates imo.
Way too many doubted Stetson, that pushed him. Maybe it will push Gunner to fu8rter heights also.
"When the going gets tough, the tough get going"….football is not just a physical game.
Gunner’s 40 time is 4.65. I’m curious if it was laser or hand times bc from what I saw he didn’t have that ability to run away from guys like Stetson did. I never said he wasn’t athletic or slow. I said he wasn’t fast enough to be considered a true dual threat and from what I’ve seen in six quarters of football as QB1 have not changed my mind on that. Perhaps with more first team reps and comfort that QB keeper will be more impactful. Outside of 1-2 runs in the SECCG it wasn’t. Sorry.
Gunner originally committed to South Carolina with Muschamp and Bobo as OC. Flipped to UGA after the regime change.
Don’t think anyone is doubting Gunner. Most everyone in these comment sections have already crowned him. I just want to see it.
The Dawg Nation crowd, that's been in the know,...and, don't pay attention to alot of the Finebaum/ESPN noise...have NO doubt, that Gunner Stockton is the Right Man, at the Right Time, for The University of Georgis Bulldogs.
Much respect for Kirby's longterm planning. I don't think it was an accident, that Bobo & Stockton wound up peaking, together after Muschamp & Bobo recruited him to Carolina.…before they were fired. Lol
South Carolina might regret, not playing the long-game, with the Muschamp-Bobo team. Bobo's 'bout to show em what they missed out on.
i don’t pay much attention to the espn/Finebaum either. I can understand they cover a bunch of teams and won’t know them the way I do.
But I can also see with my eyes that once Texas adjusted to Gunner he came back to earth a little. I’ll blame Bobo for whatever he called preparation in the sugar bowl.
As I’ve stated I reserve the right to change my mind as I get more evidence on Gunner. Maybe getting all the first team reps, an improved receiving corps, and retooled OL with a renewed commitment to the running game will fix things.
And LaNorris Sellers has been pretty good at Carolina for Beamer so I’m sure they’re fine for now.
IMO....Gunner was playing "Vanilla Ball" last year.
He was the backup...until all of a sudden...he wasn't. Bobo already had a patchwork offense in place...before installing a relatively green QB.
IMO...Stockton's job in those games, was to "do no harm". Don't lose it. Lol....the offensive line didn't get the memo. I don't think it's wise to use last year's performance to project this year's readiness. That old rule-of-thumb, doesn't apply in CFB anymore...especially, in Athens.
It wasn't part of the Gunner Stockton Development Plan, or the Kirby Smart CFP Strategy....to have him play in any of those games. That was a result of njury to Beck....not to mention all the various injuries that effected the Dawgs performance on both sides of the ball, BEFORE Beck's injury. I'm just sayin'.
re: “vanilla ball” as you put “it,” can be “excused” for the SECCG as he was not “expected” to come in that game. Gunner “tried” to lose that game when he threw that INT. Ultimately it didn’t “matter” as the dawgs found a way to win.
I’m less forgiving of the sugar bowl loss. Mike Bobo had an “extra” week to put together a “game plan” that would better suit Gunner’s “strengths” and then rep them to “death.” For whatever reason, that didn’t “quite” happen. It’s completely inexplicable to me.
Regardless of whatever “injuries” the guys were dealing with, we should’ve won that game. Silly “mistakes” meant we gave the game away. We were very “capable” of winning that game, with or “without” Carson. I’m just sayin’.
Probably everything you said about GS is true. Now, with 3 years in the system, all he needs to do is come out and play at an SEC level. Based on his experience in HS and at UGA he should be very comfortable playing the position. How much does he force the ball and how accurate is his arm are the 2 major questions.
Jerry Rice was not considered overly fast. Yet he played fast (and great). Emmitt Smith was definitely not considered break away fast. Had Emmitt Smith had that extra gear, with his line and great running vision, he would've been the Michael Jordan of the NFL.
I think most informed UGA fans really liked SBIV. They liked his athleticism and moxie. My reservations had more to do with his decision making. Under severe threat from CKS he learned to dial down the reckless confidence. I liked his mobility but wondered about his ability in big games (ie Alabama) to stay away from the killer mistake.
