Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:
- Please no inappropriate usernames (remember that there may be youngsters in the room)
- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

Question…

If you could, what would you change about the NIL - or would you just leave it the way it is??
Comments
Put a cap limit on it across the board and a 3 year "stay" clause. In other words, the player is committed to 3 years and can't transfer with an "upfront" payment being made.
For sure put a cap on it. Maybe even a freshman "slot" where freshmen can't make more than seniors or juniors. An entry level maximum so to speak.
First thing is to get over the hump and have collective bargaining.
Then things mentioned can be negotiated and implemented.
cap and stay. 1 transfer only
I'm not sure I know what "leave it the way it is" means. What are the current "rules?" As far as I know, it's anybody's guess exactly what's going on in the NIL world. Assuming it is actually a free for all, is that a bad thing? Frankly, I don't know.
It may also be true that "fixing" it could result in unintended consequences worse than what we have now. Again, I don't know.
There seems to be a complete lack of transparency about NIL, but that may or may not be a bad thing for college football and the individual players whose business may be none of my business.
Go, Dawgs!
the current law, not a rule allows the players to take money from anyone wants to pay them. per
the Supreme court. they can agree to anything they want to.
Thanks, but is there more?
I kinda sorta knew that Supreme Court decision, but my point is we don't know much at all about how it translates into real life deals, money, influence on the football programs, what players are getting, etc.
I'm not saying any individual player's business is any of my business, but it would be instructive and helpful to have aggregate numbers for position groups, teams, conferences, etc.
Without knowing what's going one (at that level) how could we know the answer to the question, or even attempt to answer the question, posed by @Eastmandawg because we can't compare our speculation about improvement to anything but speculation about the current state of things.
Go, Dawgs!
Since when have facts mattered is decision making on the forum? Don't let that stop you lol
Probably could have phrased my question a little better.
But if I could change it & make it work - I would blow the whole mofo up. Let the NFL, develop them and pay (all overhead). Pretty sure there is a reason why they have a minimum age requirement to get drafted - they want the colleges to do it on their dime.
Not against the pay part, just make it a stipend (smaller) and fairer for the other schools that are not flush with cash that are trying to compete. Pretty sure the current way will put some programs out of business.
It's crazy what they are paying some - I mean millions to a say a QB who has not maybe played a CF game yet, or to someone that is not performing.
But don't think any of this is realistic to do so at this point, the cat is out of the bag.
Love the passion and love for the school aspect for it all - thinks we have lost some of that. Quit following pro back in the 90's (strikes), lost intertest.
Some good comments on this thread though for the current CF model - thinks contracts would definitely help out. More control on the transferring stuff right away - and maybe some performance clauses in there, put some teeth into it all. They commit to a school; the school invests and then they take off after the 1st year??…CRAZY!
You gonna do it, treat them all like professionals…feels like they are trying to balance the old model with the new.
"Either you are or you ain't"…"poop "or get off the pot". "More & more" - it feels like the tail is wagging the dog.
I know how much some just love Saban - but as some have probably already read, here are some of his quotes which I agree with for the most part:
"You know, I'm not [surprised] because everybody's raising money to pay players," Saban said of the big-name firings, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach. "So, the people that are giving the money think they have a voice and they're just like a bunch of fans. When they get frustrated and disappointed, they put pressure on the [athletic directors] to take action, and it's the way of the world" (coaches getting fired).
"It's really different," Saban said. "Not in a good way from a developmental standpoint; a good way from a quality-of-life standpoint [for the players]. But we need to find a system that improves the quality of life of players but still focuses on the right stuff -- development, getting an education, all those kinds of [things]."
“It is much more challenging now than it was 5 years ago, or 3 years ago even when I was coaching,” Saban said. “That has an impact on consistency and performance, and that’s we’ve seen seeing more ups and downs this year – which also affects guys getting fired.”
"I'm glad that the players make money. ... But it's how they get the money that creates a lot of distractions."
Nice done, @Eastmandawg!
Go, Dawgs!
NIL salary caps like the NFL, and all NIL deals should be made public. Model it after the NFL, multi-year contracts and all. No buyouts, no leaving early, no transferring just because the coach left or got fired. And only one transfer allowed. No more of these guys transferring every year.
However, the only issue with salary caps is that it will create the Bag Man situation again. Anything you do to limit pay will be addressed through backdoor channels. How does the NFL deal with that?
anti trust exemptions
It seems to me that if, hypothetically, Kirby or Kiffin left for the NFL and brought a few assistant coaches with him (heaven forbid!), that the idea that players couldn't be able to transfer would be unfair, because that situation would not be what they signed on for. Universities are also recruiting based on what the team and university offer, i.e. development as a player and as a person, the team culture and possibly the opportunity to play for a championship, in addition to NIL. If the coaching changes, the development, culture and championship possibilities are always affected.
Yeah, but the players are committing to a school first and foremost. Technically, the school is providing the scholarship, not the coach. Nobody ever says at their announcement that they are committing to Coach Kirby Smart. It's the school. I know the reality is that the players are committing to a coach (or the biggest NIL deal available)… but as far as trying to solve the problem it needs to made clear that the commitment is to the school first and foremost. Just because a coach leaves shouldn't mean you get to bail. Probably need to bring back sitting out one year after a transfer also. I think that would solve a lot of problems.
toothpaste out of the tube on that one. Any rule trying to take this year transfer epidemic will be challenged in court and the court will negate the rule.
Best bet is 50-60 teams breaking off from ncaa, agreeing to a unified set of rules and go from there.
