"It remains to be seen if Thorson will be fully healthy to open the season. Despite the injury, Thorson was still viewed as the top punter in the league."….I expect Drew Miller to handle the punting duties week 1 & 2…..but the Leadership role for Brett has never been larger……The THUNDER From Down Under will lead from the locker room to the side lines until he returns to the field of play…..hopefully, against The Vols….."I pity the poor fool that attempts a punt return and luckily slips past the first defenders"!
I'd add the name Bo walker to that list also, he is going to suprise a lot of people..GoDAWGS!
In the wasteland of July college football talk, thanks Connor, for providing a potentially insightful review of other than the usual candidates for Dawg success in 2025.
Thinking that Zach Branch will be any better for a UGA team with national title aspirations than he was for a USC team that went 7-6 against a very forgiving schedule is wishful. Branch was not only third in receiving yards at LSU last season, but dead last among WRs who had more than 10 catches at 10.7 yards per reception, just a bit more than the 10.2 yards per reception than USC's starting TE, and the TE is basically a nonfactor in Lincoln Riley's WR-centric offense.
What works best in the portal is when you grab someone who was a star at his old school, like Ohio State in getting 2700 yard rusher Quinshon Judkins and Bama in getting first team All-ACC Jahmyr Gibbs. The next best is getting a guy who was a backup only because he was an underclassman in a loaded position group, as with Alabama (again) getting Jameson Williams, who was stuck behind a bunch of future NFL starting WR at Ohio State (Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaxon Smith-Njiba, Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave all went in the first round with 3 of them in the first 11 picks). But getting a starter who wasn't a difference maker for another school hoping that he will be for you (almost) never works, and the rare times that it does is circumstances like a guy held back by his scheme or surrounding talent.
Noah Thomas is far more likely to work out at UGA. He has flaws in his game, sure, but he can legitimately claim that he has been held back by the mess that Jimbo Fisher inflicted on the Texas A&M QB position (and program generally). Even with A&M running an option (I guess?) offense that barely produced 200 passing yards a game, Thomas was able to get 8 TDs and almost 15 yards a catch.
Anyone else get the impression that mitch_earl has shown up under a few different names now?
keeping Erob and JWilliams happy is key for the future IMO. #1 LB and CB, can’t have them transferring out.
knows quite a bit about UGA football for not being a UGA fan
Can someone let Kirby know about Mitch.
Hopefully the northern transfers can handle this Georgia heat . It’s beyond brutal this year .
Oh good. I thought I was just getting old.
No WR UGA gets from the TP is going to set the world on fire. 1) because UGA plays WR by committee and 2) because GS still has a lot to prove. But he should be valuable in the slot. You have to believe , if healthy, he is as elusive as DLovett was for UGA.
Now Branch may set the special teams on fire with his return ability. His freshman season he looked like the best returner (21 y/pr) in the country. The UGA return game has been so underwhelming the last few years that walk on Mehki Mews was the star returner for a season. UGA has had great punting and solid kicking. Now UGA may have great returning. Improvement in the return game is just another box potentially checked as CKS methodically builds his team.
Not sure you can hang USC's 7-6 record their 1st season in the BIG10 on a slot wr /KR/PR.
How UGA let JGibbs get away TWICE is a head scratcher. UGA took KMilton and DEdwards in '20.
with Gibbs the first time around I’m not sure he was high on the board (for whatever reason…clearly they misjudged his football skills). Zach Evans was set to come to UGA and then couldn’t. When he got his offer pulled it was too late to get back in it with Gibbs.
The second time around I think Gibbs was still bitter and chose to go to a different school and picked Bama.
Great post Conner. I, for one, can’t believe Kirby didn’t discuss his portal choices with mitch_earl. What was Kirby thinking?
If I had to guess I'd say your assessment is spot on for both misses on Gibbs. Reminded me of how UGA missed Alvin Kamara (Norcross) twice.
"clearly misjudged his football skills". No truer words were ever spoken. But Gibbs was on the smaller side and UGA was pursuing 5* Milton and 5* Evans. The Evans situation blew up in UGA's face. BTW read today that Evans is "retiring" from the NFL.
